Quotes on Payton "I think Walter's legacy will be that of a man with a God-given ability that got the most out of it at every possible chance. He did it with pride, he did it with dignity, he did it with respect for the game." brother Eddie Payton, Jackson State golf coach. "Walter exemplified class, and all of us in sports should honor him by striving to perpetuate his standard of excellence. The tremendous grace and dignity he displayed in his final months reminded us again why 'Sweetness' was the perfect nickname for Walter Payton." NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "He was the best football player I've ever seen, and probably one of the best people I've ever met." Mike Ditka, former Bears coach and current New Orleans coach. "Walter Payton was an inspiration to me by the way he carried himself on the field and off the field." Dallas running back Emmitt Smith, the NFL's career rushing touchdown leader. "Walter was a Chicago icon long before I arrived there. He was a great man off the field, and his on-the-field accomplishments speak for themselves." Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan.

November 25, 2002 Ballots Mailed for Payton, Buchanan, Robinson Awards PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network) - The race for the top player, defensive player, and coach in I-AA college football took a final step on Monday as ballots for the 2002 Walter Payton Award, Buck Buchanan Award, and Eddie Robinson Award were mailed to all voters. The ballots, which were sent to media and I-AA sports information directors selected for the voting process, will be due via fax by Monday, December 2nd. The top three finalists (in terms of votes received) for the Walter Payton Award will be invited to attend the presentation of the Awards, with the winner of that Award not announced until the event. The 16th Annual I-AA College Football Awards will be held Dec. 19th in Chattanooga, TN, on the eve of the NCAA I-AA national championship. Two players have been added to the 16-member Walter Payton Award ballot since the most recent "Payton Watch" revision on October 30th, while the list of 16 Buck Buchanan Award finalists features three new names. Fordham running back Kirwin Watson and Georgia Southern quarterback Chaz Williams have been selected as Payton finalists, while Illinois State linebacker Boomer Grigsby, Northwestern State defensive end Roy Locks, and Alabama A&M defensive end Robert Mathis have been selected as Buchanan finalists. Following are the 32 players and 16 coaches appearing on the 2002 Walter Payton, Buck Buchanan, and Eddie Robinson Award ballots. Additional information on each player, as well as history and facts about each of the I-AA awards, is available at www.sportsnetwork.com.

(Sports Network) A total of 32 players have been chosen by The Sports Network, I-AA college football's most widely recognized information service, as official "Payton Watch" and "Buchanan Battle" members. The "Payton Watch" and "Buchanan Battle" pages, which can be found at The Sports Network's website (www.sportsnetwork.com) keep track of the quest for the 16th Walter Payton Award, presented annually to the top player in I-AA football, and the 8th Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in I-AA. The honors will be presented at the 16th annual I-AA College Football Awards on Thursday, December 19th in Chattanooga, TN, on the eve of the 2002 I-AA National Championship. The Eddie Robinson Award, honoring I-AA's top coach, and the Sports Network Cup, bestowed upon the nation's best I-AA mid-major program, will also be presented on Dec. 19th. Five players who appeared on last year's final Walter Payton Award ballot are among this year's initial pool of 16 Payton candidates. Brown wide receiver Chas Gessner, Eastern Kentucky running back C.J. Hudson, Montana State running back Ryan Johnson, New Hampshire running back Stephan Lewis, and Eastern Illinois quarterback Tony Romo are each returnees to the Payton Watch list. Romo, a two-time finalist for the Payton, finished 10th in voting last season and is the leading vote-getter among returnees. Villanova's Brian Westbrook, the NCAA's all-time all-purpose yards leader and a 3rd round draft pick of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, won the 2001 Walter Payton Award.

Walter Jerry Payton
Facts in Brief
Birth: Columbia, Mississippi on July 25, 1954
Died: 1999
Education: Columbia High School and Jackson State University
In 1975, the Chicago Bears picked him fourth overall in the first round of the NFL draft. The Bears had not had a winning record for eight seasons. In his rookie season as a running back, Payton started seven games and rushed for 679 yards. The next year, he rushed for 1,309 and just missed the rushing title because of an injury late in the season. Chicago finished the season with a 7-7 record. It was the first of ten consecutive 1000 plus yard seasons for Payton.
Finally, in 1985 the Chicago Bears made it to the Super Bowl. They played and defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 46-10. Payton was again named the leagues most valuable player, but did not score a point in the Super Bowl game. Payton regretted that and the Chicago Bears coach, Mike Ditka, apologized for that fact also. During his career Payton played 189 straight games for the Chicago Bears and also ran for 16,726 career rushing yards, which is still a league record.
Payton retired from the NFL in 1987. His number, thirty-four, was retired immediately. Payton was elected to the hall of fame in 1993. When he was elected, Jim Finks, the former general manager of the Chicago Bears, described Payton as a complete football player, better than Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson.

