He made the Super Bowl Super
Joe Namath did not create football's Super Bowl . But he did make it into a real game, a showpiece, an honest-to-goodness championship game - and it made a legend out of Namath. The first two NFL Championships (they weren't even called Super Bowls then) were post-season games between the National and American Football League Champions. They weren't very good games, and noone gave the AFL much chance of winning. Most thought it was more of an exhibition game. But the third game , in the year 1969, had Joe Namath as the quarterback of the AFL's New York Jets. "Broadway Joe", always outspoken, not only predicted his team would win - he guaranteed it! Most expected to see this brash young man humiliated, but when Namath and the 19 point underdog Jets actually beat the NFL's Baltimore Colts by a score of 16-7, the AFL suddenly was a challenger. If not the NFL's equal, it was now certainly a worthy opponent, and eventually the two would merge into the present NFL . Namath was chosen MVP of that game. But Joe Namath was much more than a one game wonder. Born in Beaver Falls, PA, on May 31, 1943, he was a star athlete in high school only in his senior year. Six teams wanted to sign him to a baseball contract, but he decided on football and college. He won a scholarship to the

The Jets were given little chance of winning Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts since the AFL Champions had been beaten decisively by the NFL Champions in the first two Super Bowls, and many experts did not think the Jets were as strong as the Kansas City and Oakland teams that lost in Super Bowls I and II. One writer predicted a 55-0 Colts rout and another forecasted a 48-6 Baltimore victory. However, Namath rallied his team and all AFL supporters at a Super Bowl week awards dinner by declaring to a surprised audience, "The Jets will win on Sunday, I guarantee you." Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and the aroused Jets made big defensive plays to stun the Colts 16-7, completing a super season.

More Articles Home Celebrating "Broadway Joe" Namath - Part I by Harvey Frommer Way back in 1964 the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League and the New York Jets of the American Football League engaged in a bidding war over Alabama quarterback Joe Namath. It symbolized the war between the two leagues for star players with ability, who would also be television attractions. At Beaver Falls High School in Pennsylvania, the 6-2, 200 pound Namath had excelled in baseball, basketball and football. He quarterbacked his high school team to a perfect season and the Western Pennsylvania championship. He dazzled the opposition on the baseball field as an outfielder and pitcher, but turned down a $20,000 bonus offered by the Baltimore Orioles of the American League claiming he wanted to concentrate on football. At the University of Alabama, Namath was "all everything." His legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant said of him: "He is the greatest athlete I have ever coached." Joe Willie guided the "Crimson Tide" to Orange Bowl appearances in 1963 and 1964. The following season, as an All-American, he led 'Bama to a perfect Season, the SEC title, and the national championship even though his team was defeated by the University of Texas in the Orange Bowl. In his collegiate career at Alabama, Namath was instrumental in getting his teams to post a 28-3-0 record .

More Articles Home Celebrating "Broadway Joe" Namath - Part II by Harvey Frommer The match-up for Super Bowl III was out of Hollywood central casting. Joe Namath and the 18-point underdog New York Jets of the nine-year-old American Football League versus the Baltimore Colts of the established National Football League. Three days before the big event took place the man they called "Broadway Joe" stood up at an awards banquet in Miami Springs, Florida and said, "We're going to win this game. I guarantee it. I guarantee we will beat the Colts." His statement was looked upon as bold and over the edge by many in the media, and many more in established football circles. But the guy from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania was ready to put his performance where his mouth was. On January 12, 1969 - 31 years ago today - the Colts and Jets lined up at the Orange Bowl in Miami. What had been interpreted as Namath's outrageous comments had placed Super Bowl III center-stage. In attendance for the event were many celebrities including President Richard Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew, astronaut Jim Lovell and comedian Jackie Gleason. New York's confidence grew as the game moved along.

Joe Namath is one of the most well-known and admired professional athletes of our time. Over the years, he has won the respect and admiration of not only football fans, but of many Americans as well. Born on May 31, 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Joe is probably most famous for "guaranteeing" a victory for his professional football team, the New York Jets, in the 1969 Super Bowl and then leading his team to one of the most stunning upsets in National Football League history. A winner at every stage of his career, Namath led his high school team to the Pennsylvania state title, and his college team, the University of Alabama, to the National Championship. Joe Namath is regarded by many as the most important player in the development of the American Football League where he started his professional career with the Jets. His presence gave the AFL instant credibility and helped spearhead the merger of the two leagues in 1966. A charismatic leader, Namath electrified his adopted city of New York, earning him the nickname "Broadway Joe." Namath started 71 consecutive games for the Jets from 1965 through 1969. In 1966 and 1967, he led the league in passing attempts, completions, and yards gained. In 1968, he led the Jets to an 11-3 record and the AFL championship. On January 12, 1969, Joe Namath led his underdog Jets to a 16-9 victory over the much favored Baltimore Colts. After a debilitating knee injury, he fought back to regain his all-pro status in 1972, leading the NFL in yards passing and touchdown passes. He retired from the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 to pursue a career in broadcasting. Joe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, the sport's highest honor.

"I'll remember this day for the rest of my life," Marino said. Then he capped it by throwing what else? a perfect spiral into the audience to his former receiving partner, Mark Clayton. "Go deep, Mark," Marino said as he licked the fingers on his right hand, a trademark of his 17-year career.
