Search Football Jim Kelly: Pro Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly Career Highlights During his Hall of Fame career, quarterback Jim Kelly led the Buffalo Bills to the playoffs eight times and the Super Bowl four consecutive years. His adroit handling of the "no-huddle" offense terrorized opposing defenses during the early 90s, and he was routinely among the league's leading passers. He led the NFL in passing in 1990 and the AFC in 1991, and his 101.2 passer rating in 1990 is still among the best single-season performances ever. Kelly took a circuitous path to the NFL, choosing to sign with the USFL's Houston Gamblers instead of the Bills, who selected him in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. In two seasons with the Gamblers, he passed for 9,842 yards and tossed 83 touchdowns. After the USFL folded following the 1985 season, Kelly signed with the Bills. In 11 seasons in Buffalo, Kelly racked up 35,467 passing yards, 2,874 completions, and 237 touchdowns. He eclipsed 3,000 yards passing in eight of those 11 years, was named to the Pro Bowl five times, and threw 21 touchdown passes in 17 playoff games.

Thanksgiving means football, family By Jim Kelly Jim Kelly quarterbacked the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive AFC championships during an 11-year NFL career. Last August, he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with one of his childhood heroes, John Stallworth. Not surprisingly, many of Kelly's Thanksgiving memories revolve around football. In East Brady, Pennsylvania, where I grew up, football was our town's whole life. You ate, slept, lived, and died football, whether it was playing a pick-up game in the backyard or watching the Steelers or whatever game we could find on television. Any day was a good day for football, but Thanksgiving always was the best because it was a full day during the week that we could watch games on television, then go outside and pretend to be our favorite NFL stars. Sometimes I was Joe Namath. Sometimes I was Terry Bradshaw, handing off to Franco Harris and throwing to Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Turkey Day Memories
Take a look back at the NFL's best Thanksgiving Day games.
Real: We'd start playing right after breakfast. My two oldest brothers, Pat and Ed, would be home from college, so it was a chance for Ray, Danny, Kevin, and me to, not really show off, but perform in front of our older brothers that is, if you were able to get up after they knocked you down. Sometimes we'd put helmets on. Our dad was the referee.

Born in 1997, Hunter Kelly was given no more than three years to live after being diagnosed with Krabbe disease, an inherited degenerative disorder of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The disease hinders development of the myelin sheath, a fatty covering that protects the brain's nerve fibers. The disease has no known cure. The foundation released a statement saying the Kelly family is grateful for the support people have shown. "It is the family's hope that all who mourn for their son, Hunter, would join them in thanking the Lord for his precious life," the statement read. The Bills, in Green Bay for a scrimmage against the Packers, released a statement expressing their condolences.

b. Feb. 14, 1960, Pittsburgh, PA
NFL Statistics Other Resources Chosen in the first round of the 1984 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills out of the University of Miami, Kelly elected to play for the Houston Gamblers in the new U. S. Football League. He was named the league's rookie of the year by The Sporting News after completing 370 of 587 passes for 5,219 yards and 44 touchdowns in 18 games. The league folded in August of 1986 and Kelly joined the Bills, becoming a starter immediately. He was put in charge of a hurry-up, no-huddle offense in which the quarterback calls the plays after sizing up the defensive alignment. That offense, and Kelly's skill at running it, took the Bills to four consecutive AFC championships, from 1990 through 1993. However, Buffalo lost in all four Super Bowls. Kelly led the NFL with a 63.3 completion percentage and a rating of 101.2 in 1990 and he had a league-leading 33 touchdown passes in 1991. A very tough competitor who often played despite injury, Kelly missed a handful of games with a chronic knee problem. He retired after the 1996 season. He completed 2879 of 4779 passes for 35,467 yards, with 237 touchdowns and 175 interceptions. Kelly also rushed 304 times for 1,049 yards and 7 touchdowns.
