Sanders will practice with the team for the first time Sept. 1, and expects to play in the Ravens' season opener Sept. 12 against the Cleveland Browns. Video Arguably the best athlete in the NFL, CB Deion Sanders is taking his talent to the next level and playing on both sides of the ball. Sanders, 37, played cornerback in his prime, but will be used as a fifth defensive back in Baltimore. "This game is not all that complicated. We're going to try to ingrain him as quickly as we can," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "We have to make sure we know where he's at physically. He's here plenty early enough to have an impact." Sanders has not played since the 2000 season, which he spent with the Washington Redskins. According to a report on NFL.com, the defensive back known more for big talk and end-zone dances is planning to adopt 17-year-old Noel Devine, a highly touted high school running back, who is without parents and in need of a father figure. Both of Devine's parents are deceased, and he's been living with a friend, Robert Harlow, for the last three years. "The principal of my high school told me about him a couple of years ago," the 37-year-old Sanders said. "Said the young man needed guidance. I didn't follow through then, but was back in my hometown for a Jevon Kearse event recently. Three more people told me about Noel and his struggles. I've spent some time with the young man, and he needs direction. He doesn't have parents; they died. God put this young man in my heart. This is not about sports. This is about a kid's life." Devine, while playing at North Fort Myers (Fla.) High, the school from which Sanders graduated in 1985, had a two-game stretch last October in which he averaged 35 yards per carry. (AP) - Deion Sanders flashed his trademark smile as he stepped in front of a wave of cameras, microphones and tape recorders. Advertisement He spoke at length Tuesday about his second year with the Baltimore Ravens when the questions suddenly turned to the hottest topic in sports: steroids. Someone asked Sanders if he believed that Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro might have accidentally taken steroids. Sanders' grin suddenly vanished. He paused for a moment, then revealed a secret he had kept for nearly a year. Sanders said that shortly before he decided to end his three-year retirement last Aug. 31, he received medical treatment for an ankle he hurt while playing basketball. When he took his Ravens' physical, steroids were detected in his system. ``The next thing I know they're testing me weekly. I'm like, what's going on? I had never had a prior,'' he recalled. ``They told me I flunked the steroid test. I was on the random steroid test every week because I took something for my ankle.'' Because the treatment was administered before he rejoined the NFL and confirmed by his doctor, Sanders was not disciplined by the league.
