He came, he saw, he conquered his demons, and then Ryan Leaf raised his arms in triumph as San Diego rejoiced. With one feathery flick of his right arm last Friday night, Leaf, the Chargers' resurrected starting quarterback and Qualcomm Stadium's unlikeliest fan favorite, created a buzz among the crowd of 42,403 that belied the game's preseason context. Fireworks detonated, Gary Glitter's power chords blasted through the balmy August air, and a giddy Leaf basked in the moment. The cause for the commotion was a quick, impromptu toss to rookie wideout Trevor Gaylor, whom Leaf alertly had noticed was uncovered on the left side of the field. Gaylor made the catch and zipped in for a four-yard score, helping the Chargers to a 24-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the teams' preseason finale and cementing Leaf's astounding ascent from pariah to possible standout pro passer.

Vick Declares For The NFL
By Jimmy Robertson January 11, 2001
Virginia Tech will be in the market for a new starting quarterback next season. Surrounded by his mother, father, other family members and his high school coach, Tommy Reamon, Michael Vick confirmed what most Tech fans feared when he announced Thursday that he was forgoing his final two years of collegiate eligibility and declaring himself for the NFL Draft. Vick made his intentions known at a news conference held at The Boys and Girls Club in Newport News, Va. "I'm excited about playing in the NFL," Vick said. "It's like a dream come true for me. "The whole time in Jacksonville, I thought about what I really wanted to do. It was a tough decision. But I had to think about what I wanted to do in life and about my goals. I thought about whether I wanted to go ahead and pursue my goal of playing in the NFL and I think this is the best decision." "It was long, tough process. Me, being a 20-year-old, it was the toughest decision I've had to make in my life. Hopefully, I made the right decision. All I can do is move forward. I can't move back."

The value of quarterbacks vs. linebackers, and other thoughts on the NFL draft By Bill Peterson By Christopher Witflee
Two years ago, the hottest parlor game among NFL draftniks concerned the choice between two very different college quarterbacks. The Indianapolis Colts, holding the top selection, were certain to pick between Tennessee's Peyton Manning or Washington State's Ryan Leaf, prompting vigorous debate as to which was the better pro prospect. Manning had never won anything truly big at Tennessee, but he was known to be a straight arrow who seriously studied the game and learned at the knee of his father, Archie Manning, a respected NFL quarterback. The younger Manning had performed well and under the microscope since his earliest days of college. But Leaf really captured the imaginations of NFL scouts who think football is so complex that only trained professionals can understand attributes like tools and talent, so they fall in love with guys like Trent Dilfer. Leaf was known to be a free spirit, which, spun favorably, is a flair for the dramatic. The scouts strained their brains considering the greatness to come if Leaf could harness his size and arm strength. But Leaf had performed to national repute only in his junior season before declaring his intention to turn pro.
