Beware of next Ryan Leaf in draft
Texas' Benson, Cal's Rodgers among potential busts

Running back Cedric Benson doesn't explode through the hole and doesn't have love of football, NBCSports.com contributor Michael Ventre fears.
COMMENTARY Michael Ventre NBCSports.com contributor One of my worst sports predictions ever - aside from my 2005 NCAA tournament bracket, of course - was tabbing Ryan Leaf as a future NFL star. But unlike the bracket, which I compiled under extreme deadline pressure and while I was under heavy sedation from a team of physicians because of a highly sensitive and potentially life-threatening medical condition, the selection of Leaf was performed while I was completely lucid and in full control of my faculties. That's what hurts the most to this day. Soothing the pain somewhat is the knowledge that I wasn't alone on the Leaf blunder. The San Diego Chargers took him as the second overall selection in the 1998 draft. The choice was hailed by many NFL experts. Remember, at the time Leaf had not yet been exposed as a Baby Huey in pads. He had not yet berated reporters for no apparent reason. He had not yet alienated coaches, teammates, fans, media types, transients, tourists, those living in foreign lands and the entire animal kingdom. But as history has shown, Leaf turned out to be the biggest bust in the history of professional sports. Certainly there have been other candidates. Old-schoolers will point to two picks by the Portland Trail Blazers: LaRue Martin in 1972 and Sam Bowie in 1984. Steve Emtman, Brian Bosworth, Aundray Bruce, Kenneth Sims, Lawrence Phillips, David Klingler and Heath Shuler come to mind as wastes of NFL picks. David Clyde was a much-ballyhooed teenage pitching prospect who was rushed by the Texas Rangers and quickly fizzled. And there are many others.

Investor Relations King Kaufman's Sports Daily When all the results from the NFL scouting combine are tabulated, there's one stat worth remembering: Ryan Leaf was once the second-highest pick. Every year after the NFL scouting combine, team personnel officials and scouts issue these hilariously sure proclamations about whose stock has gone up and whose has gone down. This year: Ronnie Brown of Auburn, way up! Maurice Clarett of the Columbus, Ohio, legal system: Down, down, down. Brown had a fine college career despite being overshadowed by backfield mate Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. For all I know Brown could turn out to be the greatest back in NFL history after turning in a couple of blazing 40-yard dashes over the weekend in Indianapolis. Clarett started running his 40 on Saturday and is approaching the finish line as I write this. He may wash out in his first training camp. The combine just might have been a perfect preview of their careers. But it's important to remember something about the NFL's personnel officials and scouts: These are the people who gave you Ryan Leaf, No. 2 overall pick.

    Fantasy Football Draft Tips
18 Comments Summary: Tips on having a good fantasy football draft.
    Fantasy Football Draft Basics
    • Know the score. Study up. Draft a running back first. You will usually want to start your draft with a back. In most leagues the quality of your backs equals the quality of your team. Once you have a quality RB, go for the best player. RB. Do the draft yourself. Bring a cheat sheet (or three). Check for injuries right before the draft. Know the team schedules. Sounds like minutia, but knowing when a player has a bye week and when they play a strong schedule can effect your picks and make a difference down the road. Pay attention!
My Own Special Fantasy Football Draft Tips
These are a few things I like to do. Your milage may vary, but this stuff has worked for me.
    • Take players you like. Get a great kicker. A great kicker can be more valuable than a good running back. Just about any defense will do. It depends on the league quite a bit, but in many leagues defense ends up being the least impact. Draft the backup RB . I like to draft the backup of my primer RB
