Which College is Quarterback U?
By Adam Russell Also see: "Addressing the QB-U Controversy." Some college football teams have nicknames that are unmistakably unique. But I'm not talking about Wolverines, Nittany Lions, or Cornhuskers. I mean names like "Tailback U," "Linebacker U," or "Receiver U." Any serious college football fan knows them also, as USC, Penn State, and Miami. But have you ever heard anyone refer to a school as "Quarterback U?" I can't recall ever hearing a school given that moniker — maybe for a short period, but not as an absolute. I began wondering about that after I learned last year that another quarterback from my alma mater had made an active roster in the NFL. Jason Gesser making the cut with the Tennessee Titans seemed to me like about the 10th Washington State QB to make the NFL in about 15 years. I had to find out what the numbers were. So, in my curiosity, I started to look at the NFL draft and teams' all-time rosters to see just who had made the pros, or at least almost made the pros, from Wazzu. Then I started to wonder where they stood among all the other schools, and the project was underway. I decided to limit the scope of my study to 1960 to the present. The reason for this is because quarterbacks became more of a premium with the creation of the American Football League in that year. The AFL relied more on downfield passing than its run-oriented NFL cousin. That's not to say that there weren't a bunch of talented passers in the NFL prior to 1960, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

a.k.a. Frank Costanza's Festivus Airing of the Grievances By Pete Fiutak What's your beef? ... E-mail with your thoughts If this column sucks, it’s not my fault … unlike new Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, I didn't get gastric bypass surgery and am still too unattractive to write a successful column.
There's no truth to the rumor ... that Jeff Tedford, Kirk Ferentz, Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan and Steve Mariucci have already gone through their people to say they aren't interested in the open Notre Dame job in 2007. But it would be interesting to see what Chandra Johnson would shave next ... Get ready and start digging your bunkers for the firestorm that will hit three years from now if/when Notre Dame doesn't go to a BCS game and Weis, unlike Ty Willingham, isn't let go. This isn't going to be easy for Weis and it won't necessarily be his fault. The players in place are mediocre, the schedule next year is brutal, the academic restrictions are still as tight as a drum and Weis is already behind in recruiting. However, he gets three years. Anything more without better results than Willingham got will open up an industrial sized can of worms.

A sense of values Matt Hasselbeck: Some say the Seahawks' new quarterback is a born leader, others say he's a rare athlete - flying high with both feet on the ground July 29, 2001 Mike Sando; The News Tribune Matt Hasselbeck brought back more than hepatitis A from his improbable sojourn to the harshest slums of the Caribbean. Five years have passed since Hasselbeck awoke in a hospital bed in Massachusetts, unsure exactly how he got there. And while the Seattle Seahawks' new quarterback has recovered from the illness that robbed his angular frame of 27 precious pounds, he remains deeply affected by what he encountered in Jamaica as a missionary from Boston College. "It was a life-changing experience," Hasselbeck said. Riverton City is a wretched place by any measure, having arisen atop a landfill that absorbs more than half of Jamaica's garbage - some 1,300 tons daily. Shanties with tin roofs provide little refuge from the stench. Violence is part of daily life, and daily death. For Hasselbeck, the most powerful memories of his time there remain disturbing enough to preclude casual discussion.

Mirer enjoys life outside of the spotlight
By Sean Jensen
Packer Plus writer September 09, 1998 Green Bay For once, Rick Mirer doesn't have the weight of an entire team resting on his shoulders. For once, he doesn't have to learn an entire system, execute the plays and deliver immediate results. He's no longer THE MAN. In fact, after signing a four-year, $8.55 million contract with the Green Bay Packers last week, Mirer became the man behind the man (Doug Pederson) who relieves Superman (Brett Favre). "It's a little different, but nice in a way to not be the guy that the focus is on," Mirer said. "I really had the spotlight on me for 10 years. My senior year in high school, four years at Notre Dame and five years in the NFL. This is something I needed at some point. It never happened early, but it's a chance now to catch my breath and see how successful people do things." Since Seattle selected him with the second pick in the 1993 draft, Mirer has been called upon to resurrect floundering teams. He spent four tenuous years with the Seahawks before being traded along with a fourth-round draft pick to Chicago in February 1997 for a first-round selection (11th overall). With family and friends watching closely last year in his hometown of Goshen, Ind., about 21/2 hours from Chicago, Mirer struggled through his worst season as a pro, throwing six interceptions and nary a touchdown in seven games, three as a starter.

