06/07/04 - PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME MEMBER JIM KELLY TO TESTIFY IN D.C. IN HONOR OF HIS ILL SON
Former Buffalo Bills quarterback will share comments with the Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders and Genetic Disease in Newborns and Children June 8th at 1pm Washington, D.C. - If Jim Kelly’s son, Hunter, had been diagnosed right at birth with Krabbe Leukodystrophy, he might be throwing a football with his dad right now. Infants born with Krabbe Disease can be treated with a Cord Blood Transplant, which halts the fatal disease’s progression, but early diagnosis is imperative. Hunter was not diagnosed until he was 4 months old: too late for a transplantation to be successful. That is why Kelly will be testifying in Washington DC, before the Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders and Genetic Disease in Newborns and Children on June 8th at the Ronald Reagan Building and Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. He wants to make sure that other children born with diseases that require early identification for effective treatment are given the opportunity for a better quality of life. Kelly will go before the committee in support of universal newborn screening. Currently, inequities in newborn screening programs in the U.S. allow for newborns to be screened for 48 diseases at birth in Hawaii while California screens for only 4. Children, like Kelly’s son, are allowed to suffer, even though there is treatment available, because of these inequities. Kelly hopes that by testifying, he will draw much needed attention to the important issue of newborn screening.

Jim Kelly's Son Passes Away
POSTED: 11:59 am PDT August 5, 2005 Buffalo, NY Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's eight- year-old son has passed away. According to WGRZ TV in Buffalo, Hunter Kelly died after a battle with a rare disorder called Krabbe's Disease, which he was diagnosed with soon after being born on February 14, 1997. Kelly suffered from what is known as Krabbe Leukodystrophy, which is an inherited, fatal nervous system disease that gives the victim a life span of only a few years. A former Buffalo Bills quarterback, Jim Kelly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He passed for more than 3,000 yards in a season eight times during his career with the Bills from 1986-96 and led Buffalo to four straight Super Bowls, but lost each time.

posted by at 1:35 PM CST on August 5 Wow this is such a sad story , I can still remember Jim's HOF speach when he broke down talking about Hunter and dedicating it to his hero , his son . In this day and age where atheletes rarely even see their children not to mention live with them , it's great to have a stand up MAN that's filled with Class . Best to you Jim and Jill . And the name Hunter will live on with your foundation . http://www.huntershope.org/

He knew the game inside and out, and where it belonged in life, and that's more than most of his contemporaries can ever say.

Jim Kelly led the Bills to four Super Bowls in the early 1990s. Mike Powell/Allsport NEW ORLEANS (AP) Jim Kelly had one word and one wish when told Saturday he had been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first try. "Wow," the quarterback who took the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowls said. "This is extra special for me because my son Hunter will be 5 years old on Valentine's Day. I said I would love to have my son with me when this day does happen, and I will keep my fingers crossed and pray when it comes to Hall of Fame day that he will still be with me." Hunter Kelly has the rare and deadly Krabbe's disease. Doctors had told Kelly his son wouldn't live past 14 months with the disease, which attacks the white matter of the brain. "I've learned a lot through my son," said Kelly, who is a motivational speaker and runs Hunter's Hope, a foundation dedicated to heightening awareness about the disease and raising money to find a cure. "It's my lifelong commitment." Kelly, the first USFL player to make the Hall of Fame, will be inducted on Aug. 3 in Canton, Ohio, along with John Stallworth, Dave Casper, Dan Hampton and the late George Allen. Kelly also is the first of the vaunted class of '83 quarterbacks selected.

He was 8. "Our prayers go to the family and kids," Jim Kelly's brother, Dan, told The Associated Press. [an error occurred while processing this directive] BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Hunter Kelly, whose battle with a fatal nervous system disease inspired his Hall of Fame father Jim Kelly's charitable works, died Friday. He was 8. Hunter's doctor, Patricia Duffner, said he died of respiratory failure. Hunter's Hope Foundation released a statement saying the Kelly family is grateful for the support people have shown. "It is the family's hope that all who mourn for their son, Hunter, would join them in thanking the Lord for his precious life," the statement read. Jim Kelly, a Hall of Fame quarterback with the Buffalo Bills, established Hunter's Hope Foundation with his wife, Jill, in 1997 in honor of their son. It has raised more than $6 million and awarded more than $3.8 million to leukodystrophy and other neurological disease-related research.
