KILLER HEAT
August 2, 2001
After a Kwame Holman background report on the heat stroke death of a football player, Terence Smith interviews NFL veteran Bob Golic; and Dr. Art Kellerman, chairman of Emergency Medicine at Emory University's School of Medicine.
KWAME HOLMAN: A crowd of fans offered support to a mournful Minnesota Vikings football team returning to the practice field today, the day after their teammate Korey Stringer died from heat stroke. On Monday, the 27-year-old offensive tackle left practice early because of heat exhaustion. The 335-pound pro-bowler trained for two-and-half hours on Tuesday, but then collapsed in the 90-plus-degree heat. Stringer was rushed to a hospital, where his body temperature was recorded at 108 degrees. Despite attempts to cool and resuscitate him, the football star died of major organ failure early yesterday morning. Stringer's teammates spoke at news conference yesterday. CHRIS CARTER: We never thought that he would die. We knew it was critical. We knew the facts. We knew what his body was saying, but we all had faith that this was something he was going to walk out of. But that wasn't the case here.

Aggie great Bob Smith dies at 75 January 6, 2005 Special to The Eagle Smith was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Dallas, and his family moved to Houston when he was in the seventh grade. Smith played football at Houston Lamar High School. In leading the Aggies to a 25-20 victory at SMU, Smith dismantled the Mustangs for 297 rushing yards. During regular-season games, no Aggie has come within 60 yards of matching the mark. As impressive as he was during the 1950 regular season, Smith may have been even better in the Aggies’ 40- 20 victory over Georgia in the Presidential Cup. He set the tone for the game by returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and added an 81-yard scoring run as the Aggies jumped to a 33-0 halftime lead against the nation’s No. 1 defense. After just two seasons in Detroit, Smith left the game for financial reasons. He had a good job in the offseason with an oil-field company in Houston, and the Lions were paying him only about $10,000 per year. In 1980, Smith found a print shop in Dallas and, although he had no previous experience in the industry, went into business for himself. He bought the Kwik Kopy Shop, changed the name to “Downtown Printing and Copy Center,” and continued to be involved in the business until his death.

Historical accuracy must be viewed by taking into account the reactions and opinions of contemporary observers, not the distorted hindsight produced by such actions as retro-ratings of previous seasons using a score book or a record book instead of looking for the team who really was perceived as the best, or applying the standards of the current era to previous eras by, for example, counting bowl results in seasons when bowl games had nothing to do with deciding the national leading team. BLACKSBURG, Va. - Basketball star Bimbo Coles, who played on the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and went on to become the all-time scoring leader in Virginia Tech and Metro Conference history, is one of six new members elected to the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
Joining Coles as 2000 inductees are:
  • Mike Burnop, a record-setting tight end of the early 1970s who still holds the Tech single-season record for pass receptions.
  • Ken Edwards, whose inspired play at fullback during the second half of the 1968 football season sparked the Hokies to a berth in the Liberty Bowl.
  • Ki Luczak, a dynamic linebacker who drew widespread attention with his defensive prowess on football teams from 1949 through 1952.
  • Bobby Smith, who contributed to some big football victories as both a fullback and a punter during the 1940s.
  • Lori McKee Taylor, an All-American runner who helped the women's cross country and track programs make a successful transition to varsity status at Tech.
