MNF's Greatest Games: Dallas-Washington 1983
By Mike Diegnan
ABC Sports Online
On Nov. 11, the Raiders and Broncos played in the 500th regular season telecast of Monday Night Football . To celebrate, we asked fans to vote for their favorite MNF game. They selected the Jets' comeback over the Dolphins in 2000. Another of the top 5 games took place on Sept. 5, 1983 when the Dallas Cowboys visited the Washington Redskins. Defending Super Bowl champions. Your biggest rival on Monday Night Football . The league's fastest rookie. What more could the Redskins have asked for to start the 1983 season? Not the meltdown they encountered on Sept. 5, 1983. A legend is created: In a game that featured 61 points and three touchdowns of at least 41 yards, it's hard to believe that the one play that will be forever etched in the memory of the Cowboys-Redskins game in 1983 was a defensive play. Monday Night Football Green, who set the tone for his NFL career with a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown in the preseason, quickly showed off his blazing speed. Following a block by Ron Springs at the line of scrimmage at the Dallas 17, Tony Dorsett swept down the left side for a 77-yard gain. He would have gone another six yards for the score if not for Green, who raced past two teammates and pulled Dorsett down at the Washington six. The Cowboys were forced to kick a field goal, and by halftime, Washington had built a 23-3 lead.

Contact Submit URL Mail URL to a friend Technical Support Vietnamese Two months before his 38th birthday, Darrell Green became the oldest player in NFL history to return an interception for a touchdown. Now, after celebrating his 40th birthday, the Washington Redskins cornerback continues to shatter records along with doubts that a person his age can excel on an elite athletic level. "He still runs around at practice like a rookie," Redskins coach Norv Turner said. "I know our guys get tired of hearing me talk about him, but our young players are awfully lucky to have an opportunity to see how a guy like Darrell prepares and plays the game." The significance of Green's age parallels that of his size, a mere 5-foot-8, 184 pounds. Over the years the cornerback has soared past and tackled bigger and stronger opponents on and off the field. Four times Green won the NFL fastest man competition, beating such notables as Willie Gault, Ron Brown, and Herschel Walker. He earned 1996 NFL Man of the Year honors and, despite his size, has built a resumé that includes three Super Bowls and seven Pro Bowls. "I'll tell you what, there is no room to boast at all in terms of when I look at myself," Green said. "I'm a weakling kind of guy. But there's a grace there to do what I'm asked to do, whether tackling or running or catching. It has been a real honor to witness the awesomeness of God in how He's gifted me physically. It's incredible."

Darrell Green can lay claim to many titles that no athlete would mind having on a resume: record-setting Washington Redskin, the world's fastest athlete, three-time Super Bowl player. But he's proudest of his achievements off the football field, in particular the creation of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF), which he founded in 1988.
Its centerpiece is the Darrell Green Learning Center (DGLC) in Washington, D.C., a city Green has called home for many years. The center offers tutoring, job counseling, and computer training to at-risk children, as well as chances to participate in field trips and win awards for high academic achievement.

Green's benching Sunday in the first half of a 9-7 loss at Washington became permanent as the 28-year-old veteran has been sidelined because of two errors. Plenty of faces still appear to be in return-game picture The Bears' punt-returning situation remains unsettled as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions and former return standout R.W. McQuarters No such thing as instant offense with the Bears Don't look now, but the Bears' offense is charging up the statistical rankings one week into the 2005 season. Worst in the NFL last year in total yardage, they actually moved up a slot to No. 31 after a Week 1 loss at Washington. Their 166 yards were more than the 120 the Houston Texans managed in a 22-7 loss to Buffalo. Giants try to make Saints feel at home EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Thu, 8 Sep 2005 08:50:34 -0700 Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Derrick Brooks understands the business aspect of his profession, but says that it is "very important" for him to retire as a member of the Buccaneers. "Let's not be naive to the system. For the countless examples of people who have changed teams, there are countless of examples of people who haven't changed teams," the 32-year old Brooks said. " Darrell Green finished his career with the Redskins and he always was one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. Brett Favre got a $100-million contract a few years ago and they found a way to keep him, so it can be done. Is it important to me? Yes. Is it in my hands? No." Brooks has five years remaining on his contract, which calls for a $12.7 salary-cap hit by 2009, a number the club will likely be forced to restructure at some point.

Washington Redskins Tickets and Information
Washington Redskins Tickets Washington Redskins football tickets are back in style in Washington D.C., thanks to the return of Hall of Fame head coach Joe Gibbs. No serious NFL fan is expecting Gibbs’ Redskins to struggle for a second consecutive season, which makes Redskins football tickets a hot commodity in the nation’s capital. Running back Clinton Portis also is expected to rebound from an injury-plagued season, and newcomer Santana Moss provides the ’Skins with an added boost of offensive firepower. The pieces to the puzzle seem to be in place and all signs are pointing to a run at the NFL Playoffs. So get your 2005 Washington Redskins football tickets today at Gotickets.com.

Washington Redskins History
Tue Jul. 06, 2004
From the early days in Boston, Massachusetts, the Washington Redskins franchise has always been one of professional football’s finest. Terrific players, league titles, and Super Bowl victories have made the Redskins one of the more popular teams in professional sports.
FedEx Field opened September 14, 1997 as the Redskins defeated the Arizona Cardinals 19-13 at what was known as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. Named after the Redskins long-time owner who passed away earlier that year, it would be re-named FedEx Field on November 21, 1999 after the corporation purchased naming rights from new owner Dan Snyder. Seating over 80,000 ticket-holders, FedEx Field is one of the NFL’s premier facilities, featuring several restaurants and a Redskins Hall of Fame. With a tremendous atmosphere, FedEx is considered a fan’s dream, featuring live music prior to tip-off, a free playground for children, and a post-game party which continues two hours following the game. FedEx is definitely a unique stadium that all NFL fans should experience.

In 1998, Green completed his Bachelor of Science degree in general studies and social science at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA. In May of the following year, Marymount University recognized Green for his extraordinary humanitarian endeavors and conferred upon him the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters. In addition in May of 2002, George Washington University and St. Paul's College awarded Mr. Green with his third honorary degree, making him a Doctorate of Humane Letters.
Green has received many awards for his accomplishments both on and off the field and is known for his moral leadership, self-discipline, and integrity that stem from his personal relationship with Christ. Early in his football career, the 5'9" Green began knocking down guys who were giants compared to him. His passion quickly became to knock down the giants of illiteracy, poverty, fatherlessness and most importantly hopelessness. He founded the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF) in 1988 to create doorways of opportunity for children living in insecure environments. This mission is accomplished through community-based and values-driven learning centers operating in select urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods throughout America.
