Those glamour boys of the NFL with the big salaries and the television specials (why is there no "Offensive Guard Challenge"?) are at best a mixed breed in forecasting breakout seasons. Considering a breakout season to be the first season with at least 20 TD's passed or rushed , the following tables slice and dice the 30 best scoring Quarterbacks of 1997. What we are looking for is a historical perspective. When did the great ones reach the 20 mark? In what season of their career? Is there any correlation to the round in which they were drafted? 1. Antwaan Randle El Plaxico Burress will be the top wideout in free agency this offseason. Based on his recent performance and his shiner, happier attitude, he is expected to command a huge contract. Hines Ward also wants a new deal. Pittsburgh may not be able to afford both players without setting themselves up for salary cap hell. If Burress is shown the door, Antwaan Randle El would likely be the favorite to earn a starting role. With Ben Roethlisberger throwing the pigskin, Randle El could become an instant fantasy starter. 2. Charles Rodgers 3. Michael Jenkins 4. David Boston 5. Chris Horn If the Chiefs fail to make the playoffs in 2004, and it looks like that will happen, they may shake some things up during the offseason. While defense is the main area of weakness, the wide receiving corps may undergo an overhaul as well. Chris Horn has impressed the current coaching staff and could compete for a starting job in 2005 if Johnnie Morton and/or Eddie Kennison are given their walking papers. 6. Justin McCareins

History of The Indianapolis Colts Storied Baltimore franchise came to Indianapolis in 1984
File updated: 1-17-2005 Johnny Unitas was the Colts' quarterback from 1956 to 1972. (AP photo) For nearly 40 years the Colts called Baltimore home. During that time, with players such as Johnny Unitas and coaches such as Don Shula, the Colts enjoyed great success and popularity. The team won two World Championships, and the 1971 Super Bowl.

But after three more division titles in the mid-70s, the Colts went into a decline, posting a 2-14 record in 1980 and an 0-8-1 record in the strike-shortened 1982 season. Owner Robert Irsay, who acquired the Colts in 1972, wanted the city of Baltimore to upgrade its stadium. But with attendance dwindling and the team playing poorly, city officials were wary of such an investment. Relations between Irsay and the city worsened, and he began shopping his team around to other cities hungry for an NFL franchise. Among the cities who very much wanted a team was Indianapolis. Under the administrations of mayors Richard Lugar and William Hudnut, the city was making an ambitious effort to reinvent itself into a `Great American City.' The Hoosier Dome (later renamed the RCA Dome) had been built and was ready for an NFL expansion team.

Fantasy Report
Fantasy Football: NFL Week 12 Breakdown
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus Nov. 13, 1996 To be successful in fantasy football, you must have the ability to always remain objective, keep your emotions in check and not allow yourself to become stubborn. Players that have burned fantasy owners in the past are left in the doghouse and are sometimes never brought out again. How long did Vinny Testaverde last in your draft? How long did the owner who drafted Vinny take to insert him into the starting lineup? Even after solid fantasy games early in the year, fantasy coaches could not pull the trigger and insert him as their starting QB. Why? Because of the not-so-distant past, coaches waited for him to put up big numbers. Week after week, frustration leads to anger and then to the doghouse. That is why it took so long to get Testaverde into the lineup. Other players that were in the same boat last year and are now contributing are Jerome Bettis and Shannon Sharpe. It is too late for you to make up for passing on them this year, but you can avoid sending too many players to the doghouse down the stretch. Players like Anthony Miller, Quinn Early, Isaac Bruce and O.J. McDuffie have broken more than one heart but have either come on or have too much talent to be left out of lineups.
WEEK 12 BREAKDOWN
New Orleans at Atlanta Normally this one would be an air affair, but Jamal Anderson and Ray Zellars could steal the show. Jim Everett is struggling. His only reliable hookup has been Michael Haynes (2 TDs and a 2-point conversion in the last two games). Zellars will attack a defense that just allowed 279 yards rushing. Bobby Hebert still spreads the ball around, just not in the end zone. J.J. Birden is the only Falcon to score other than Anderson in the last two weeks.

Fantasy Football: Top QB should remain a priority
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus July 17, 1996 No matter what point system your league follows, top quarterbacks should remain a high priority come draft day. Outside of a handful of running backs and receivers, your quarterbacks will be near the top of your scoring leaders. 1996 looks to be the strongest year in recent memory for fantasy quarterbacks. More teams are throwing on more downs than ever before. Only the Eagles, Cowboys and Colts ran fewer pass plays than running plays in 1995. If you include sacks as passing attempts, and NFL statisticians do, all 30 teams passed more than they ran for the first time in the history of the league. The leader of the air assault is definitely the NFC. The top five passing teams ranked only by touchdowns all belong in the once grounded NFC. Four of those teams Green Bay, Detroit, Chicago, and Minnesota all belong to the NFC Central. When choosing your quarterback this season, keep three things in mind:
  • 1. What is the quarterback's comfort in the style of offense? It usually takes a year in a new system to be able to run it well. Last year we watched as Randall Cunningham died in the West Coast offense that Philly was learning. Rodney Peete ran a limited version of it and won games. John Elway is in a similar situation. Both should do much better in 1996.

If the sides reach a long-term deal before then, the Colts would have to carry the "franchise" tag on James until the end of the contract. Upon placing the franchise tag on James, Colts President Bill Polian called the situation fluid. James informed the team in February he did not want to play under one-year contract.

A decade ago, Western's football program was on the ropes. Only a 5-4 vote by the Board of Regents kept the Toppers on the Hill. But after clinching its seventh straight winning season, the program is thriving, poised for another run at the I-AA playoffs.
A red mesh hat sits behind Jack Harbaugh's desk.
Its message - "Keep Western Football" - serves as a reminder that his office under Smith Stadium might be a parking space today if not for a single vote.
Looking at the stadium makes it hard to imagine a parking lot in its place. But had the football program not been saved by a narrow Board of Regents vote and massive fund-raising effort, that could be today's reality.

    FOOTBALL: The Price of Power
Senior offensive lineman's journey almost over
By Keith Farner Published: Thursday, September 12, 2002 Media Credit: H. Rick Mach Offensive lineman Chris Price takes a break during football practice Tuesday.
Media Credit: H. Rick Mach Offensive lineman Chris Price makes a block during football practice Tuesday at Smith Stadium.
Last Friday, while his teammates were preparing for the final walk-through before their home opener against Kentucky State, senior left guard Chris Price wanted to have some fun.
Seeing the kickers practicing 30-yard field goals, Price walked up to them with every bit the swagger of a first-grader toting a Happy Meal.
He stepped up and took his turn. As the ball split the uprights perfectly, Price danced around, raising his arms and flashing his contagious smile.
