2003 Washington Redskins Tickets
In professional football’s early days, Washington was one of the game’s most powerful clubs, capturing two league crowns and posting ten consecutive winning records from 1936 to 1945. Leading the Redskins’ high-scoring offense were two-time rushing champion Cliff Battles and six-time passing champion Sammy Baugh—both eventual Hall of Fame members. Click here to find Washington Redskins tickets The Redskins consistently fielded potent teams from 1971 to 1992, reaching the playoffs 13 times, competing in five Super Bowls, and winning three of them during that period. Washington’s many stars included safety Ken Houston, quarterbacks Sonny Jurgensen and Joe Theismann, wide receivers Art Monk and Charley Taylor, and running back John Riggins. Related Links

  • George Preston Marshall founded the Redskins franchise in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, as the Boston Braves, sharing Braves Field with the Boston Braves baseball team. A year later, Marshall moved his team to Fenway Park and changed the team’s name to the Redskins. The Redskins were not profitable, and even an Eastern Division championship in 1936 failed to excite Boston fans, so in 1937 Marshall moved the club to Washington, D.C. The team found success in its new home. From 1936 to 1942 head coach Ray Flaherty led the Redskins to seven consecutive winning records and three appearances in the NFL Championship Game. Washington faced the Chicago Bears in all three contests, posting narrow victories in 1937 and 1942 and suffering a 73-0 defeat in 1940. During the 1937 title match Flaherty introduced the screen pass. In such a pass, the offensive linemen run downfield in front of the running back instead of blocking for the quarterback. The quarterback then throws a short pass to the running back and the linemen form a screen, blocking downfield to gain yardage. This strategy has since become a standard offensive play.

The NFL's Dirty Little Secret A majority of early NFL owners were known gamblers. Some were even tied to organized crime. One time Dallas Cowboy owner Clint Murchison Jr., Kansas City Chief owner Lamar Hunt (son of oilman H.L. Hunt Jr.), Cleveland Brown/Baltimore Raven owner Art Modell, New Orleans Saints owner John Mecom Jr. (who had very close ties to Mafia boss Carlos Marcello, a key player in bringing a team in New Orleans), Chicago/St. Louis/Arizona Cardinal owner Charles Bidwell (who was a bootlegger and an associate of Al Capone), and Philadelphia Eagle owner DeBenneville "Bert" Bell (who had ties to the East Coast Mafia) all were known to have been gamblers and bet on football (some even their own teams). Carroll Rosenbloom, one time owner of the Baltimore Colts, not only bet on his team, but also altered the outcome of a game because of it. Oddly enough, it was this very game that legitimized football for the television networks. It has been called the greatest game ever played: the 1958 NFL championship game. Rosenbloom’s Colts were playing the New York Giants, who were 3 ½ to 5 ½ point underdogs. Rosenbloom laid down $1 million on his boys to win.

    Mitch Chortkoff
    Mirror sports writer
When Santa Monica College begins its football season Saturday at Southwestern in San Diego, it will arrive as defending champions of the Western State Conference Southern Division.
“It’s a good feeling coming off a championship,” said Coach Robert Taylor. “We intend to defend it the right way.”
Winning again will be a challenge because 21 sophomores from the team went on to four-year colleges and this group is dominated by freshmen.
“We have talent but it’s untested,” said Taylor.
There are exceptions, however. Two running backs, described as Division 1 caliber, return. So do some outstanding receivers. But there will be a new quarterback, since last year’s starter David Koral is now at UCLA.

    PUBLIC FIGURES
    October 1995
Former Washington Redskin Dexter Manley was sentenced to four years in prison in Texas after pleading guilty to two counts of cocaine possession (David Aldridge, "Manley: 4-Year Sentence," Washington Post , August 5, 1995, p. C1). Manley, 37, was originally charged with four incidents, but two charges were dropped when Manley pled guilty. As was reported in the March issue of NewsBriefs Manley was arrested and charged on Feb. 16 with possession of a controlled substance . Police had been called to Manley's motel room after he threatened to commit suicide. He agreed to be admitted on an involuntary basis at the Sam Houston Spring Branch Hospital for at least 90 days. He remained there for four months, but later was arrested after a traffic stop in Houston. In that incident, he fled from police and tried to escape down the highway on foot. Manley pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance in incidents on Nov. 13 of last year and July 26 of this year. Manley was a defensive end with the Redskins for two Super Bowl victories in 1983 and 1988. On December 21, 1991 he retired from the National Football League after he was banned for having failed drug tests on four occasions. He played in the Canadian football league for a season in 1993.

Camp Old School: Driven to Distractions
Manley was a distraction to QB's as well as Gibbs By Rich Tandler Editor-in-Chief
    Date: Jul 28, 2005
When recalling the first Gibbs years, there is a tendency to look at all of the success and think that everything was smooth sailing. Of course, that was not the case; one of the strengths of those teams was an ability to overcome adversity and turmoil. They faced their share of that, particularly during training camp. Here’s a not-so-fond look back at some of the preseason distractions and controversies from Gibbs Era I.
    Holdouts
Prior to the advent of free agency, the only recourse a veteran player who was not satisfied with his team’s contract offer had was to sit out of training camp while a new deal was being negotiated. One of the byproducts of the success the team enjoyed during Gibbs’ first tenure here was that players were often seeking hefty pay increases, leading to a lot of missed two-a-days. Among the more contentious holdouts was that of Mark Rypien in 1991. The team seemed to be primed for a Super Bowl run, but the quarterback position was one of the few question marks. Rypien had yet to hold down the starting job for an entire season yet he was demanding starting quarterback money. The team wasn’t willing to commit major money over a long term for an unproven commodity. After holding out for the first week of camp, Rypien gambled and signed a one-year deal worth $1.4 million. His roll of the dice paid off as he passed for over 3,500 yards and was named the Super Bowl MVP.
