Johnson honored again
PSU tailback is Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for fourth time.
By staff reports
The Sentinel
sportsdoor@cumberlink.com November 26, 2002 Penn State senior tailback Larry Johnson has been selected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after becoming just the ninth player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He shares the honor with Wisconsin running back Anthony Davis. Johnson becomes the first Nittany Lion to be honored four times in a season and gives Penn State 10 Conference honorees this year, the most for any school since the Big Ten began selecting a player of the week in 1987. Kerry Collins (1994) and Curtis Enis (1997) were three-time honorees. Johnson also is the first player to earn Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week four times in a season since Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne, who also was chosen four times in 1999 en route to winning the Heisman Trophy. The Doak Walker Award semifinalist eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark on his fourth touchdown run of the game, a 38-yard effort with 2:38 to play in the second quarter. He had 19 carries for 279 yards, averaging 14.7 yards per carry, and four touchdowns, all in the first half of the Nittany Lions' 61-7 win over Michigan State. Johnson did not have any carries after his last TD, leaving the game early in the third quarter, as Penn State won its fourth straight to finish the regular season 9-3.

Johnson passes 2000-yard mark
Associated Press November 23, 2002
Penn State tailback Larry Johnson (5) escapes the tackle of Michigan State Thomas Wright (43) for a 39-yard touchdown run in the second quarter at State College. Johnson eclipsed the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the season with the touchdown run. (Associated Press) STATE COLLEGE - Penn State's Larry Johnson became the ninth running back in NCAA Division I-A history to run for 2,000 yards in a season Saturday when he gained an amazing 279 yards in the first half against Michigan State. Johnson scored four touchdowns as the Nittany Lions went ahead 48-0. Johnson became the first Penn State back to surpass 2,000 on his final touchdown run, from 38 yards out. That pushed his season total to 2,015 yards on 251 carries, setting an NCAA record with an average of 8.02 yards per carry. The previous record was 7.8, set by Nebraska's Mike Rozier in 1983. The Nittany Lions got the ball back with a minute left in the half, and Johnson ran onto the field with the rest of the offense, but he came back to the sideline, to cheers from the crowd. Johnson entered the game with 1,736 yards after breaking the Penn State single-game record three times this season, most recently with his 327-yard effort against Indiana last week.

Insight Bowl History
College Football Like You've Never Seen It Before! Celebrating its sixth game under the bright lights of Bank One Ballpark, over the years the Insight Bowl has transformed into an exciting brand of college football offering a unique atmosphere and incredible match-ups. Termed as a game which brings you College Football Like You’ve Never Seen It Before, the Insight Bowl features hard hitting action, no nets in the end zones and entertainment both on and off the field. For one night, Bank One Ballpark is transformed from a baseball stadium into a football field for some of collegiate athletics most talented stars. The 2005 game marks the seventeenth anniversary of this game whose humble beginnings started in Tucson. In April 1989, the NCAA gave its stamp of approval to the non-profit Copper Bowl Foundation to hold this post-season match-up in Tucson’s Arizona Stadium under the name the Copper Bowl. For many years the Copper Bowl enjoyed success in Tucson hosting regional match-ups featuring some of the best players in college football. When the Arizona Sports Foundation, the operating body of the Fiesta Bowl was approached with the idea of assuming the responsibilities of operating the Copper Bowl, the idea was met with some skepticism, but was followed by an overwhelming sense of excitement.

Ah yes, those wonderful middle round picks in your fantasy drafts. If you want a way to distinguish the true fantasy football guys from the cheat sheet holding, "who's he play for" team owners, just take a gander at the picks from the middle rounds. During the initial portions of a draft, selections are made and there are few surprises except those accompanied with the terms "homer" or "bonehead". Pretty much everyone who has access to any magazine, website or cheat sheet all know who is within the top forty. Hard to make a difference on your team when so many are following conventional wisdom that likely mirrors your own. And then comes that magic time, the middle rounds. When suddenly the choices are no longer "top receiver, hot quarterback or promising rusher?". When risk increases as well as potential reward or disaster. This is the time that fantasy championships are made. This is also the time that makes for a very long season. This is truly the most fun, challenging and important phase of your draft. The tension of gaining those well-known players is over and the selection of roster depth begins. While those newer to the hobby may think that wonderful first-string will last untouched through the league championship, the reality will prove otherwise. Cheat sheets and most team owners take the previous season heavily into account which proves about 50% accurate on the next season's performance for a top ten player. Where does that other half of the new top ten come from? The middle of the draft of course! Let's take a look at those middle rounders by a few of the more critical positions you will be drafting.

Football: Johnson hits 2,000 in blowout Penn State demolishes Michigan State, 61-7 Sunday, November 24, 2002 By Ray Fittipaldo, Post-Gazette Sports Writer UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. If every Heisman Trophy candidate needs a signature play to boost his mass appeal, this was Larry Johnson's. Determined not to be embarrassed any longer by Penn State's senior running back, Michigan State Coach Morris Watts ordered his defense to play 10 players near the line of scrimmage on a second-and-8 play from the Michigan State 38 late in the second quarter of the regular-season finale at Beaver Stadium yesterday. More on
Penn State: Penn State Report
Just as determined to reach 2,000 yards in a season, Johnson took a pitch left, slipped through mass of humanity near the line of scrimmage and raced into some elite company. The 38-yard touchdown run with 2:38 remaining in the first half gave Johnson 279 yards and four touchdowns on the day, and a milestone that only eight other people in the history of college football have reached. Johnson, Penn State's late-charging Heisman Trophy candidate, became the ninth player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season in Penn State's 61-7 blowout victory against the Spartans.
