Namath: A Biography
Mark Kriegel
Viking, 480 pages, $27.95 ROUGHLY HALFWAY THROUGH his new biography of Joe Namath, Mark Kriegel writes, with uncharacteristic formality: "It is difficult to imagine an activity more deleterious to the human knee than professional football." In a book written in a vein of street lingo, one that seems to roll along with the buzzing lifestyle Namath led in his heyday, it is a statement that cuts to the heart of the matter of Namath's career. Like that other great New York icon of his era, Mickey Mantle, Joe Namath had bad knees. Born with enormous gifts as an athletein high school he considered an offer to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals before choosing to join Alabama University's football programNamath was prematurely aged at 23, forever one bad hit from the end of his career. More than the booze, the women, and the sheer glamorous fun of his life, it seems that the salient point about Namath is what he accomplished on those damaged knees. He won Super Bowl III with a New York Jets team representing what many considered an upstart league, the AFL. He broke numerous quarterbacking records of his time, earning himself a place in football's Hall of Fame. And along the way, he changed the game of football.

Kriegel, a former New York Daily News columnist, has meticulously reconstructed Namath's life and accomplishments with a thoroughness that historian David McCullough would admire. (Namath himself gave limited cooperation to the project, a fact that works in Kriegel's favor, as it saves "Namath" from even a whiff of the deadliest of subtitles, "An Authorized Biography.") If Johnny Unitas was the first pro football player your father followed, then Joe Namath was the first your mother noticed. In his time, he spilled drinks on Frank Sinatra and was serenaded by Janis Joplin. As Kriegel relates, Elvis once apologized to Namath for a subpar performance. ("Joe, I wasn't at my best tonight. I've got a cold.") Born of Hungarian ancestry in the tough mill town of Beaver Falls, Pa., Joe Namath was possessed of such sensational, brooding good looks and dazzling grin that, according to a neighbor, "Even the nuns [at St. Mary's High School] were charmed."

After college, Joe Namath signed a professional contract with the New York Jets for what was then a record amount of money. In his first season, 1965, Namath was named the American Football League's (AFL) Rookie of the Year. In 1967 Joe Namath who led the AFL in passing yardage became the first professional quarterback in history to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a single season. He was named the AFL's Most Valuable Player in 1968. Joe Namath is perhaps best known for publicly guaranteeing the New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in the 1969 Super Bowl. Going into the game, the Jets were 19 1/2-point underdogs. The Jets beat the Colts 16-7 to stun the sports world. Not only was Namath selected Most Valuable Player, but this game was considered instrumental in forging the eventual merger of the AFL and the National Football League. During his professional career, Joe Namath appeared in five all-star games and was twice named Most Valuable Player. He received the prized Hickock Belt for Professional Athlete of the Year, the George Halas Award for Most Courageous Athlete and the Dodge Man of the Year Award.

Big 33: The 'Super' streak Big 33: The Honor Roll Big 33: The five best? The Big 33 Football Classic prides itself in compiling the top high school football talent in Pennsylvania and Ohio for its annual game. The list of alumni reads like an NFL Encyclopedia. From Joe Namath, Joe Montana and Dan Marino in the early years of the game to more recent stars such as Ty Law, LaVar Arrington and Ben Roethlisberger. What would the game be without the top of the talent pool? Because of recent NCAA legislation, Big 33 game director Mickey Minnich is finding out this year. The NCAA recently passed legislation that allows universities to pay for summer school for incoming freshmen. Most universities start summer school the third week of June. Any player taking part in an all-star game after enrolling would be in violation of NCAA rules. As such, this year's Big 33 will be played Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium without some of the top players from Pennsylvania and Ohio. Since the original 34-player Pennsylvania team was announced in the winter, head coach Bob Palko said five players have turned down the opportunity to play because their colleges wanted to enroll them in summer school.