WALTER PAYTON
Football's Sweetest Superstar by Mike Towle Walter Payton was arguable the greatest running back in the history of professional football. A star for the Chicago Bears from 1974 to 1987, Payton rushed for a National Football League career record of 16,726 yards. Known to football fans everywhere as "Sweetness," he helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl victory following the 1985 season and over the years established himself as one of the sports world's most popular and personable role models. Payton was beloved by his teammates, idolized by his fans, and embraced by business partners. He captured the heart of the Windy City with a graciousness complemented by a spirit of humility and a wonderful sense of humor. Millions mourned in early November 1999 when Payton, a youthful 45, succumed to cancer after a nearly year-long battle with various health problems. Even in his dying days, however, Payton maintained his dignity, a spirit of community charity, and a legendary ability to pull of practical jokes that would send friends and family reeling with laughter. Before he passed away, he reportedly also renewed his commitment to his Christian faith. His death on November 1 coincided with the day known as All Saints Day in many Christian quarters. In Walter Payton , dozens of his contemporaries, former teammates, coaches, childhood and college chums, business partners, fans, and friends offer in their own words their favorite memories and anecdotes of this man they loved so much.

Fox Sports ... Almost

I cried. When Walter Payton retired as the leading rusher in NFL history back in 1987, when I was still fresh off my eighth birthday, I just started crying. My favorite player —the man I tried to be like when I was running around in those neighborhood backyards playing two-on-two football with my friends —was gone. Before I wanted to be like Mike, I wanted to be like Walter. Monday, after a fight with bile duct cancer, Payton died at the young age of 45. Because of my young age, my memories of my favorite player aren't many and the ones I do have aren't crystal-clear photographs imprinted in my mind forever. I remember an NFL Films video I had with a segment on JOP (jumping over the pile), a form of a touchdown plunge that Walter pioneered for goal line situations. Here, instead of pounding hard, he took the ball from the quarterback and dove head first at what seemed to be about 10 feet above the pile of linemen and linebackers into the serenity of the waiting end zone. I remember the Chicago Bears on the original Tecmo Bowl for Nintendo and how much you had to respect its running game because a computer representation of number 34 would make you pay if you didn't.

Connie Payton, Walter Payton's wife, presented Dunn with his award at a press conference, and NFL vice president of player and employee development and Hall of Famer Michael Haynes made the announcement. In addition, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue saluted Dunn's honor during his annual Super Bowl news conference. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, named after the legendary Chicago Bears running back who died in 1999, is the only league award that recognizes a player's off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence. Dunn joins an esteemed list of past winners that includes 12 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Recent winners include Will Shields Troy Vincent Jerome Bettis Derrick Brooks of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jim Flanigan formerly of the Chicago Bears. Dunn, who posted his third career 1,000-yard season, participates in community service with the same fervor he employs on the field. Through his "Warrick Dunn Foundation," Dunn has had the opportunity to positively affect thousands of people in his community.

FSN's new daily sports talk show, I, MAX, hosted by Max Kellerman made its successful debut on Mon., May 10. The 30-minute telecast, featuring co-hosts Bill Wolff and Michael Holley, airs at 6:00 PM local. The unique format of the show pairs Kellerman against the world, represented by Holley and a special guest each day. Kellerman takes on the news of the day with his analysis and then gives "the world" a chance to respond. Each topic is judged as if it were a boxing match and tallied throughout the show. New York Giants superstar Michael Strahan served as the special guest representing the world for the premiere episode and roundly defeated Kellerman in their bout. I, MAX is the first FSN program to completely originate from New York City. Max Kellerman Quotes:
"Not only are the Angels not the best team in baseball, they might not even be the second best team in California." (On the Pistons-Nets series): "This series was decided in February when Detroit got Rasheed Wallace."
