I could spank Ricky Manning in Tecmo Bowl
39-year-old Chris Chandler, who led the Atlanta Falcons to Super Bowl XXXIII, is starting on Sunday for the St. Louis Rams, and the Carolina Panthers are, in a word, freaked
Of course, when asked about Chandler, cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., who recently celebrated his 24th birthday, only has vague childhood recollections. "I probably just played with him on Tecmo Bowl or something," he said.
Which would be kinda funny if some big fat geek like me didn't know that Chris Chandler wasn't in the original Tecmo Bowl for Nintendo. That game came out in 1988 and used an NFL Players Association license based on rosters prior to Chandler's rookie season in the NFL. Here are the quarterbacks from Tecmo Bowl:

Steelers name Farrior their MVP
There are so many quality players on the Pittsburgh Steelers this season that it's hard to pick just one to be the most valuable. At least, that's what I think. The Steelers themselves, however, thought the decision was pretty damn easy. They voted linebacker James Farrior their MVP
There was at least one dissenting vote, however, and it belonged to Farrior. He voted for running back Jerome Bettis.
"When they did choose me," Farrior said, "I was a little surprised because I really think that (Bettis) is the heartbeat of the team right now. He has been an inspiration for everybody on this team. His leadership and what he brings to the game every week is really an inspiration for everybody."
But those are the qualities that set Farrior apart from the rest of his teammates.

Football as a second language
The words may sound like English, but you won't find their meanings in Webster's
By JEFF AGREST, Associate editor
As published in print Sept. 28
Just ask Oiler backup QB Dave Krieg, who is in his 19th NFL season and has played for six different teams over the last eight years. "If you get there during minicamp, you can start to get the hang of it a little bit," Krieg said. "When I left Seattle and went to Kansas City (in 1992), I was able to be there from March until the season started, so I was able to get it down before training camp started. "But, the first year in Kansas City, it was pretty difficult running a new system. Their philosophy of offense was different from the one I had known for 12 years." Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks. According to Krieg, the fewer words a quarterback has to spew in the huddle, the better. "If you have to call the play with a lot of words, that makes it difficult," said Krieg, who admitted the Oiler play calls are a bit on the wordy side. "If you use a system that the players know by number what route to run, that makes it shorter and simpler to call in the huddle. The more words you have to say in the huddle, the less chance of getting the proper communication, I believe." The Archives

Buchsbaum on QBs
By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
March 22, 2001 The Buccaneers and the Seahawks both joined the NFL in 1976. Since that time, the Bucs have drafted four quarterbacks in the first round, and the Seahawks drafted two and traded a first-round pick for Kelly Stouffer before Stouffer ever put on a Cardinals uniform. Three of the four quarterbacks the Bucs took were the winning quarterbacks in Super Bowls (Doug Williams, Steve Young, Trent Dilfer), and the fourth (Vinny Testaverde) led two teams deep into the playoffs. However, none of the four was very successful in Tampa, and each enjoyed his greatest success after leaving. The most recent quarterbacks of note to completely give up football for baseball and then return to the gridiron were Jay Schroeder, Tony Banks, Akili Smith, Chris Weinke, Josh Booty and Quincy Carter. John Elway played college football and minor-league baseball, and Michigan QB Drew Henson has done the same. The Archives

Wannstedt better than his record with the Bears
Contrary to popular belief, Dave Wannstedt was not a bad football coach in Chicago. Now, hear this: Dave Wannstedt may be a better football coach than Jimmy Johnson in Miami. Johnson is a great CEO. He can make things click and, all in all, he understands personnel. He understands organization. He understands motivation. Jay Fiedler Wannstedt's choice as Dolphins' quarterback was 15-for-24 for 134 yards and threw one touchdown in his debut win over Seattle. But in a football chess match, I would have taken Bill Parcells over Johnson. Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren, too. Throw in Jim Mora. And, yes, maybe even Dave Wannstedt. That's why I believe the Miami Dolphins will be a better football team under Wannstedt than they were under Johnson. Now, I know that's a mouthful. Nevertheless, I believe it. Wannstedt's failures in Chicago (41-57) were well-documented. I just never heard an opposing coach privately say that the Bears were a poorly coached or an ill-prepared team. They just had bad players. Johnson has left him with good players. I mean, much was made this past week that Wannstedt was 1-11 vs. Mike Holmgren going into the Dolphins game with Holmgren's Seattle Seahawks. Wannstedt is now 2-11 after Miami throttled Seattle 23-0. The game wasn't that close.

Hasselbeck's 427-yard day ends with key interception By ANGELO BRUSCAS
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER SAN FRANCISCO It wasn't Terrell Owens' pen that scribbled off the eighth loss of the season for the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. It was their own inability to overcome mistakes, missed opportunities and a slow start that kept the Seahawks from re-writing their fate, leaving them no chance to finish the season with a winning record. In the final minutes, they fell short once again in a 31-24 San Francisco 49ers victory before a crowd of 67,594, many of whom departed early, before the final chapter had been written. AP 49ers linebacker Julian Peterson forces Seahawks receiver Darrell Jackson to fumble deep in San Francisco territory in the third quarter. The 49ers recovered.

20 seasons with Hawks in Kingdome Thursday, September 9, 1999 By CLARE FARNSWORTH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER It was one of those days in the spring of 1979. The Mountain was out. The sun was glistening off Lake Washington. The sky couldn't have been bluer, or the new growth on the voluminous vegetation greener. My assignment as the newly hired sports editor of the Kent News Journal was to cover the Mariners game. In the Kingdome. On a Sunday so glorious it would have made an atheist believe there really is a heaven, and that it probably looks a lot of Seattle when the sun is shining. As I walked onto the field from the third-base dugout, suddenly everything was a gloomy shade of gray. I haven't liked the Kingdome from that day and doubt I would warm to the old gray lady if it was to stand for another million days.
