Sanders announces retirement from NFL
Click here for more on this story Posted: Friday July 27, 2001 7:27 PM Updated: Saturday July 28, 2001 11:13 AM David Leeds/Allsport ASHBURN, Va. (AP) Backed into a corner, the world's flashiest cornerback made a very quiet exit. Deion Sanders retired from the NFL on Friday, striking a deal and cutting his losses rather than report to a Washington Redskins team he had disavowed. The announcement didn't come with any Prime Time flash or sentiment or any glowing words rather just as a one-paragraph announcement in which Redskins head coach Marty Schottenheimer told how events unfolded with Sanders' agent, Eugene Parker. "It was evident from his comments that Deion Sanders did not want to play football," Schottenheimer said. "With that understanding, both parties have reached a mutually beneficial agreement. Deion Sanders will retire as a National Football League player, and a financial agreement has been reached."

Sanders, Deion (1967- )
American professional football and baseball player, one of the few athletes in history to succeed in two professional sports. As a football defensive back and a baseball outfielder, Sanders became known for his flamboyant style and dramatic plays. Deion Luwynn Sanders was born in Fort Myers, Florida, and educated at Florida State University, where he excelled at football, baseball, and track and field. He played in the minor league system of the New York Yankees baseball organization in the summer of 1988 but returned to Florida State that fall to play his senior season of football. The Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) selected Sanders in the first round of the 1989 NFL draft. He continued his professional baseball career as well, and he began playing for the New York Yankees in the 1989 season. In September 1989 he hit a home run for the Yankees and scored a touchdown for the Falcons in the same week. In 1991 Sanders signed with the Atlanta Braves baseball team and began dividing his playing time between the Atlanta football and baseball teams. The Braves traded Sanders to the Cincinnati Reds baseball team in 1994. Sanders also joined the San Francisco 49ers football team in 1994, helping them win the 1995 Super Bowl championship and earning the NFL defensive player of the year award for that season. Sanders was traded from the Reds to the San Francisco Giants baseball team during the 1995 baseball season. In football, he joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1995, helping them win the 1996 Super Bowl.

Where Sanders goes, teams win

"I never wanted to be mediocre at anything. I wanted to be the absolute best," says Deion Sanders on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Deion Sanders is the only player to have appeared in a Super Bowl and World Series. For his first five seasons in the NFL, Deion Sanders played for the Atlanta Falcons, who dressed in black and white. Starting with the Falcons, Sanders has been selected for the Pro Bowl eight times. Those colors fit him well. With Sanders, there are no shades of gray. Strutting into the end zone on a long return, he inspired just as many cheers on Sunday as he did critics on Monday. "Some people will come out to see me do well," he said. "Some people will come out to see me get run over. But love me or hate me, they're going to come out." Sanders is the only man to have played in a Super Bowl and a World Series. While nowhere near as proficient in baseball as he was in football, Sanders was an outstanding base stealer who was a mediocre hitter. Back to the NFL: In 1996 with the Dallas Cowboys he became the first regular starter on offense and defense in 34 years. But make no mistake, with eight Pro Bowl selections as a cornerback, defense is where Sanders earns his big bucks. After intercepting 30 passes in his first six seasons, quarterbacks stopped throwing his way.

When he struts into the end zone on a long return for a touchdown, he inspires just as many cheers on Sunday as he does critics on Monday. There's no in-between. Two-way Deion Sanders was in on 50 percent of the offensive and 80 percent of the defensive plays for the Cowboys in 1996. "Some people will come out to see me do well," he said. "Some people will come out to see me get run over. But love me or hate me, they're going to come out." He is the only man to have played in a Super Bowl and a World Series. With six Pro Bowl selections as a cornerback, defense is where Sanders earns his big bucks. After he picked off 30 passes in his first six seasons, quarterbacks stopped throwing his way. It is often said Sanders dominates half the field with his mere presence. Between his talent and presence, Sanders earned back-to-back Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers and Cowboys.