Fantasy Football: Top QB should remain a priority
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus July 17, 1996 No matter what point system your league follows, top quarterbacks should remain a high priority come draft day. Outside of a handful of running backs and receivers, your quarterbacks will be near the top of your scoring leaders. 1996 looks to be the strongest year in recent memory for fantasy quarterbacks. More teams are throwing on more downs than ever before. Only the Eagles, Cowboys and Colts ran fewer pass plays than running plays in 1995. If you include sacks as passing attempts, and NFL statisticians do, all 30 teams passed more than they ran for the first time in the history of the league. The leader of the air assault is definitely the NFC. The top five passing teams ranked only by touchdowns all belong in the once grounded NFC. Four of those teams Green Bay, Detroit, Chicago, and Minnesota all belong to the NFC Central. When choosing your quarterback this season, keep three things in mind:
  • 1. What is the quarterback's comfort in the style of offense? It usually takes a year in a new system to be able to run it well. Last year we watched as Randall Cunningham died in the West Coast offense that Philly was learning. Rodney Peete ran a limited version of it and won games. John Elway is in a similar situation. Both should do much better in 1996.

Not every player at every skill position will be listed every week. Instead of a watered-down version of predicting each player's performance, this list will focus on a select group of players whose chances to succeed or fail are increased based on their opponent of the week. When using this list, try and remember a couple basic rules: 1) Studs - Always play your studs. You won't find Marshall Faulk or Randy Moss on this list. This list is to help choose between the middle-of-the-road players. 2) Depth - Every fantasy team is different and some have more depth than others. Only follow the recommended moves if your team depth allows you to make such a move. Enough of the chit-chat, onto the list!! The BYE weeks are finally over. No more excuses! Since I have three teams still smack dab in the playoff hunt, I'm searching for as much good karma as humanly possible. To assist in this matter, I'm writing each player's comments in the form of a haiku. For you English majors out there, my sincerest apologies.

This clipping, I'm told, came from somewhere out in AOL-land. I haven't read the entire article, and I haven't been able to locate the source from which it was taken, which means I can't verify its accuracy and I can't determine if it was taken out of context. Scouting report: Patriots vs. Seahawks
October 15, 2004 Sports fans across New England will take a break from the Red Sox-Yankees series Sunday afternoon when the Patriots get set to host the Seattle Seahawks. This matchup will provide the Pats their biggest test since Week 1, when they hosted Indianapolis. ADVERTISEMENT It is the marquee matchup of Week 6, as Fox is sending its pregame crew to broadcast live from Foxborough. The quartet of James Brown, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson and Terry Bradshaw is considered to the No. 1 pregame show. ESPN might have been able to make that claim once upon a time, but then the good folks at Bristol decided to hire Rush Limbaugh, and well, you know the rest. Fox is also sending its No. 1 broadcast team to handle the announcing duties (see below). Many preseason prognosticators believe these two teams will meet again in Super Bowl XXXIX. Both teams had been doing their level best to live up to those lofty expectations, getting off to 3-0 starts heading into last week's action. Seattle seemed poised to move to 4-0 last Sunday as it led the St. Louis Rams, 27-10, late in the fourth quarter. But the Rams rallied for 17 points in the final five minutes to send the game into overtime, and handed the Seahawks their first loss of the year, 33-27. All the Pats did was manhandle the Dolphins, 24-10, to improve to 4-0 on the year and run their winning streak to 19. Read on for a look at our position-by-position breakdown of this week's matchup.
