1970 Topps Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps and Kellogg's both produced sets of NFL football cards for 1970. The Canadian firm O-Pee-Chee produced its second set of CFL cards. The Topps set was released in two series, with the second (cards 133-263) being more scarce. The first series wax packs featured one of 24 8x10 fold-out paper posters. The second series wax packs had Super Glossy cards, which are not to be confused with the Topps Supers , which were sold separately. The set has rookie cards of unconvicted killer O.J. Simpson, Bubba Smith, Alan Page, Fred Dryer, Lem Barney, Elvin Bethea, Bob Trumpy and Jan Stenerud. 1970 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Super Glossy Poster Inserts Supers

Happy Gilmore we could handle, but Adam Sandler is now 0-for-2 as a Hollywood football player. He would have been better cast as a convict's girlfriend. Advantage: '74 BURT REYNOLDS His star still was rising. He had yet to play the Bandit.

The Chiefs needed a win vs. Oakland at Arrowhead (1/2) in the regular season finale to seal the AFC West title, while a loss would mean postseason elimination. Kansas City leapt out to a 17-0 lead, but a blocked punt turned the momentum in the game which was eventually won by Oakland 41-38 in OT. That loss provided an ominous start to a year which turned tragic on January 23rd when nine-time Pro Bowl LB Derrick Thomas was seriously injured in an auto accident.

Allsport You know the names ... Starr, Namath, Griese, Staubach, Bradshaw, Montana quarterbacks who set the standard for excellence on the NFL's biggest stage. But who is the worst QB to buckle up a chinstrap in a Super Bowl? CNNSI.com users overwhelmingly said Neil O'Donnell and Tony Banks. A sample of the responses we received follows: I'd have to say Trent Dilfer. I mean, he was inept in Tampa Bay, and even though he took over for Tony Banks, the Ravens offense is no better. He can't throw the ball down field with any efficiency, and he doesn't seem like a real leader on the field. And if the Ravens win the Super Bowl, he'll have solidified his place as the worst quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl. The Ravens won't win on the arm of Dilfer, they'll win with their punishing defense, a credit to their coordinator. T. J.

LATINO 796.33209 LONGORIA "Athletes Remembered: Mexicano/Latino Professional Football Players, 1929-1970 is a decade by decade chronicle of the football heroes of the forties, fifties and sixties. In these pages we learn of the accolades of Eddie Saenz, Lupe Joe Arenas, Primo and Danny Villanueva, Joe Kapp, Tom Flores, George Mira and Manny Fernandez. The author has spared no research device to get this story of neglected Hispanic professional football players. Longoria has scoured media guides, books, game programs, press releases, television programs, newspaper articles, public records and magazine articles to gather the facts, statistics and accomplishments of the football Latinos. However, the personal revelations are taken from letters to, from and about these forgotten athletes. Longoria describes the tribulations suffered by Latino football players and dwells on them long enough to give the reader an indication of how each particular athlete turned these burning and hurtful episodes into the fuel of success. In addition, the personal interviews with some of the sports figures further personalize these Latino gladiators. ...This ambitious foray into the history of Hispanic athletes by Longoria is about success. It is a book that links us with a proud heritage of participation in another facet of life in America often neglected by the historians of our country."

    100 Greatest College Football Endings
1970 - present No. 1 to 5 Writeups by Pete Fiutak
    No. 5 Georgia 26 ... Florida 21 , November 8, 1980
At the time: Georgia, led by freshman running back sensation Herschel Walker, was 8-0 and ranked second in the nation coming off a tough 13-10 win over George Rogers and South Carolina. Florida was coming into the Cocktail Party ranked 20th with a 6-1 record only losing 24-7 to LSU. The setup: Walker kicked things off with a bang tearing off a 72-yard touchdown run on the Dawgs' first drive. A 13-yard touchdown pass from Buck Belue gave Georgia a 14-3 lead, but Florida was able to come back late in the first half on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Chris Collinsworth. It still looked like Georgia's day getting up 20-10 on two field goals, but once again, Florida fought back getting within two on a James Jones touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass to Tyrone Young. The comeback seemed complete as Florida took a 21-20 lead on a 40-yard Brian Clark field goal late in the fourth quarter. Georgia's defense was able to keep the Gators from running out the clock, but there was only 1:35 to play with the offense starting on its eight. The ending: Belue was having a horrible game. Walker was the Georgia offense rushing for 238 yards, while the Bulldog quarterback had only managed 52 passing yards with two interceptions. A sack and an incompletion made it 3rd and ten with 93 yards to go and just over a minute to play. Belue had to get a first down and was looking for WR Lindsay Scott, who earlier in the year had been booted off the team and had to get over a broken foot. Belue rolled out around his own goal line and found Scott in the middle of the field for the first down. Two Gator defenders appeared to have a bead on the tackle, but they fell allowing Scott to run free down the left sideline making his way for the improbable 93-yard touchdown. Florida's last gasp drive ended before it could start as Georgia's Mike Fisher made a game-sealing interception on the first play.

Stram's gift to football was his gab
      By MICKEY HERSKOWITZ
Hank Stram hadn't coached in a quarter century, meaning his name won't be familiar to many in this generation of sports addicts. ADVERTISEMENT Which doesn't disqualify us from writing about him, of course. I talked to a teenager the other day who said he had never heard of Brooke Shields, who once starred in a movie called Tilt about a great American pastime, pinball. Not that many decades ago, it was easier in this country to find a pinball machine than a poker tournament. Hank Stram died Monday in Covington, La., on the Fourth of July at the age of 82 after a long and disabling battle with diabetes. He could hardly have picked a more appropriate day, because Hank was a walking flag — proud, patriotic, preening and with a personality all his own.
