TV News Deion Sanders Joins CBS' 'NFL Today' (Thursday, September 27, 2001, 10:00 PM) LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Prime Time" is headed to, uh, Sunday afternoon. Former NFL star Deion Sanders is joining CBS' football pregame show, "The NFL Today," on Sunday (Sept. 30). "I was born to do this," says Sanders, who nicknamed himself "Prime Time" for his big-play ability and flashy lifestyle during his 12-year NFL career. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection also played major league baseball for several teams. Sanders will work as a feature reporter for "The NFL Today," which typically trails FOX's pregame show, "NFL Sunday," in the ratings. Sanders has no previous experience in front of a camera, save for postgame interviews and cameos in such TV shows as "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Moesha." back to all news headlines More Headlines

Deion Sanders flashed his trademark smile as he stepped in front of a wave of cameras, microphones and tape recorders. He spoke at length Tuesday about his second year with the Baltimore Ravens when the questions suddenly turned to the hottest topic in sports: steroids. Someone asked Sanders if he believed that Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro might have accidentally taken steroids. Sanders' grin suddenly vanished. He paused for a moment, then revealed a secret he had kept for nearly a year. Sanders said that shortly before he decided to end his three-year retirement last Aug. 31, he received medical treatment for an ankle he hurt while playing basketball. When he took his Ravens' physical, steroids were detected in his system.

Sanders shines in return to majors for Reds
Associated Press Deion Sanders went 3-for-3 with a home run Tuesday after being recalled from the minor leagues. By The Associated Press
CINCINNATI A thick, jeweled cross swung from the gold chain around Deion Sanders' neck. The fingers of black batting gloves poked from the back left pocket of his pinstriped Cincinnati Reds pants. Mingling religion and baseball, the two-sport athlete returned to the major leagues Tuesday with one thing in mind: showing he belonged. After only two at-bats, he had made his point. Sanders lined a single to center on the first pitch he saw from Los Angeles' Greg Gagne in the first inning. Sanders got a standing ovation and a curtain call in the second inning, when he again hit Gagne's first pitch for a three-run homer. In all, Sanders went 3-for-3 and had a sacrifice bunt that set up the go-ahead run in the Reds' 7-6 victory.

COLUMBUS While Ohio State safety Mike Doss has openly campaigned to play wide receiver, pestering his coaches for some action on offense, the Buckeye who has become a two-way star has left his actions speak louder than words. "He's real quiet; he doesn't say a lot," split end Michael Jenkins said of Chris Gamble, who has produced big plays as a receiver and cornerback for the unbeaten and fourth-ranked Buckeyes. "He just goes out there and performs."

This year, he will serve as a studio analyst joining Jim Nantz, Dan Marino and Boomer Esiason at the desk. Fee Range: $50, 001 - and above
Deion Sanders, a 12-year NFL veteran who is considered by many to be one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time, was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and is the only person in professional sports history to play in both the World Series (1992) and the Super Bowl (1994, 1995). A master punt returner, he holds the NFL record with 18 touchdowns scored on returns - punts (6), kickoffs (3), fumble recoveries (1) and interceptions (8). Deion Sanders finished his career with 22 touchdowns (including playoffs) and 49 interceptions. He is second in NFL history with eight career interception returns for touchdowns, trailing only Hall of Famer Ken Houston, who had nine. Sanders is also the only player in Super Bowl history to have both a pass reception and interception.

It may be a wierd decription, but if you think about it, it does make sence.

For Neon Deion, it's all about the money. This is shocking, just shocking. You had to laugh when you read the comments Sanders made after CBS Sports dropped him this week from its National League Football studio show, "The NFL Today." In contract extension talks, the network declined to meet Sanders' asking price of $2 million a year, according to USA Today. CBS was reported to be offering him $1.3 million a year. If that's the case, Sanders should have taken the offer and been grateful someone was willing to pay him that much for a part-time job.

Is this any way to greet an old defensive back just trying to go back to work? Of course, it is. This is Cleveland, where the fans wear dog-face masks as a sign of allegiance. They had extra reason to go about chest-thumping Sunday. The Browns relegated Deion Sanders' NFL return to a minor sideshow by winning their first opener in 10 years, 20-3 over the Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Cleveland outplayed Baltimore's heralded defense, holding Jamal Lewis, the league's leading rusher last year, to 57 yards and converting two Ravens' turnovers into 10 points.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders described how he attempted suicide last year when his marriage was crumbling, his father was dying and everything seemed to be falling apart. Sanders said he tried to kill himself about a year ago by driving his car off a cliff in Cincinnati, where he was playing baseball for the Reds. ''I attempted suicide, but God had his hands on me,'' Sanders said. ''I ran the car off the cliff, and it was like a 40 . . . 30-foot drop. The car went down and hit and there wasn't a scratch on me or on the car.'' Sanders estimated he was driving ''about 65 or 70 mph'' at the time. He said he turned his life around after the crash and now loves the Lord with all his heart. ''You try to fulfill your time and your needs,'' he said. ''I was just empty. I tried cars, jewelry, clothes, women, money. . . . Everything, nothing could fulfill me.''

    eion Sanders makes me laugh.
Not in derision or amusement, but with a combination of amazement and pure joy. If I may indulge in sentiment, I think watching Deion makes me feel like I'm 10 years old again and watching Tony Dorsett break a long one.
Football meant a lot back then. I laugh because there is no one else on earth today that can make eleven highly tuned professional athletes, genetic supermens in their own right, look like complete fools on the field of battle.
But Deion did this on a regular basis, and still occasionally does today. And he might again.
Recently, Fox SportsNet ran an hour-long special on the life of Deion Sanders.
It didn't have enough highlights for my taste. For those, I suppose I'll have to wait for his retirement and a long-awaited NFL Films production. But the FoxSportsNet program did go into some detail regarding Deion's Christian faith, which has been the subject of a great deal of public conjecture.
