The Vikings may have been motivated to trade Moss because of health problems. He missed several games with a pulled hamstring, and has been hobbled by a chronically sore ankle and back. (Getty Images) The impending trade of Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss to the Oakland Raiders is causing a buzz with Vikings fans and, no doubt, with football fans around the country. Some are shocked that the Vikings would trade a player who, statistically, is one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game. Others are not surprised. They say Moss' controversial behavior was a drain on the team and they welcome the trade.
However, Moss has also gained notoriety for his temper and attitude. He has been fined more than $100,000 for behavior on and off the field. The latest was a $10,000 penalty for pretending to moon Green Bay Packer fans in a January playoff game. Moss has also been fined for squirting a referee with a water bottle and cursing out corporate sponsors who sat in his seat on the team bus.

Oct. 2, 2002 Minority coaches; Randy Moss
ProFootballWeekly.com asks personnel expert Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on the hottest topics around the NFL. Cochran: NFL needs to more actively promote hiring of minority coaches
A report issued by attorney Johnnie Cochran Jr. Monday accused the NFL of not doing enough to promote the hiring of minority coaches. Among the remedies suggested by Cochran: Teams that decline to interview a minority for a head-coaching vacancy should forfeit a first-round draft pick. Cochran also suggested that NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue "reward at least one team each year for developing a diverse front office" by giving that team a draft choice. And the idea that you must be a player to coach an NFL team is absurd. What do Vince Lombardi, Bill Belichick, Bill Walsh, Dick Vermeil, Mike Shanahan, Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Jimmy Johnson and George Seifert, among others, have in common other than the fact that they coached in Super Bowls? The fact is, none of them ever played a down in the NFL. In fact, you will find that the percentage of coaches who did not play in the NFL is greater, and more successful, than those who did play in the NFL. Does that mean that the NFL should be pushing teams to hire coaches who did not play in the league? Of course not. The idea of quotas just does not work in football.

Sept. 25, 2002 Not 20 minutes into the workday today, the words that we thought might come down did. "Randy Moss is on the trading block (in my fantasy football league)," one of my colleagues and fellow fantasy owners shouted. Why was this shouted? Because Moss is an idiot. Period. He makes it way too easy for us journalists to tear into him, and I am flat-out sick and tired of him. How boneheaded a person does Moss have to be to drive along in his luxury car, try to make an illegal turn and decide to push a traffic agent with the car? Apparently, the agent was trying to stop Moss from making the illegal turn.

Since Minnesota Vikings receiver Randy Moss made the touchdown gesture at Lambeau Field and took attention away from his teams victory over its bitter division rivals, and since his indifferent performance Sunday against Philadelphia, people in Minnesota are wondering aloud whether Moss is going to be traded. CBS Phil Simms was asked Tuesday by a Minneapolis reporter if he thought it was time for the Vikings to move Moss along. My instinct would tell me right now that would be a pretty good thought, Simms said during a conference call to preview the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. I have no inside nothing. It might happen. If they find someone to take him and the deal is somewhat right. I think the distractions are now starting to outweigh what comes on the other end. It takes away from the team. So much focus on it, its just incredible. Simms said Moss teammates must have become weary having to answer questions about Moss.

I want to say that I agree with the analysis that was given in the article "Welcome to the Big Time" [February 2003] regarding Randy Moss and his lack of leadership on the Minnesota Vikings offense. Randy Moss has more God-given talent than any receiver in the NFL It is true that he was named to the Pro Bowl last season, but he is lacking two elements that he will probably never have: heart and respect for the game of football. Mr. Moss plays when he wants to play and will not give 100% on every play. His antics off and on the field are sure signs that he is not respecting the game. If Randy played with as much heart and had the same respect for the game of football that, say, Donald Driver of the Green Bay Packers has, he would be untouchable.

It looks as if the answer to the question you asked on your October 2002 cover about Randy Moss"Leader or loser?"is being answered. He is a loser. Yes, he's a gifted athlete, but he isn't the type of player who makes his teammates better the way some of the great receivers have. And he doesn't seem to fare well under the type of adversity the Vikings have faced the past two seasons. Albert Harrison Richmond, Va.
