, football player. After leading his University of Alabama team to three bowl games and a national championship, Namath became the first of the highly paid athletes in 1965 when he signed a record-setting financial contract with the New York Jets of the American Football League. He achieved sports stardom when he accurately predicted and led a Jets upset over the Baltimore Colts in 1969's Super Bowl III. He was known for accurate passing and his skill as a quarterback. Repeated knee injuries shortened his career, and he played his last year with the Los Angeles Rams. Namath was called "Broadway Joe" for his glamorous life-style. He was inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1985.

AFL-NFL Statistics Other Resources As quarterback for the University of Alabama, Namath was edged out as consensus All-American in 1964 by John Huarte of Notre Dame, who won the Heisman Trophy that year. The New York Jets of the American Football League drafted both of them. Huarte was with the Jets for only one season. Namath led the team to headlines, respectability, and the AFL's first victory ever in the Super Bowl. The headlines began when he signed with the Jets for a reported $400,000. They continued to come throughout his career, sometimes for his play and sometimes for his off-the-field exploits, which earned him the nickname "Broadway Joe." He was named the AFL's rookie of the year in 1965 after passing for 2,220 yards and 18 touchdowns. Namath led the league in passing yardage with 3,379 in 1966 and a professional record of 4,007 yards in 1967. The Jets won the Eastern Division title in 1968, when Namath was named player of the year. In the AFL championship game, he completed only 19 of 49 passes, but three of them went for touchdowns as the Jets won 27-23 over the Oakland Raiders. The NFL's Green Bay Packers had won the first two Super Bowls with relative ease, and the Baltimore Colts were favored by 18 points over the Jets in Super Bowl III. In a talk three days before the game, Namath brashly "guaranteed" a victory. Then he produced it.

JOE NAMATH Football Player Quarterback Joe Namath played American football from 1965 to 1977, but it was his performance in 1969's Super Bowl III that catapulted him to stardom and cemented his place in sports history. Namath was a star quarterback at the University of Alabama, where he played for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and led the team to a 29-4 record in three seasons. In 1965 he won the Most Valuable Player award after Alabama's loss at the Orange Bowl, and almost immediately signed a contract to play with the New York Jets of the American Football League. At the time the league was overshadowed by the National Football League (they later merged), and Namath's natural charisma and swagger brought more public attention to the AFL. When the Jets made it to the Super Bowl in 1969, it was assumed the NFL's Baltimore Colts (led by Johnny Unitas ) would win the contest with ease. Namath made headlines by proclaiming in public that he could "guarantee" a Jets victory. Namath dominated the game, the Jets beat the Colts in a stunning upset and Namath was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Namath's off-field carousing and flash earned him the nickname "Broadway Joe," and he was one of the first professional football players to become a celebrity outside the realm of sports. He advertised products on television (notably women's pantyhose), guest-starred on TV shows and tried a turn acting in feature films. He was also famous for his flamboyant fashion sense and was often seen on the sidelines wearing a full-length fur coat. He was plagued by chronic knee problems in the later years of his career, but stayed in the league for thirteen years and spent all but one season with New York (in 1977 he played for the Los Angeles Rams).
