1979 Topps Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Unlike the previous year, the 1979 Topps football cards borrow from previous designs with the ribbon in the upper right of each card giving the cards a resemblance to the set. Not only is this Earl Campbell's rookie card (#390 - on the right), but it along with the ones you see below are his only Topps cards as he was never able to come to contractual terms with them again (this happened with Joe Namath earlier in the decade). Other rookies include James Lofton, Ozzie Newsome, Doug Williams, Steve DeBerg, Donnie Shell, Stanley Morgan, and Wilbert Montgomery. As with 1978, the lack of a truly great set of rookie cards makes this a relatively affordable Super70s set. 1979 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Team Leaders Conference Leaders Record Breakers

Football: The Ultimate NFL Game
If there were to be an all-time dream AFC/NFC matchup, the rosters would include (clockwise from top left) Dan Marino, Marshall Faulk, Joe Montana and Jim Brown.
By Kenneth Shouler What would happen if we let the greatest football players ever compete against each other in a single game? What if Joe Montana was handing off to Jim Brown, or Dan Marino was beating a hellacious rush to find Lance Alworth on a post pattern? Using a computer simulation, the outcome of such an All-Star game can be determined. Such a matchup is a gridiron-lovers dream, the inspiration for a flight of fancy that takes on a life of its own. The easiest way to split the squads is to have the American Football League, which began play in 1960, go up against the National Football League, formed in 1920. But that method obviously gives the NFL an unfair advantage in sheer volume of players. Fairness dictates that we take only NFL players since 1960 and play them off against the AFL. After the two leagues merged following the 1969 season, you simply take the new American Football Conference teams and add them to the old AFL and add the National Football Conference teams to the NFL squad. That levels the field. Since 1960 some 13,500 players have played in the NFL and AFL. A team is allowed only 53 players each game, so we have allocated 106 slots on our two teams (see tables of rosters starting on page 104). How good do you have to be to be picked? Extremely good.

BY GOING TO THE SUPER Bowl four straight times in the early 1990s, the Buffalo Bills established a record that may stand for decades. And what did they get for that achievement? A Bruce Smith-sized serving of public humiliation. David Letterman's "Top 10 Things Coach Marv Levy Said to the Bills at Halftime of Super Bowl 27" included, "OK, go out and rest on your laurels!" One major newspaper ran a timeline comparing the Bills' losses to the Texans getting "crushed" at the Alamo and Custer getting "whomped" by the Sioux and the Titanic losing a battle with an iceberg.

DARYL JOHNSTON'S DALLAS Cowboys were the NFL's last great dynasty, winning three Super Bowls in the early part of the 1990s. But the former fullback is as wowed by the accomplishments of the Buffalo Bills of that era as he is by his own team's. Those Bills went to four straight Super Bowls, from 1990 through 1993. And although they didn't win the big game on any of those occasions, that run may never be duplicated. "When I was a member of the Dallas Cowboys and went to three Super Bowls in four years, I thought that was quite an accomplishment," Johnston says. "I knew how hard it was to win back-to-back Super Bowls. But when I take a look at what the Buffalo Bills did in the early 1990s by going to four straight Super Bowls, that was a major accomplishment. And even though they lost all four times, the fact that they went there four straight times really makes a statement.
