Obit-Hunter Kelly By JOHN WAWROW AP Sports Writer BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Hunter Kelly, whose battle with a fatal nervous system disease inspired his Hall of Fame father Jim Kelly's charitable works, died Friday. He was 8. Advertisement Hunter's doctor, Patricia Duffner, said he died of respiratory failure. Hunter's Hope Foundation released a statement saying the Kelly family is grateful for the support people have shown. ``It is the family's hope that all who mourn for their son, Hunter, would join them in thanking the Lord for his precious life,'' the statement read. Jim Kelly, a Hall of Fame quarterback with the Buffalo Bills, established Hunter's Hope Foundation with his wife, Jill, in 1997 in honor of their son. It has raised more than $6 million and awarded more than $3.8 million to leukodystrophy and other neurological disease-related research. Born in 1997, Hunter Kelly was given no more than three years to live after being diagnosed with Krabbe disease, an inherited degenerative disorder of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The disease hinders development of the myelin sheath, a fatty covering that protects the brain's nerve fibers. The disease has no known cure.

With his movie-star good looks, his genuine humility, and his championship rings, Aikman would appear to be a dream come true for Madison Avenue marketeers, who would like to package and sell him as an urban cowboy for the masses, an iconic heartthrob from the heartland clad in blue jeans and boots. The quarterback, however, is uncomfortable with the adulation he receives and wary of the merchandising that currently accompanies fame in professional sports. "You know, I wish there was a switch I could flip, where no one knows me," he confessed to Jill Lieber in an interview for Sports Illustrated (February 15, 1993). "And then, when I'm ready to make a splash, I'd flip the switch and say, Hey, I'm ready now.' Unfortunately, that doesn't happen." HAMBURG, N.Y. Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly and his wife laid to rest their son Tuesday with a promise to continue their fight against the disease that claimed his life. Hunter James Kelly died Friday at age 8 following a lifelong struggle with Krabbe disease, an inherited fatal nervous system disorder that takes most of its victims in their first two years. "We will not give up, back down or surrender until we have helped every family," Jill Kelly said in a recorded message to Hunter that played as family photographs flashed above a small green casket flanked by two tall stuffed giraffes. The Kellys, who didn't speak at the service, have publicly shared their private struggles with Hunter to raise awareness and research funds. They invited the public to Hunter's funeral, which they called a celebration of his life. More than 1,000 people filled the Wesleyan Church in this Buffalo suburb, including Jim Kelly's former

In response to Bill Wolfers' July 18 letter deriding the possibility of Jim Kelly helping the Republicans reclaim the Congressional seat once held by Jack Quinn, I would like to point out a few things: Wolfers named Jack Kemp and Ed Rutkowski, former Bills players, who represented the GOP in various offices. Another former football player, Phil McConkey, a Southtowns native who played for the New York Giants, ran unsuccessfully for the House as a Republican in New Jersey in 1990 after he retired from the NFL. Kelly is generally considered one of the most elite quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League Kelly led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls in and . In , he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Kelly holds the all-time NFL record for most yards gained per completion in a single game (44), established on September 10 in the Bills' game against the Carolina Panthers Nicknamed "Machine Gun Kelly", Kelly was perhaps best known for running the Bills' "No Huddle Offense", which was a fast-paced offense that denied opposing defenses the opportunity to make timely substitutions. This led to mismatches and defensive communication breakdowns and, in the , established the Bills as one of the NFL's most successful and dangerous offenses.

Kelly's HOF Induction - A Day Canton Will Never Forget - by Rick Anderson It was a day that Jim Kelly dreamed of since childhood. In fact, getting into Pro Football's Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio probably was beyond the wildest of young Kelly's dreams when he was roaming the streets of East Brady, PA.
On a sunny and a hot August afternoon in Canton's Fawcett Stadium, ESPN's Chris Behrman made the opening introduction for the 5 inductees who were to be ushered into Pro Football's shrine. When Kelly's name was announced before the record HOF crowd of 17,700, the Buffalo contingent of over 15,000 started chanting "Kelly, Kelly, Kelly."
Trying to scream over the chants of the Bills fans, Behrman said, "I think you know who this is. 35,000 yards and 237 touchdown passes. The author of the K-Gun, 4 straight Super Bowls. From the Buffalo Bills.....Jim Kelly!"
Kelly was overwhelmed with emotion as he came up after being ushered and embraced the famed ESPN personality who had been to several of Kelly's Bills post-game celebrations at his Orchard Park home. Behrman was a huge Kelly supporter ever since he was drafted originally by the Bills in 1983. He would become a sports version of a campaign manager for the Bills and Kelly through their 4 straight trips to the Super Bowl.
The other 4 inductees, the late George Allen, former Rams and Redskins coach, Oakland Raiders tight end Dave Casper, Chicago Bears defensive tackle-end Dan Hampton and Steelers receiver John Stallworth were all great in their eras. But Kelly stole the show when he followed Marv Levy, his Bills head coach who preceded Kelly into the Hall of Fame a year ago. Levy, as usual, was elegant in his rhetoric in delivering Kelly's induction speech.
