While continuing their revival from a miserable start, the Redskins also moved closer to being able to select Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ricky Williams or a franchise quarterback in next spring's draft. But they weren't talking about the offseason or draft picks after today's game. They were taking whatever satisfaction they could from not having surrendered after beginning the season with seven straight losses. "We were smacked in the face early in the season," defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson said. "Things couldn't have been any worse. You have to get some self-respect for yourself. We got frustrated and we got tired of losing, and we did something about it. I think we've redeemed ourselves somewhat."

NFL star speaks on morals, convictions
By Corey Parker Published: Monday, October 20, 2003
Former Washington Redskins defensive star Darrell Green spoke about football, morality and community service Thursday in Bender Arena to kick off Homecoming Weekend.
In his speech, sponsored by the Kennedy Political Union and Greek Life, Green reminisced about his childhood and joked about his experiences with the modest crowd of AU students and alumni.
"I started out with very, very humble beginnings ... I was very fortunate to have the chance to go to university and expand on my dream," Green said.
"I wanted to get into college, I wanted to get a degree, I wanted to play football," Green said.
The NFL came calling in 1983, when Green was drafted in the first round. Yet Green said he is more proud of his moral convictions and his personal integrity.
"In 43 years, I never smoked one cigarette, one joint, never drank, never cheated on my wife." The glamorous world of professional sports offers many dangerous temptations that have tarnished the careers and reputations of hundreds of athletes, he said.

    Football Star Scores in Washington
    By Jim Myers

At a time when after-school and AmeriCorps programs face proposed federal cuts that could eliminate services for untold thousands of children, the agency that oversees AmeriCorps is fulfilling a congressional order to fund an agency run by an ex-football star that directly serves 38 kids on a budget of $1.3 million a year.
President Bush and Republican lawmakers hail the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF) as a model faith-based program for poor children. But federal documents show that it does not operate as many youth centers or serve as many kids as its public pronouncements have suggested, or its federal grant applications proposed.
The foundation, which operates one learning center in Washington, is deeply involved in the daily lives of its kids, and parents laud its work with their children. The program includes daily after-school and summer activities, trips to Disney World or the Grand Canyon and even payment of private school tuition.
But as the foundation stands ready to collect on its second $1.5 million congressional earmark in three years, an examination of its tax returns and filings with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) raises questions about its costs and efficiency at a time when the federal government is slashing programs to save money:

Through his foundation that helps inner-city kids, Green says he wants to "change the world for all that is good, right and Godly." His passionate commitment to strengthening families and helping children is at the center of his long-range goals and was the impetus for the founding of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF). Since 1988, the DGYLF has offered opportunities for children and their families. The DGYLF provides a wide-range of academic development and values-based education programs through learning centers operating in select urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods throughout America. Darrell Green considers the Darrell Green Youth Life Learning Center (DGLC) the centerpiece of the DGYLF. The DGLC was established in 1993 to equip youth to address obstacles they face while training them to provide quality leadership for their peers, family members, and their community. The DGLC flagship center in Northeast Washington, DC and its Richmond, VA, Nashville, TN and Durham, NC affiliates currently operate in the DGYLF network with an expansion plan for other centers underway. He has founded the Darrell Green Business Council for Youth bringing together business leaders to utilize their expertise in support of DGYLF programs. In addition, he served as a board member for the Baltimore-Washington 2012 Olympic Bid, NFL/NFLPA September 11th Relief Fund, and the Loudoun Education Foundation. He was recently selected to serve as the Chair of President Bush's Council on Service and Civic Participation. North Texas (7-4) Vs. Southern Mississippi (6-5)
By Ralph Lauro, College Football Staff Writer Defensively, the Mean Green haven't had the same kind of success as in years past. The unit is giving up 174.4 ypg on the ground and 240.8 ypg through the air, which has allowed its opponents to put up an average of 29.7 ppg. North Texas has however, done a decent job in coming up with big plays, as it has forced 23 turnovers (13 interceptions) and recorded 23 sacks. Safety Jonas Buckles was a First Team All-SBC defensive selection this year, making him the only Sun Belt player to earn all-conference honors in each of the past four seasons. He finished third on the team in total tackles (55) and second in solo stops (42). Defensive end Adrian Awasom joined Buckles on the First Team defense, after leading the Mean Green in TFLs (13) and sacks (six). Markeith Knowlton is another player worth noting, as he currently leads the team in both tackles (80) and interceptions (four).
