NFL Statistics Other Resources Probably the greatest all-around running back in football history, Payton retired with NFL career records for most rushing yards, most passes caught by a running back, and most all-purpose yards. During his 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears, he was also the team's emergency punter, emergency place-kicker, and emergency quarterback. Payton was named to the Division II All-American team at Jackson State in 1974. In four years as a starter, he set a division record by scoring 464 points on 66 touchdowns, five field goals and 53 extra points. Payton was a first-round draft choice of the Bears in 1975. The solid, 5-foot-10, 203-pounder was used sparingly as a rookie, rushing for only 679 yards. In 1976, Payton became a full-time starter and he proceeded to lead the National Football Conference in rushing five years in a row, gaining 1,390 yards in 1976, 1,852 in 1977, 1,395 in 1978, 1,610 in 1978, and 1,460 in 1979. Called "Sweetness" by his teammates because of his disposition, Payton was consensus player of the year in 1977 and The Sporting News National Football Conference player of the year in 1976. He won the Bert Bell Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1985, when the Bears were NFC champions.

"When I see him out there, it gives me goose bumps. Not the speediest, not the quickest, but he was [always] throwing his body at somebody. I think God looked down and said, 'Walter, you're going to play for 13 years, and you're going to miss one game. And they're going to beat you up and knock you down, and you're still going to get up and play," says Chicago Bears' Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers about Walter Payton on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Walter Payton held the NFL's all-time rushing record for almost two decades. He broke Jim Brown's mark in 1984 and when he retired after the 1987 season, he had extended the record to 16,726 yards. Not until 2002, when Emmitt Smith rushed past him, was the man called "Sweetness" knocked down from the top spot in the record book. For Payton, the 16,726 yards not only signified the 9½ miles he ran for in 13 seasons, they also represented durability from a running back who enjoyed the physical contact of ducking his head and plowing into a defender just to get that extra yard. "If I'm going to get hit," Payton said, "why let the guy who's going to hit me get the easiest and best shot? I explode into the guy who's trying to tackle me."

It doesn't have the same ring to it as 755, but football fans might argue 16,726 should be just as significant as baseball's most hallowed career record. Payton carried the ball and ran for more yards than any running back in NFL history. That 16,726 is the number that quantifies "Sweetness." It's the career record for most yards rushing in the National Football League. "If I'm going to get hit," Payton said, "why let the guy who's going to hit me get the easiest and best shot? I explode into the guy who's trying to tackle me." Despite all this punishment, he missed only one game in his Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears. Not bad for a guy who predicted he would last only five years in the league. But he played for 13 seasons. And on Nov. 1, 1999, nearly 12 years after his retirement from football, Payton died of bile duct cancer that was discovered earlier in the year during treatment for a rare liver disease. He was 45. But on the football field, he seemed unstoppable and he knew it. Tacklers had difficulty stopping those hard-pounding legs, those runs in which his knees never looked like they were bending, the changes in direction, the bursts through the lines, the overpowering collisions.

Walter Jerry Payton July 25 November 1 ) was an American football player who held the career record for most yards gained by a running back from until when Emmitt Smith broke his record. Payton played college football at Jackson State University in Mississippi and was drafted in the first round (fourth overall) by the Chicago Bears in . From to he led the National Football Conference in rushing, leading the entire league in with 1,852 yards. Against the Minnesota Vikings on November 20 , Payton rushed for 275 yards on 40 carries while fighting a severe case of influenza . The 275 yards was an NFL single-game record until it was broken by Corey Dillon of the Cincinnati Bengals in . He was the NFL Player of the Year and National Football League Most Valuable Player in , and again in . Payton was a vital member of the Super Bowl champion team, rushing for 1,551 yards. Payton retired from the Chicago Bears after the season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio on July 31 Payton was memorable for his distinctive style on the field. He would often take a "high step" after he had broken to the outside to wait for blocking or throw off a tackler's timing. He could often be seen with his hand on the facemask on a pursuing tackler, a tactic which would draw a penalty today. He was perhaps the most adept player at the "goal line leap" into the endzone. A few times, He leaped straight over a defender who was standing straight up for a touchdown! At the end of every carry, Payton would extend the ball as far forward as possible with his arms. This tactic was considered to be an advantage to his team, perhaps gaining a few precious inches which would add up over the course of a game.

http://www.africanamericans.com/WalterPayton.htm
Walter Payton, NFL Football Player Nicknamed "Sweetness" for the grace and style he brought to the game of football, Walter Payton was selected by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1975 draft. He was the NFL's leading rusher and most valuable player in 1977, surpassed Jim Brown as the NFL's leading rusher of all time 1984 (he ended his career with 16,726 yards), led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 1986 and also leads the league in total yards gained 21,803. Of the 190 games Payton played over 13 seasons as a Bear, he only missed one due to injury. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. After retiring from football in 1987, Payton built a $30 million business empire that included a construction company, a restaurant, brewery, and a professional car racing team. Payton, born July 25, 1954 in Columbia, Mississippi, died of liver cancer on November 1, 1999. A crowd of 20,000 gathered at Soldiers Field in Chicago on November 6 for a memorial service in his honor. Of Payton, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said at the tribute, "On this Soldiers Field and dozens more, he was a football warrior and gladiator in the eyes of many, he was the greatest football player of all time."

Walter Payton Biography Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame football player, was born in Columbia, Mississippi, the son of Peter Payton, a factory worker, and Alyne Payton. Walter, or "Spider Man" as he called himself as a boy, was active in Boy Scouts, the church choir, camping with friends, and playing drums in the band before he finally turned to football his junior year in high school at the all-black Jefferson High School. Already bigger and stronger than most of his teammates, Walter was an instant starter. Halfway through his junior year at Jefferson, the all-white Columbia High School was ordered to integrate, and Payton and several of his teammates transferred there. They were upset, however, when a white coach, Tommy Davis, was hired for the Columbia job instead of their Jefferson coach, Charles Boston. Already socially conscious at the age of sixteen, Payton boycotted spring practice that year to express his dissatisfaction, but, recognizing that the decision would not change, he joined the team for the start of his senior season. Payton led his Columbia team to an 8-2 record that year and was named All State. But with just one year at the school and two years of high school football, he was not heavily recruited. He attended nearby Jackson State University, where he joined a team that featured a number of other future NFL players and Pro Bowlers, including Jerome Barkham, Vernon Perry, Ricky Young, Robert Brazille, and fellow Hall of Famer Jackie Slater. At Jackson State, Payton rushed for 3,563 yards, achieving a 6.1 average per rushing attempt, and became the NCAA's all-time leading rusher with 65 touchdowns. He majored in communications and graduated in 1975.

Our family created the Walter Payton Cancer Fund to bring new exuberance to the quest for a cure for cancer." Walter lived his life and fought his disease with passion, idealism, and determination. His family now urges fans to continue fighting cancer in Walter's honor.
