Columnists Smizik: Veteran receiver is missing ingredient Tuesday, June 11, 2002 On the first day of minicamp, which is something like the third phase of the Steelers' off-season program, Coach Bill Cowher stood outside the team's training facility and talked about the intangibles that go into making a championship football team. "There has been a really good focus on the field, and they're getting something done," he said. "They're developing that rapport and camaraderie that I think is so important." It's never been proven whether winning is the result of chemistry or if chemistry is the result of winning. It doesn't matter with the Steelers. They are proven winners with chemistry. This is a seriously talented and supremely confident team. It knows what it takes to win and knows what must be done to get at least one step further than last season. Toward that end, wide receiver Herman Moore, who is a free agent after an outstanding career with the Detroit Lions, was a subject for discussion by Cowher and the players. The Steelers will meet with Moore and Terrance Mathis, 35, another wide receiver with exceptional credentials, with an eye toward signing one of them as the team's No. 3 receiver. | |
