(July 26, 2002) When Ryan Leaf didn't show up for the Seattle Seahawks ' quarterbacks meeting, Trent Dilfer figured something must be wrong. As the starter and leader, Dilfer immediately called Leaf in the scenic town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and learned of his plans to retire from the NFL. The decision, confirmed by the Seahawks, ends a career that began in 1998 when he was the No. 2 overall draft pick and considered one of the NFL's most promising young quarterbacks. "He seems at peace with it," Dilfer said. "This isn't a profession you should make a decision on what other people say. ... I was surprised. I thought he had very productive minicamps and was learning and had turned a page in his career and was building back up." Leaf did not report to camp July 25, when quarterbacks were due at the team's facility at Eastern Washington University. His wife, Niki, told The Associated Press that Leaf did not want to talk about the decision. She declined to discuss his future plans. Team spokesman Dave Pearson said Leaf who fizzled in San Diego Tampa Bay and Dallas told the Seahawks he is quitting.

Official Site Seahawks act quickly, sign Leaf NFL.com wire reports SEATTLE (May 21, 2002) Ryan Leaf is getting another shot in the NFL, returning to the state where he rose to prominence as a college quarterback. The Seattle Seahawks signed the former Washington State star and No. 2 overall draft pick to a one-year contract one day after the Dallas Cowboys released him Leaf passed his physical examination with the Seahawks. The No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft will compete with rookie Jeff Kelly , a seventh-round choice this year, and free agent Ryan Van Dyke for the third-string job in Seattle. Trent Dilfer is the starting quarterback and Matt Hasselbeck is Dilfer's backup. Seahawks coach-general manager Mike Holmgren said Leaf's past problems would not be held against him. "What I told him was: 'I'm not going to hand you anything. The slate is clean. But you've got to earn it and show me and everybody,' " Holmgren said. Holmgren said the Seahawks talked to the Cowboys for almost a month about trading for Leaf.

The Football Project This is The End
by Sean Lahman The headline in Dallas this morning reads "Cowboys Say They're Close to Signing Leaf." That was the moment when I knew for sure that it was over, that the Cowboys had crossed the line between "bad team" and "disaster." There are signs of desperation, and then there are signs of derangement.
Ryan Leaf single-handedly wrecked the Chargers franchise. He joined a team that had been to the Super Bowl a few years earlier. San Diego traded a first and second round pick and three-time Pro Bowler Eric Metcalf so they could move up and select Ryan Leaf in the draft. The Chargers thought he would be the franchise quarterback that would lead them back to the Super Bowl. Instead, he re-defined the word "bust." In three years, Leaf started 18 games, posting a record of 4-14 and a myopic 48.8 quarterback rating. It wasn't just that he stunk on the field. Leaf was confrontational and divisive in the locker room. Pro Bowl strong safety Rodney Harrison described the experience as "a nightmare you can't even imagine," and Junior Seau said "Ryan's worst nightmare has always been Ryan." Do the Cowboys have quarterback trouble? Yeah, they sure do. After cutting journeyman Tony Banks in training camp they were left with rookie Quincy Carter and the untested third-year man Anthony Wright. Carter isn't ready for the NFL and he's hurt, and Wright is clearly not a long-term answer. The Cowboys have struggled this year, but Leaf is a troublemaker, and he flat out can't play. Why would any sane person consider Ryan Leaf as a solution?

Ryan Leaf lost his job as San Diego's starting quarterback. Now he's giving advice to his coach. ``I just think it's kind of stupid to go with a quarterback for two games, then another quarterback comes in and plays three games,'' Leaf said after losing the top spot to Moses Moreno on Thursday. ``Stick with the kid. If Moses comes in, stick with him. Let him play it out and let him, if times turn rough, go down with him and don't take him out to save his face.'' In San Diego's opening losses to Oakland and New Orleans, Leaf threw five interceptions and had a 33.4 quarterback rating.
