Living life to its utmost
By Hub Arkush, Publisher/Editor
Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999 It is my favorite sports quote of all time, and I am amazed that I haven’t read or heard it anywhere over the torturously long days since Walter Payton died at just after noon on Monday, Nov. 1. Asked immediately following a 27-13 second-round playoff loss to the Washington Redskins if he felt somehow cheated or deprived that the Bears wouldn’t be going to their second straight Super Bowl, the man we knew and loved as "Sweetness" responded, "Tomorrow isn’t promised to anybody." In the end, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at all that it is left to Walter himself to explain to us how the man whom John Madden, Franco Harris and Mike Ditka have all called "the greatest football player of all time" could be taken from us by cancer of the bile ducts at the tender age of 45. How is it possible that the man who holds the NFL’s all-time records for total yards gained (21,803) and rushing yards (16,726), along with six other NFL records — all accomplished while missing just one game over a 13-year career — could be so ravaged by this cancer that it would claim him just six months after it was diagnosed, leaving him more than 65 pounds below his playing weight of 205? "Tomorrow isn’t promised to anybody."

Pro Football Weekly historians remember Walter Payton
By Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll
Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999
Pro Football Weekly historians Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll took time Tuesday to give their thoughts on the career of the great Walter Payton. Jim Campbell says: "To me he was a throwback. He was what I remember pro football running backs being like when I was growing up, as far as the complete package. He could obviously run, but he could also pass, he could catch, he could block and he could probably play defense if he needed to. ... "I remember reading about him being touted as a Heisman candidate before his senior year in college. Almost anybody can be a Heisman candidate, but I thought for somebody coming from Jackson State to be mentioned with the Heisman, this guy has to be something special. And of course when he got to the NFL, he was more than something special. ... "His heart and desire are what separated him from the rest of the pack. He did not have the greatest natural ability, but his will to win was always there. ... "No one can ever question the heart, because there are too many film clips where he appears to be tackled and ends up getting 40 more yards. ...

NFL legend dies

Payton entered the NFL Hall of Fame as the all-time rushing leader
One of American football's most famous former players, Walter Payton, has died from a rare liver illness at the age of 45. Payton, who was the National Football League's all-time leading rusher, was awaiting a liver transplant after announcing in February that he was suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis. Payton played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears and ran for a career record 16,726 yards. He averaged 4.4 yards on 3,838 carries with 110 touchdowns. Payton announced in February he was suffering from a rare liver disease He also caught 492 passes for 4,538 yards and 15 scores. The player nicknamed "Sweetness" for his graceful and elusive moves set the NFL one-game rushing record of 275 yards against Minnesota in 1977. The Bears retired his jersey number, 34. Payton, who entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, rushed for a career-best 1,852 yards in the 1977 season and led the Bears to their only Super Bowl in 1985. He decided to go public about his illness in February after questions were asked about his jaundiced appearance and loss of weight.

Harvey Frommer's Sports Book Review by Harvey Frommer Title: "Never Die Easy: The Autobiography of Walter Payton"
Author: Walter Payton with Don Yaeger
Publisher: Random House
Pages: 264
Price: $24.95 This is one of the saddest and at the same time one of the most uplifting sports books to come around in a long time. Walter Payton and Don Yaeger had planned the standard as-told-to sports autobiography, but it became something much different and very special when the greatest running back in football history was struck down by a rare liver disease. "Never Die Easy" tells the story of a man who died much too soon. The book was changed so that Payton's story could be told through his voice but also 25 others: his wife, children, brother and sister and the people in football who knew him best Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, Franco Harris, Matt Suhey, John Madden and even the legendary Jim Brown, whose career rushing record Payton shattered. The title of the book comes from a saying of Payton's college coach: "Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make the linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's OK to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best."
