Dan Marino has become such an icon in South Florida thanks in large part to his accomplishments on the football field that it's easy to overlook some of the personal history that has helped shape him into the man that he is. Marino, with his numerous NFL records and all its fame and fortune, might seem larger-than-life, but his essence as a human being was shaped in a past that was not much different than what countless other Americans have experienced.
Daniel Constantine Marino, Jr. was born on Sept. 15, 1961, in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Daniel and Veronica Marino. Dan was the Marinos' first child, with two daughters to follow. The family lived in a section of Pittsburgh called Oakland, which was an ethnically diverse working-class neighborhood of steel workers, truck drivers and laborers. Dan Sr. worked a variety of jobs to support his family; his primary job was delivering newspaper bundles on the midnight shift for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The family never had much money, but it always had enough to pay the bills and put food on the table.
During Marino's youth, the Steelers began to emerge as a powerhouse in the NFL, and young Dan soon became one of their biggest fans. In an era before Nintendo and MTV, Marino and many of his neighborhood pals entertained themselves by playing pickup football games. Football was in their blood, and throwing a football seemed as natural to Marino as walking or breathing. Even though he was younger than most of the other kids, Marino always played quarterback, and he always played to win. When there weren't any kids to play with, Marino still wanted to throw the ball around. He'd go on the street and throw at telephone poles while moving around the parked cars like he was dodging on-rushing defenders.

marino, dan (1961 ). American professional football player, a quarterback who in 1995 set National football League (NFL) career records in passing
http://library.thinkquest.org/12590/marinoda.htm
Marino, Dan (1961- )
Born Daniel Constantine Marino, Jr., in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he played football and baseball in high school and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. During his notable college football career, he led his team to four bowl games (postseason games held in December and January to which the best college football teams are invited each year) in four years: the Fiesta Bowl in December 1979, the Gator Bowl in December 1980, the Sugar Bowl in January 1982, and the Cotton Bowl in January 1983. He was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft. Early in the 1983 season, Marino became the starting quarterback for the Dolphins, a surprising accomplishment for a rookie. He led the Dolphins to the American Football Conference (AFC) Eastern Division title that year and was named the NFL's rookie of the year and a starting quarterback in the Pro Bowl, the annual postseason all-star game held by the NFL. In 1984 Marino became the first quarterback to pass for more than 5000 yards in a single season, and he broke the single-season record for touchdown passes. He was voted NFL player of the year, and in the postseason he led the Dolphins to the 1985 Super Bowl , which they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. In subsequent years Marino became famous for his throwing power and accuracy, quarterbacking the Dolphins to numerous playoff appearances.

None has a more special place of honor than the stack of 1960s Pirates baseball cards, nor the Bill Mazeroski bobblehead doll, nor the stamp of Willie Stargell, nor the football card of former Pitt quarterback John Congemi. Not far from the Johnny Unitas autographed trading card is an old IC Light beer bottle, part of the label replaced with a likeness of Dan Marino Sr., naked from the waist up, created by Dan Jr. in honor of his dad's 60th birthday. You can take the boy out of Pittsburgh and drop him into the tropical paradise of an 11,500-square foot Mediterranean dream home behind two security gates in this exclusive Fort Lauderdale suburb, but you can't take the Iron City out of him.

Little known stories about Dan Marino ... until now
Friday, August 05, 2005 By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Have you heard the one ...? Many stories will be told about Dan Marino in Canton this weekend. Others will be told only here: While Steve Young is the first left-handed quarterback entering the Hall of Fame, Dan Marino is not the first to wear the No. 13 (He first wore that number, by the way, in Little League baseball. His dad was the coach, and he made Danny pick his uniform last among the players, which is how he wound up with the supposedly unlucky number). Five others who wore No. 13 preceded Marino into the Hall: Guy Chamberlin, Pete Henry, Don Maynard, Joe Stydahar and George Trafton. Marino will be the 26th Pennsylvania native inducted at Canton. No state can claim more Pro Football Hall of Famers. Texas ranks second with 24 and Ohio third with 21. Marino is the fourth from Pitt, joining Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett and Joe Schmidt. Dan Marino did not start his first game in the NFL in 1983 because the Dolphins went with incumbent starter David Woodley, their starting quarterback in the Super Bowl the previous January. But it was evident that spring at the Dolphins' minicamp that Marino's skills were far superior to Woodley's.

"I'll remember this day for the rest of my life," Marino said. Then he capped it by throwing what else? a perfect spiral into the audience to his former receiving partner, Mark Clayton. "Go deep, Mark," Marino said as he licked the fingers on his right hand, a trademark of his 17-year career.
