Football Days Are Here Again
WARNING: for the non-sporting among you, this is a post entirely about football. It's mainly for me, so I won't be the least bit offended if you skip it. I was reading the sports pages this morning when I was knocked over by a wave of nostalgia. The problem was that I wasn't looking. Who expects the last paragraph of a training camp summary to pack such a punch? But it did. I'm reading the last section of the daily training camp summary for the Cleveland Browns , and I was suddenly 10 years old again. I absolutely loved football. Not playing, as I was scrawny and slow and, ok, kind of a nancy-boy. But I loved watching the Cleveland Browns. We got a newspaper called "Browns News Illustrated," which I would first read cover-to-cover, and then take out the "centerfold" picture (a player) (fully clothed) a tape it up on my closet door. I remember watching a game with my 70-something year old grandmother ... who was every bit as interested and invested as I was. I remember having a Browns sweatshirt which I would wear on Monday if they won that Sunday, and not wear if they didn't. I remember taping the team schedule to the side of the entertainment center, and carefully writing the result and score (W, 20-17) after each game. I remember sitting on the left, in the back seat, pulling into the garage when we all heard the firing of Marty Schottenheimer on the radio after the '88 season. In many ways, the 10 year old boy lives on. I was right back there this past Christmas when the Browns, through an improbable string of events, made the playoffs. Just like '87, '89, and '92, it was going to be myself, Mom, and Dad watching a big game all together. The game was a roller-coaster, with the Browns taking a late lead. "Don't get excited, they'll break your heart," dad said. I chided him for his negativity. Of course, the Browns choked, let the hated Steelers score the final touchdown, and, indeed, my heart was broken. I still have much to learn.

... PIT Team Report Spotlight - QB Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
Posted 7/7 by Jason Wood and Chase Stuart, Exclusive to Footballguys.com Jason Wood's Thoughts Let's not understate the magnitude of what Ben Roethlisberger accomplished as a rookie. He won his first 14 starts, including a 13-0 stint in the regular season as the surprising leader of a Steelers team that finished 15-1 and edged out the dynastic New England Patriots for home field advantage. Sure, he fell short in the playoffs against those very same Patriots, but that shouldn't take anything away from the fact he had one of the most successful rookie seasons of any QB in NFL history. That said, Roethlisberger's success was far more tangible to Steelers fans than fantasy owners. He finished 21st among fantasy QBs averaging just 187 yards per game and little more than 1 passing TD. As importantly, his play tailed off as the season wore on. I've seen some supporters on our message boards blame that on "hitting a rookie wall" and yet, there was a much more significant reason behind his 2nd half downturn. In the early going, Big Ben showed uncanny poise against the pass rush and was able to pick apart defenses that overpursued. As the season wore on the "book" on him became clear, defenses only rushed three or four and kept everyone else in coverage. Ben wasn't able to adjust, not unexpected for a rookie, but notable because he'll HAVE to adjust to make strides in 2005.

BROWNS FOOTBALL HISTORY
Cleveland Browns, professional football team and one of four teams in the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The original Cleveland Browns franchise moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and took the name Baltimore Ravens in 1996, but in 1998 the NFL granted ownership of a new Browns franchise to a group of investors headed by businessman Al Lerner and former San Francisco 49ers president Carmen Policy. Using their traditional team colors of orange, brown, and white, the Browns rejoined the NFL in 1999. The team plays in Cleveland Browns Stadium. During a special expansion team draft in February 1999, the Browns drafted a number of veteran players, including center Jim Pyne of the Detroit Lions and cornerback Antonio Langham of the San Francisco 49ers. In April of the same year the Browns used their number-one pick in the NFL amateur draft to select quarterback Tim Couch of the University of Kentucky. The new Browns struggled during their first season, finishing with a win-loss record of 2-14.

