No Ordinary Joe
The Washington Redskins go back to the future.
By David Hickey ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA
Redskin haters take a perverse pleasure in watching the Redskins fail, especially when expectations for the team are high. For the past decade or so, the pleasure has been intense . The team has made only one playoff appearance in the last eleven years. This past season just ended in a five-win debacle, with false messiah Steve Spurrier leaving town in disgrace. Over the years, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching hundreds of millions of dollars being wasted on over-the-hill free agents (Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, etc.), on high draft picks turning into high-priced busts (Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, etc.), or seeing underachieving players leaving the Redskins to become bona fide stars on other teams (Super Bowl quarterbacks Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon, etc.), and four utterly confused head coaches in the last four years (Norv Turner, Terry Robiskie, etc.). But in what has to be the most stunning news in the sports world since Michael Jordan announced his first retirement, the Boy Blunder showed former Redskin coaching great Joe Gibbs the money and lured him out of an eleven-year retirement with a five-year, $25 million contract. The last time someone so famous came back to our nation's capital to resume such a prominent position of leadership was when Grover Cleveland returned to the White House after a four-year absence in the late 19th century. Even the most steadfast Redskin hater, if he is a true football fan, has to be impressed with the rehiring of the legendary Coach Gibbs.

I once heard that the definition of creativity is the ability to make a connection among incongruous items. You’ll never know what combination of concepts will occur to you and produce a sudden insight. Why, Warhammer 40,000 itself is based on such a combination, taking elements of traditional fantasy literature (elves, orcs, demons) and mixing them with elements of traditional science fiction (space travel, laser weapons, aliens). I can only imagine what Tolkien would say about Codex: Eldar…. “Hail to the…Tau?”
Besides 40K, my other consuming passion is professional football, specifically the National Football League and the Washington Redskins. Like 3rd Edition 40K, football is a “game of inches,” won mostly on the ground by maneuvering, strength, and sheer aggression. It too is fierce, competitive, and allows no room for complacency: each team strives to constantly improve so that it can defeat all comers. This army takes its inspiration from the NFL, but it isn’t the first time I’ve done so. I borrowed the color scheme of the villainous Dallas Cowboys (“America’s Team”) for my

What were the Rockets like before they became well-known basketball players? They were just ordinary kids with extraordinary dreams. Personality as a Kid I was a leader. I basically played sports in the street. I never played any boys clubs or anything like that. I was very quiet. When I grew up, I wanted to be... A football player. When I played football in the streets I really liked playing quarterback. Favorite Team Washington Redskins. I'm a die-hard 'Skins fan. It used to upset me the whole week when they would lose. I liked Doug Williams and Dexter Manley. Pets I had two dogs.

Raising Rogue Warriors Ian M. Harris We have not figured out how to transform classical forms of masculinity into roles that promote civilization. The rugged pioneer has become a rogue warrior in an information age. Throughout our planet militia are arming themselves, living outside social conventions, and destroying their perceived enemies by taking the law into their own hands. In hate groups killing is glorified and war becomes a desired way of life. Where classical masculinity had important roles to play in agricultural societies, the traditional warrior has become a despised criminal in technological societies. Why is it that so many men continue to follow the path of a rogue warrior in a technological society? Obviously, we cannot just blame cultural images because all little boys are exposed to these depictions of violent male superheroes, but not all little boys become killers. Why are some men so violent? Male violence comes from many different factors: We raise boys in a culture that expects them to be supermen; social organizations reward male barbarity; we make no effort to teach positive ways of channeling anger; and we wound men.

When our Washington Redskins met the Dallas Cowboys at home at RFK Stadium in the 1982 NFC Championship Game, I was sidelined with a broken bone in my right foot. I had broken it earlier in the playoffs, and it was painful It was frustrating not being on the field, battling with my teammates and helping them try to win. But that's part of the game. It's something you kind of learn to deal with.

76. Remarks Congratulating The Washington Redskins On Winning Super Bowl XXII
But, as dexter manley might point out and a happy belated birthday, dexter this It s a Super Bowl XXII football with both teams engraved on it
http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/speeches/1988/020388a.htm
Remarks Congratulating the Washington Redskins on Winning Super Bowl XXII February 3, 1988 The President. I'd like to welcome the winners of the 22d Super Bowl, the Washington Redskins; and your coach, Joe Gibbs. Welcome to the White House! Fellas , what else is there to say but Hail to the Redskins! You know, I noticed that some of your fans painted their faces half-red and half-yellow; some of them wore hog noses; some even climbed lampposts. My staff told me that that wouldn't be very Presidential; but make no mistake about it, I'm just as enthusiastic as your fans! The Redskins didn't simply enter the history books Sunday night, they rewrote them. In so doing, you gave new meaning to the term ``Capital offense'' [laughter] setting 14 Super Bowl records. And if you will allow me a minute, I'd like to list a few of the more impressive individual records: Timmy Smith, 204 yards rushing and two touchdowns; Ricky Sanders, 193 yards receiving, the most combined yards 235, and two touchdowns; and Doug Williams, the Super Bowl most valuable player, with one of the most inspiring performances displayed by any quarterback in football history 340 yards passing, the longest completion in Super Bowl history, 80 yards. That breaks one record and and four touchdown passes in one quarter and that breaks one record and ties two others. Way to go, Doug. [Applause] You recently showed the world how to overcome adversity and did it with style and grace. It's noisy, isn't it? [Laughter] He's probably on his way to

77. Remarks Congratulating The New York Giants, 1987 Super Bowl Champions

Remarks Congratulating the New York Giants, 1987 Super Bowl Champions February 13, 1987
The President. Well, it's wonderful to have you all here. Nancy was going to invite you to my birthday party last week, but when I mentioned the way you like to celebrate, she said she didn't think that wearing Gatorade was Presidential. [Laughter] So, next week in Washington we'll be addressing the critical issues of excellence and competitiveness in American life. And I can't think of a better kick-off than having the New York Giants here today. No one who saw your performance during those close games in the middle of the season and your overpowering victories in the playoffs and the Super Bowl can doubt ``The Jints'' are a great football team. [Laughter] Now, I know Coach Parcells has a family commitment today and couldn't be with us, but I also know he's going to be a little upset with me for saying that. I read somewhere that he likes to keep everything nice and modest and humble and understated. I even hear that when, from time to time, great players like yourselves make mistakes, he issues only very gentle, low-key, even tender reminders like: ``Now, now, linebacker Carson, that's a no-no.'' [Laughter] I guess the truth is that Bill Parcells is a little more outspoken than that. But I also guess that coaches do have a right to take the game seriously. Not as seriously as the fans, of course, but seriously. Well, as both stories suggest, football is more than just serious business and being successful at it means realizing that. Harry Carson and the Gatorade bucket proves my point. The New York Giants played great football this year, but they also had fun. That kind of spirit has always marked the great Giants teams. That's why our fans have been so or your fans, I should say, have been so loyal and for so many years. I don't have many fans anymore. [Laughter] Well, they knew that someday they would have a great team again and that such a team would mean more than just great athletes, it would mean a team with a heart a team that liked each other and a team that loved fun, but loved winning more.

The Redskins should put a lot of points on the board. They have a proven veteran at quarterback in Mark Brunell and a very productive running back in Clinton Portis. Although Brunell's physical skills are in decline, he should bring an edge to this offense with a chip on his shoulder. Brunell knows how to win games in this league.
