Instead, he had his mother's advice in mind when he walked on to the Texas Tech football team. Follow your heart, Gladys Scott had said. Do what you love. That was right before she died, a cancer victim at age 42, during McGill's first year in college. "My mother told me on her deathbed that she wanted me to do something that I loved and she wanted me to do what I loved the most, because I never knew how long I would be able to do it,'' McGill said. "So I told her that I was going to go play football, and from that point on I've been playing football.'' McGill left Neosho County (Kan.) College, which has one of the nation's top junior-college wrestling programs, and spent the past year and a half at Tyler Junior College, where he split time playing defensive end last season.

Which team do you think will win the Alamo Bowl? Texas Tech Iowa Friday, December 28, 2001 Last modified at 1:43 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2001 Williams' Tech road ends at Alamodome By RANDY ROSETTA Avalanche-Journal SAN ANTONIO A road less traveled comes to an end this weekend for Texas Tech senior running back Ricky Williams. And the 5-foot-8 Red Raider spark plug wants to make sure he goes out with the same kind of flair he burst on to the scene with five seasons ago. Williams will play his final game in a Tech uniform Saturday when the Raiders meet Iowa in the 2001 Alamo Bowl. And for a player who has taken a long, winding and often painful road to get this far, the end figures to be bittersweet. [an error occurred while processing this directive] ''It has been more emotional for me this week, knowing that I won't ever put on a Texas Tech jersey again,'' Williams said Thursday. ''It's been hard for me to think about the end, but it's also motivated me to play my best. I've been real tired all week because I am practicing as hard as I can to make sure I go out with a bang.''

The former Cardinals running back signed a five-year, $8.75-million contract Monday that included a $1.75-million signing bonus. The Bucs also signed free agent Byron Hanspard, who has not played in the NFL since the 1999 season.

Investor Relations King Kaufman's Sports Daily When all the results from the NFL scouting combine are tabulated, there's one stat worth remembering: Ryan Leaf was once the second-highest pick. Every year after the NFL scouting combine, team personnel officials and scouts issue these hilariously sure proclamations about whose stock has gone up and whose has gone down. This year: Ronnie Brown of Auburn, way up! Maurice Clarett of the Columbus, Ohio, legal system: Down, down, down. Brown had a fine college career despite being overshadowed by backfield mate Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. For all I know Brown could turn out to be the greatest back in NFL history after turning in a couple of blazing 40-yard dashes over the weekend in Indianapolis. Clarett started running his 40 on Saturday and is approaching the finish line as I write this. He may wash out in his first training camp. The combine just might have been a perfect preview of their careers. But it's important to remember something about the NFL's personnel officials and scouts: These are the people who gave you Ryan Leaf, No. 2 overall pick.

Ding, ding: Fantasy football's round 1 at hand
Fantasy Island column by Richard Skinner and Tim Curtis Are you ready for some football? Well, we're not Hank, but we are ready to get the party started. Week one of the football season, check that, the fantasy football season, is just days away. Draft days all over have come and gone like New Year's Eve bashes. Few were love-fests, most lasted way too long, and certainly all were way too loud. Ten to 12 hacks in a room talking football is simply a recipe for disaster. But all of the hot air has been blown. It's time to back up all those draft day challenges, ridicules and accusations with performance. In the immortal words of Mills Lane: ''Let's get it on.'' QUICK SLANTS Patriots RB Sedrick Shaw had four TDs in the preseason, but rookie Robert Edwards looks to be coach Pete Carroll's main man. Edwards missed the first three preseason games with a groin injury, but rushed for 38 yards in being featured in the preseason finale and is healthy. Philadelphia RB Charlie Garner says he's fine after spraining his ankle in the team's preseason finale. He is expected to play in the opener.

Backup running backs step into starring roles
Fantasy football column by The Post's Tim Curtis and Marc Hardin Without all-world running back Jamal Anderson in the lineup, the Atlanta Falcons might as well just mail it in from here on out. Right? The Dirty Bird is going to take on a traditional meaning for Atlanta fans. No longer a dance, it will revert to its more widely known definition - a finger gesture. They can't possibly survive without their 1,800-yard, 16-touchdown bulldozer, the one whose torn knee ligaments tore all the hope of a successful NFC title defense from Falcons fans Monday night. Right? Not necessarily. Not if Byron Hanspard has anything to say about it. If you're an Anderson fantasy owner, snatch Hanspard up as soon as possible. He may not be a Rhodes scholar, but when it comes to running with the football, Hanspard shows aptitude. He probably won't rush for Anderson-type numbers, but they'll be solid across the board as the Falcons' feature back. Hanspard is part of a handful of backup running backs who suddenly find themselves in the spotlight. These backs could play major fantasy roles in the coming weeks and maybe the rest of the season.