AFM's NFL Coach of the Year
Getting to know the Real Bill Belichick By Richard Scott Y ou thought you knew him from his days in Cleveland. You saw the images on television. The grim, stern, face, void of emotion, ratcheted with intensity. You saw the newspaper stories. The humorless, dogmatic responses. A personality as cold and brittle as the wind blowing in from Lake Erie, pummeling Cleveland.
You thought you knew him, but did you? Did you really? Did the people feeding those images really know him? Did he allow you, or them, to know him? To see him for whom he really is?
They saw the smiles, heard the laughter, the encouragement and the stories, returned the hugs and the high fives, and followed a man who led them all the way to a 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl XXXVI.
Then enigmatic star wide receiver Terry Glenn was suspended for the first four games of the season by the NFL for missing a drug test, and then suspended again by the team when he refused to practice.

Brock Berlin, who transferred to Miami after spending two years backing up Rex Grossman at Florida, threw 17 interceptions, fumbled three times and lost twice in November last season.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Bernie Kosar walked onto Miami's practice field wearing flip-flops and sunglasses and carrying a drink. "I can still throw the out," he told coach Larry Coker on Tuesday. The coach turned to a small gallery nearby and jokingly said: "Just what we need - another quarterback controversy." Even without Kosar, who led the Hurricanes to their first national title in 1983, another one could be on the way. Brock Berlin opened spring practice Tuesday as the starter, but Coker made it clear he wants Derrick Crudup and freshman Kyle Wright to push for the job. "I don't care who plays, I really don't," Coker said. "We don't owe Brock anything, or Derrick or Kyle Wright. We've got to play the best players, guys that can win games for us. They're going to have to earn their spot." Berlin, who transferred to Miami after spending two years backing up Rex Grossman at Florida, was inconsistent in his first season. He replaced two-time Heisman Trophy finalist Ken Dorsey, and threw 17 interceptions, fumbled three times and lost twice in November - the same number of times Dorsey lost in four seasons. Dorsey was 38-2 as a starter at Miami.

2005 College Football Preview: ACC
Leave a Comment Send to Friend Print This Story By Avery Smith This season is a historic one in the ACC. Boston College defected from the Big East, and now makes this a 12-team conference. It should be an interesting year with teams like Wake Forest, Virginia, Clemson, and North Carolina State as potential sleepers. Also, the now-ubiquitous championship game has been incorporated in this conference and will be held at the end of the season. There are many teams that want to play in Jacksonville this December, but only a few have a realistic shot. Here are the teams that I feel will have the best chance for bragging rights within the ACC.

100 Greatest College Football Endings
1970 - present No. 1 to 5 Writeups by Pete Fiutak
No. 5 Georgia 26 ... Florida 21 , November 8, 1980
At the time: Georgia, led by freshman running back sensation Herschel Walker, was 8-0 and ranked second in the nation coming off a tough 13-10 win over George Rogers and South Carolina. Florida was coming into the Cocktail Party ranked 20th with a 6-1 record only losing 24-7 to LSU. The setup: Walker kicked things off with a bang tearing off a 72-yard touchdown run on the Dawgs' first drive. A 13-yard touchdown pass from Buck Belue gave Georgia a 14-3 lead, but Florida was able to come back late in the first half on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Chris Collinsworth. It still looked like Georgia's day getting up 20-10 on two field goals, but once again, Florida fought back getting within two on a James Jones touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass to Tyrone Young. The comeback seemed complete as Florida took a 21-20 lead on a 40-yard Brian Clark field goal late in the fourth quarter. Georgia's defense was able to keep the Gators from running out the clock, but there was only 1:35 to play with the offense starting on its eight. The ending: Belue was having a horrible game. Walker was the Georgia offense rushing for 238 yards, while the Bulldog quarterback had only managed 52 passing yards with two interceptions. A sack and an incompletion made it 3rd and ten with 93 yards to go and just over a minute to play. Belue had to get a first down and was looking for WR Lindsay Scott, who earlier in the year had been booted off the team and had to get over a broken foot. Belue rolled out around his own goal line and found Scott in the middle of the field for the first down. Two Gator defenders appeared to have a bead on the tackle, but they fell allowing Scott to run free down the left sideline making his way for the improbable 93-yard touchdown. Florida's last gasp drive ended before it could start as Georgia's Mike Fisher made a game-sealing interception on the first play.
