Page 2 columnist WASHINGTON (Wednesday, 5 p.m. ET) I feel like Colonel Jessup right now. You want stories? You want stories You can't handle these stories!!!! From left, George Starke, Don Warren, Joe Jacoby, Rick Walker and Mark May reunite in the trenches at RFK Stadium. I just spent four consecutive hours with the Hogs the heart and soul of the Redskins' Super Bowl teams in '83, '88 and '91 nodding, prodding, giggling, winding them up, watching them go. Head Hog George Starke was there. And future Hall of Famer Joe Jacoby. And former Pro Bowler Mark May. And tight ends Don Warren and Doc Walker. Original Hogs Russ Grimm and Jeff Bostic couldn't make it, but we didn't need 'em. The stories kept coming. And coming. And coming. We started off at the venerable RFK, arguably the Boston Garden of football stadiums. Lambeau Field might get the press heck, it's the closest thing to a sports cathedral we have right now but RFK and Chicago's Soldier Field always reeked of football more than any other place. The seats practically hug the field. The sections look like they might collapse onto one another. There's enough concrete and metal going around to start your own construction company. Even now, even after they tried to jazz it up for soccer, it still seems like this place hasn't seen a paint job or tweaking since 1342 AD. Once everyone arrived, we headed right out onto the field, ignoring the chilly breeze and light drizzle. As May said, "This is perfect. This is our weather." You could practically smell the nostalgia. And then the stories started coming, one after the other.

  • In 1983 and 1984, they appeared in 2 straight Hall of Fame Bowls under coach Jerry Claiborne. Babe Parilli led them to the a Sugar Bowl appearance in the 1950 season and an appearance in the Cotton Bowl the next season, although head coach Bear Bryant may have played a role in their success as well. They employed a former Crimson Tide coach in the 90’s, but Bill Curry was fired after making only one bowl appearance. FTP, name this SEC school, now known for Hal Mu mme and Tim Couch. It last occurred in the NFL in 1941, being done by Lions star Dutch Clark. Jim McMahon practiced it, but never got to try it in a game. Charley Brickley and Jim Thorpe were known for their prowess in doing this. FTP, name this skill, which can earn yo u 4 points if done correctly in Arena Football. He was originally signed straight out of the Marines by the L.A. Rams in 1953 and then picked up off of the waiver wire by the Colts, where he was noted for being Art Donavan’s counterpart and for breaking Gino Marchetti’s leg during the 1958 NFL Cham pionship Game. However, he had developed into an All-Pro defensive tackle during that time and had a great season with the Steelers in 1962. But it is in his death that we know about him. FTP, name this aptly-nicknamed defensive tackle whose death from an apparent drug overdose in 1963 is still shrouded in mystery. Two answers required. The moment that forever linked them occurred on August 12, 1978. With 1:26 remaining in the second quarter, Steve Grogan called "94 Slant". However, he threw a high pass to his intended receiver, who was in the zone covered by th e free safety who was determined to stop the Patriots’ slant passes. FTP, name the free safety, an Ohio State product known as the "Assassin" and the New England receiver he permanently paralyzed on that night.

Washington Redskins History HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Washington Redskins - Team History Washington Redskins, professional football team and one of five teams in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Redskins play at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, and wear uniforms of burgundy, gold, and white.
In professional football’s early days, Washington was one of the game’s most powerful clubs, capturing two league crowns and posting ten consecutive winning records from 1936 to 1945. Leading the Redskins’ high-scoring offense were two-time rushing champion Cliff Battles and six-time passing champion Sammy Baugh—both eventual Hall of Fame members.
The Redskins consistently fielded potent teams from 1971 to 1992, reaching the playoffs 13 times, competing in five Super Bowls, and winning three of them during that period. Washington’s many stars included safety Ken Houston, quarterbacks Sonny Jurgensen and Joe Theismann, wide receivers Art Monk and Charley Taylor, and running back John Riggins.
George Preston Marshall founded the Redskins franchise in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, as the Boston Braves, sharing Braves Field with the Boston Braves baseball team. A year later, Marshall moved his team to Fenway Park and changed the team’s name to the Redskins. The Redskins were not profitable, and even an Eastern Division championship in 1936 failed to excite Boston fans, so in 1937 Marshall moved the club to Washington, D.C.

Higher Ed on the Disabled List
In 1977 a weird thing happened in the sports world. Dexter Manley, National Football League All-Pro end, revealed publicly that he had been admitted to Oklahoma State University several years before despite the fact that he could not read or write. He played football for four years, and he said he left college just as illiterate as when he came. Professor Murray Sperber, who teaches English at the University of Indiana, has written a book full of depressing revelations about college sports and undergraduate education at some of our biggest and best known universities. The Washington Post calls his book, Beer and Circus: How Big-Time College Sports Is Crippling Undergraduate Education (Henry Holt and Co., 200O) a devastating condemnation of higher education in America. After reading it, I think that's an understatement. Sperber's thesis is that the commercialization of college sports and the heavy drinking at parties associated with sports events are ruining academic education. He adds to these problems that undergraduates in general are not being taught well in their courses. A sad situation is made even sadder, in my opinion, by the need of most families these days to have to save money for college for 15 or 20 years, or have to go deeply into debt to finance four years of college. His title echoes the practice of ancient Roman emperors who kept their subjects under control by giving them bread and circuses. Sperber writes with a certain authority about the frantic and dangerous party scene which frequently includes binge drinking and even death since he has long been interested in the relation between athletics and partying and education. He observes all this from the perfect vantage point since he writes from the University of Indiana at Bloomington, the former home of the infamous coach, Bobby Knight, who no matter what outrageous things he did and said, was still supported by the president of the university. Sperber describes Knight as "the emperor of Indiana, living in his high castle", and he is convinced that most college presidents, just as at Indiana, either don't know much about their athletic programs, or don't care.

    by Pat Imig 11/18/2004
As stated earlier this fall at this very column, the ESPN Sunday Night crew was the most entertaining and informative way to watch a football game. Be that as it may, the show is still full of musings that I find myself shaking my head at.
So with this considered, I was stuck on the couch this past Sunday and stuck on what to write about for the week. Luckily, I taped the Bills and Patriots contest. The game itself was a wash.
The Patriots looked crisp and played their “team game” that Joe Theismann fantasizes about, and the Bills looked absolutely awful. Corey Dillon dominated on the ground and Tom Brady hit a few deep strikes down the field, while Drew Bledsoe threw three interceptions and finished 8/19 for 76 yards. Needless to say, the final score: Pats 29, Bills 6.
The game may have captivated as much drama as Romeo Crenell in a 5k run, but at least Joe Theismann and Paul McGuire made the game entertaining.
I give you sights and sounds from the Sunday Night broadcast, with musings that may only be humorous to me.

    3:28:00 PM EDT Ricky Williams
Thanks for the email. What do I think of Ricky Williams unexpected retirement from the Miami Dolphins? This morning, I answered that email inquiry with a response that included words like respect and heart. Initally, I was under the impression, Ricky Williams left the game because he recognized there was more to life than the fame and fortune football provides. I congratulated him on possessing a certain level of maturity and hard-to-find sense of self. I believed he walked away from the game for reasons that were his own, but nevertheless good. Now, I think he's just another great athlete who's too weak of character to be on the field anyway. He didn't quit football to answer a higher calling, to travel the world in search of truth or to reel against the machine. He quit football because he failed THREE NFL drug tests for marijuana. Now, some people will argue that marijuana is not a drug. And, maybe, someday it won't be. But, for now, it is! So, get off that issue right now!
