Peyton Manning vs Ryan Leaf
Feb 9, 2001, by Nick Not that long ago they were draft picks #1, and #1-A, today Peyton Manning is throwing touchdowns, and Ryan Leaf is throwing tantrums. I know Leaf came out his Junior year, I didn't know it was his junior year of high school. Supermodels don't pout this much. On the other hand, it's almost eerie for a kid Peyton's age to be this together. Leaf and Manning: The problem and the solution, or is it that simple? Let's see how they stack up at the tale of the tape:

GM'S MANNING Made Bill Polian look brilliant for picking him. LEAF Made Bobby Beathard look brilliant for dumping every other first round pick he's ever had. ADVANTAGE Manning

Don't judge Beathard by Ryan Leaf debacle
MIZELL E-mail: Click here Archive By HUBERT MIZELL Bobby Beathard is neither crapshooter nor Everest climber, but the man is an adventurer, even a gambler, at heart. Surfer Bob was a nonconformist pro football GM, renowned, then considerably castigated, always betting on the now, eschewing the drafty future. But it's unfair, even dead wrong, upon Beathard's retirement, to begin his NFL epitaph with Ryan Leaf, Super Flop. A lifetime of solid work should not be trampled by an ill-fated, shoot-the-works 1998 maneuver, snagging a celebrated college quarterback who would plunge into self-destructive underachieving. Embrace total evidence. In Miami, Beathard's personnel wizardry helped the Dolphins win Super Bowls VII and VIII. In Washington, his masterworks were retooling an aging Redskins roster, creating the kings of Super Bowls XVII and XXII. Funny, if he had quit at age 58, after one last remarkable achievement lifting the lukewarm 1994 San Diego Chargers to Super Bowl XXIX by now we would be waxing ceremonial on Canton front steps, ready to cheer Bobby into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Leaf hurting, not giving up
Despite his injury, Ryan Leaf says he can make a contribution if the Bucs carry four quarterbacks.
By ROGER MILLS published September 1, 2001 ATLANTA He dressed for the game. He threw darts and soft passes in the warmups. He look ready to go. Then, he stood on the sidelines and watched and waited. Finally, with a little more than six minutes left, he got in the game, handed the ball off twice and threw an incomplete pass that running back Aaron Stecker should have caught. So, what's up with Bucs quarterback Ryan Leaf? Is his injured wrist, which kept him out of practice Wednesday and Thursday, rendering him inactive? Is he going to need surgery? The saga of what the Bucs will do with this reclamation project continues to have intriguing chapters.

Maybe this will go a long way towards people being more careful with rushing kids into pro careers and handing them the world before they've proven they can handle it.

Yeah. Him, and Tony Mandarich, and Todd Marinovich.
Whats the motivation for these guys? They go high in the Draft, Teams sign them for OBSCENE amounts of money including Millions just to sign a frickin' piece of paper, then we all freak out when they dont do as well as we thoght they would. If it were me, I would have retired 2 years ago with my $11 Mil bonus, and spent it on strippers, and sod for the lawn at my mansion.
How can the system that destroys these guys, be so effin' critical when they go belly up?

NFL 2000 Preview - AFC West
By: James Alder
Dateline: Sept 1, 2000 T
he race in the AFC West should be very interesting this year. Virtually every team in the division has a shot a finishing on top if everything falls into place for them. This is a division that will be tough to predict since injuries will probably be a key factor determining the outcome, but I will give it my best shot. I believe that this will be the year that the Oakland Raiders finally put it all together and finish on top of the division. The Raiders have been my pick to win the last two seasons and they have let me down, but I think the addition of rookie kicker Sebastian Janikowski will make a huge difference. Janikowski possesses what is probably the strongest leg in the league and he will fill a slot that was a big weakness last year. If the Raiders would have had a quality kicker last year they probably would have won the division, so I am giving them the edge this season. Coming in a close second will be the Denver Broncos. The Broncos still have a great nucleus left over from their back to back Super Bowl titles, and although Brian Griese may not remind the fans of John Elway he should continue to show improvement and should become a competent leader for the offense. The return of Terrell Davis will be a huge boost for the entire team and it appears that he has recovered nicely from last season's knee injury. He will take a lot of pressure off of Griese if he returns to the form he displayed before the injury.

Ryan Leaf Retired By Brian Carnell Wednesday, August 7, 2002 During the week of downtime, one of the earth shattering events that occurred in the world was the retirement of San Diego/Tampa Bay/Dallas/Seattle "quarterback" Ryan Leaf retired. The really odd thing was that some of the stories claimed Leaf retired from football. Give me a break. Leaf might have been on the field occasionally, but whatever else he was doing, Leaf was not playing any recognizable form of football (if Leaf was playing football, then my cat is playing chess when it swipes at the pieces on the board). Leaf is a fascinating contrast to someone like Lance Armstrong. Leaf had a lot of physical gifts and apparently no desire or mental discipline to actually harness those gifts. Back in 1998 the San Diego Chargers gave up two first round and a second round pick as well as two very good players in order to draft Leaf. At the time the book on Leaf was that he might be even better than Peyton Manning (who went no. 1 in the 1998 draft Leaf went second). Instead in a horrible career, Leaf threw almost three interceptions for every touchdown, alienated teammates everywhere he went, and generally wasted the physical prowess that many of us armchair quarterbacks would kill for.

Brian.Carnell.Com In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team. Guests Logon
