A BRIEF HISTORY T he Marshall University "M" Club, made up of former Thundering Herd athletes, team managers, student trainers and cheerleaders who participated in varsity or junior varsity athletics at MU, is almost as old of an idea as athletic competition for the old Green and White. While the first documented athletic contests took place in baseball and in football in 1898, the letter "M" award began being handed out by the then year-old Marshall Athletic Association in 1905. While thousands of participants have earned letter awards throughout the years, there was very little organization in or out of the athletic department to keep track of who, when or where letter awards were given . There was even less of a feeling of actually belonging to something connected with Marshall University for former participants in athletics at MU. No one had tried to put together any sort of list of these people in nearly a half-century until the MU Athletic Hall of Fame was being formed in 1984. The task of trying to organize and contact all the living participants got energized when Bobby Pruett returned as the Head Coach of the Thundering Herd Football program in January of 1996. As a former three-sport letter winner for the Herd, Pruett thought an organization committed to bringing these people back into the fold was necessary to continue building a successful athletic program in all areas, not just football. Honoring those who had paved the way for current Marshall athletes, building a fan, financial and recruiting base and giving those ex-players, managers, trainers and cheerleaders a place to get together for Herd games was the basis for a new club in Huntington.

Wireless Jim Grobe Position: Head Coach Years at Wake Forest: Entering 5th Year (22-25) Entering his fifth season as head coach, Jim Grobe has established Wake Forest as one of the rising programs, not just in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but on a regional and national basis. Grobe is fond of the saying, "when people used to see Wake Forest on the schedule, they used a pen to mark down a `W.' We're at the point now where we at least make them use a pencil." That is a vast understatement of the program's progress that, in four short years, has seen Wake Forest develop into a team that competes with every opponent every week. The levels of excitement and expectation surrounding Demon Deacon football have reached unprecedented heights. That is a tribute to Grobe and his staff. In the past four years, Wake Forest has defeated seven of nine ACC pre-expansion rivals, plus opponents from the Big Ten (Purdue), Pac-10 (Oregon) and Big East (Boston College). During that same time period against in-state rivals, NC State is 10-3, North Carolina is 9-5, Duke is 2-9 and East Carolina is 0-8.

I know that Southern Cal looked awfully good in beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl January 4th for the BCS title and a national championship. But for me and a growing multitude of college football fans, BCS does not stand for Bowl Championship Series - it stands for Bowls Can't Satisfy. Would it be the end of the world if Auburn and USC played one more game to see who the best team in the nation is? I bet Utah would vote for the game. The unbeaten Utes even have an arguable point that they deserve a crack at Auburn and the winner of that game gets the Trojans for the championship. The sad thing about all of this is that the same record keeps spinning. No, I guess the record is broken. And a fix is not in the foreseeable future.

Mark Snyder Named Marshall's 28th Football Coach
Marshall coach Mark Snyder By Woody Woodrum, Sr. Editor Photos by Greg Perry, Herd Insider
Date: Apr 14, 2005
Marshall University Interim President Michael Farrell and Thundering Herd Director of Athletics Bob Marcum –both Marshall alumni– took great pride in announcing another alumnus, former Herd safety Mark Snyder, has accepted the head football coaching job at Marshall. A press conference to introduce Snyder was held Thursday morning in the Big Green Room at Joan C. Edwards Stadium to welcome the 28th coach in Marshall history. Snyder also became just the sixth MU alum to head up the program...
In his playing days, Mark Snyder was an All-Southern Conference safety who was named honorable mention All-American by Don Hansen's Football Magazine. He was also on the 1987 Herd team that shocked Louisville at Cardinal Stadium, then made it to the I-AA National Championship game in Pocatello, Idaho. Marshall fell 43-42 to Northeast Louisiana in that game, but Snyder had a record setting season with 10 interceptions, still a MU and Southern Conference record.

John Hartson scored a first-half hat-trick comprising two headers and a penalty kick. Brian Kerr had briefly cancelled out Hartson's first with a fierce drive, but the second half was Motherwell's. They went 4-3 up through headers from Jim Hamilton, Scott McDonald and then Willie Kinniburgh but sub Beattie prodded in the equaliser. The game started in torrid fashion, with a series of thunderous challenges and Celtic's young centre half Stephen McManus lucky not to be booked for two of those. Scott McDonald, the man who cost Celtic the league last season, threatened them again after 12 minutes when he broke free of Stan Varga, but he dragged his shot wide. But it was Celtic who took the lead shortly afterwards.
