COACHING BIOS
James Lofton
Wide Receivers
20th NFL Season,
4th with Chargers
Hall of Fame wide receiver James Lofton is in his fourth season as the wide receivers coach for the San Diego Chargers. One of the most prolific pass catchers in NFL history, Lofton was selected to the Hall of Fame's 2003 class on January 25, 2003.
Lofton's receiving corps was led by Eric Parker, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2004. Parker set career highs with 47 catches, 690 yards and four touchdowns. He closed out the season in fine fashion, leading the team with 93 yards receiving and tying for the team lead with nine catches in the AFC Wild Card Playoff game against the New York Jets. The group should be bolstered even further in 2005 with the addition of veteran Keenan McCardell, who joined the Chargers in October and still caught 31 passes for 393 yards and a touchdown.
During an NFL career than spanned 16 seasons (1978-1993), Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards (18.3 avg.) and scored 75 touchdowns. His 764 career receptions rank 14th in league history, while his 14,004 receiving yards is third in NFL annals to only Jerry Rice (22,466) and Tim Brown (14,734). Lofton played in 233 games during his Hall of Fame career.
Lofton entered the NFL in 1978 as a first-round draft pick (sixth overall) of the Green Bay Packers. He spent nine seasons (1978-1986) in Green Bay before moving to Los Angeles to play for the Raiders during the 1987-88 seasons.

He will battle for the starting spot at free safety and will certainly see increased playing time from a year ago ... David is an outstanding athlete who could play a key role in the Cardinal secondary this season ... Still has two years of eligibility remaining. Lofton intense, but a gentleman on the field
Associated Press
James Lofton was all alone when Jim Kelly picked up the bad snap, scrambled and tossed it his way for a 13-yard touchdown on the Buffalo Bills' first drive of the 1990 AFC championship game. The rout was on the Bills went on to beat the Los Angeles Raiders 51-3 and Lofton was on his way to another big game against a former team. Lofton didn't dance or get in any Raiders' faces after the first of his two touchdowns that day. He just came off the field as he always did, Bills coach Marv Levy recalled. I'd been through the balloting for a couple years, so you get a little anxious. When you see how many great players there are (on the ballot) in their own right, you're pretty humbled. It is the final compliment that you can be paid. James Lofton on getting elected to the Hall of Fame "You could read it in his face, but he was too much of a gentleman to give them the finger or anything," Levy said. When Lofton retired in 1993, he had 764 catches for 14,004 yards then an NFL record in a career that included stops with Green Bay, the Los Angeles Raiders, Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.

Read-letter day in Miami Click here for more on this story Posted: Wednesday January 27, 1999 02:26 PM Click here to send a Super Bowl question to CNN/SI NFL analyst James Lofton. MIAMI (CNN/SI) In between all the press conferences, I've found time to answer some questions you've sent in over the past few weeks. Now, we dip into the CNN/SI mailbag ... Who do you think will win the Super Bowl and why? Jason Lofton, New York We start off with a tough one. To me, these two teams are mirror images of each other very similar at so many positions. Both have underrated four-man fronts, veteran safeties and good linebacking crews keyed by veterans Romanowski and Tuggle who hit as hard as they can on every down. Offensively, they have non-descript offensive linemen, receivers who get the job done. What's surprising about the two veteran quarterbacks is that Chris Chandler has the better numbers. I can remember Bart Starr telling a young Packers team that respect had to be earned not handed to you. In his first 10 years in the NFL, Chandler was never respected, even by his own coaches and players around him. This year, through adversity and flat-out toughness, he earned the respect of not only his teammates, but everyone else around the NFL. Regardless of whether or not the Falcons win on Sunday, Chandler has done what every NFL player wants to do in his career he's gained the respect of his peers. Back to the game this has undoubtedly the two most productive running backs in the game, with two great fullbacks helping them out. The game may swing at tight end Denver's Shannon Sharpe is at the top of his game, while Atlanta's O.J. Santiago may be four or five years away from being perhaps the best tight end in football. But when I've talked with people about this game, everyone says that Sharpe is the player that Atlanta must be able to deal with.
