    By Jay Posner
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER September 20, 2003 If any Baltimore Ravens player might have been opposed to spending most of this week in San Diego, Wade Richey was an obvious choice. But Richey insisted the other day he was happy to be back in the city where his NFL career almost ended in a hail of missed kicks and boos. But getting away might be the best thing that ever happened to Richey, who struggled through nearly two seasons with the Chargers before he was released Dec. 2. After undergoing surgery on his left knee, Richey signed with Baltimore last month and won a job as the kickoff and long field goal specialist. Last week he kicked a career-long 56-yard field goal against Cleveland. Steve Christie Signed by John Butler, Richey was unable to live up to the legacy of his predecessor, John Carney, a popular player whose release was highly unpopular among Chargers fans. Darren Bennett Asked what he expected tomorrow at Qualcomm Stadium, Richey said he didn't know but was eager to find out.

    Is It The Right Tree?
The buck stepped out of heavy cover 30 minutes before sundown, and he was in the right spot as a lead-in to a perfect shot. I'd picked the tree three weeks ago, put up a ladder stand, and felt certain it was properly positioned. The buck, a heavily antlered 8-point, was watching some does and fawns as they moved into a corn field 150 yards away. The buck stood motionless for several long and immobile minutes, and studied the terrain. This old boy had been around the block a few times and was in no hurry to expose himself. I was glassing the area from several hundred yards through a spotting scope. The scope was cranked up to its maximum magnification, and I had an undisturbed view of the motionless buck. He stood warily, 40 yards upwind of my tree stand, and watched the other deer move into the corn. The light was starting to go when the buck began to move. He was in no rush, and minced along the deer trail that had carried the does and fawns to the corn. The buck stopped, checked his back trail, and stood nose in the air with his ears flicking back and forth, sifting the natural sounds for anything that resembled danger.
