Germaine promotion raises eyebrows
By Kevin Goheen
Post staff reporter
Oliver Stone would have a field day covering the Bengals and their quarterback intrigue. The Bengals signed quarterback Joe Germaine off of the practice squad and onto the 53-man roster and there are legitimate logical reasons for Thursday's move. However, it added fuel to the fire for conspiracy theorists who believe Bengals management will do whatever necessary to keep Jon Kitna from reaching a performance standard that kicks in a salary raise. Germaine's three-year deal makes him the fourth quarterback on the Bengals roster as he takes the spot once held by Lamont Thompson. The rookie free safety was placed on injured reserve Thursday after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday. Kitna has solidified the quarterback spot in the nine games he has been the starter. He's averaging 261 yards passing in his starts, has completed 65.4 percent of his throws and has 15 touchdown passes compared to 11 interceptions. Should Kitna play in at least 80 percent of the team's offensive snaps this season, his base salary for next season will increase to $2.625 million from the $1.5 million he is making this season. "I'm one of 53 guys here that thinks Jon's done a great job this year and think he deserves to take all of the snaps he can get," said Germaine. "Everybody talks about his bonus or what-not, he deserves it. He's playing tremendously well. Anyway, I'm not trying to step in and try to distract from him or from this team."

Germaine now full-time player
Column by The Post's Bill Koch COLUMBUS - The television cameras loved Joe Germaine last year. The director would wait until things weren't going well for Stanley Jackson, Ohio State's starting quarterback, and then he would cut to Germaine on the sideline in search of a little football pathos. Germaine would stand there looking like a little kid waiting for the school bus to show up in the morning and whisk him off to kindergarten. He was dressed and ready to go. Anxious, excited, a bit perplexed. But that portrait is all the camera would get from him. There would be no jawing with an assistant coach. No shaking his head in frustration. And no sulking. Definitely no sulking. Never let them see you sweat. That's what his father taught him as a kid and it's the mantra he has carried onto the field ever since. That camera could follow Germaine around for 24 hours. It could make him the star of his very own Truman Show, but it would never see him sweat. While others would pull out calculators to project what kind of numbers Germaine might produce if he didn't have to share the quarterback job with Jackson, he was determined to play the good little soldier, dutifully waiting his turn and then giving it his all for old State U. ''It was difficult coming off the bench,'' Germaine said Friday. ''You really couldn't get into the flow. But that was my job and I had to make it work.'' He found a way. As a part-time player in 1997, Germaine passed for 1,847 yards and 16 touchdowns, completing 61.4 percent of his passes. He finished third nationally in passing efficiency, behind UCLA's Cade McNown and Washington State's Ryan Leaf.

More than three years after the fact, Brooks still sees red when he talks about the 1999 NFL draft, in which eight quarterbacks were taken ahead of him: Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper, Cade McNown, Brock Huard, Joe Germaine, and Shaun King. Brooks has spent the time since then trying to prove those scouts wrong. And this season, he may finally get the last laugh. Brooks' Saints have played much better this season than anyone thought they would following the team's 7-9 meltdown in 2001. They're taking dead-aim at the playoffs andyesperhaps even a berth in Super Bowl 37.

Football team inches closer to top spot in BCS poll
FOOTBALL: Win in Miami would likely lead to berth in Fiesta Bowl for Bruins By Jeff Kmiotek Daily Bruin Staff The Bruins had a bye last week, but they moved one step closer to saying "Hello" to the Fiesta Bowl. UCLA remained No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series Poll, but closed to within .04 points of No. 1 Tennessee. The Volunteers have 4.99 points in the complicated computer formula, followed by UCLA with 5.03 and Kansas State, barely hanging on with 6.31. If the Bruins beat the Miami Hurricanes on Dec. 5 and Tennessee tops Mississippi State in the SEC Championship, undefeated Kansas State (due to their weak schedule) will be the odd team out for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 4. That would leave UCLA and Tennessee to play for all the chips. The Bruins improved in the BCS as a result of their strength of schedule (SOS) increasing and Tennessee's decreasing. The Vols destroyed Vanderbilt 41-0 on Saturday, but Vandy's 2-9 record destroyed Tennessee's SOS. They went from the 14th most difficult schedule to the 29th, thus gaining a mere .60 points. But still, if the Bruins defeat Miami in the "Hurricane Bowl," they'll be bowling in Arizona in 1999.
