Key Buckeye-Wolverine games sprinkled through every decade

Played on Oct. 16 in Ann Arbor, Michigan scored six touchdowns (which were worth four points at the time, conversions were worth two). The Wolverines substituted liberally in the second half, and OSU played much better after intermission.

Buckeye Bond Continues Into Pro Careers - With Friends and Foes Alike
By John Porentas It's was not a very easy thing for a head coach to watch. Columbus Destroyers' Head Coach and former OSU linebacker Chris Spielman watched the opposing quarterback light up his team last weekend in his Arena Football League team's 10th game of the season. The guy threw for 324 yards on 23 competions in 35 attempts. The big number, however, was eight, count 'em, eight touchdowns with no interceptions. The final score: Arizona Rattlers 70, the Columbus Destroyers 53. Destroyers head coach and Buckeye legend Chris Spielman directs practice.
Photo by Jim Davidson Spielman did not exactly enjoy watching that quarterback shred his defense. As a matter of fact, he did plenty of teeth grinding during the game. That continued on the plane ride back home to Columbus as well, but by the next day, Spielman got over it. He still hated the loss, but just couldn't stay upset with that quarterback, because it was former OSU standout Joe Germaine that did his team in last Sunday. "It took me awhile, but once I got back to Columbus, I was happy that Joe had a good game. You're always happy when a Buckeye does well. I just wish he hadn't done that well against my team," Spielman said.

The Georgia Force (2-1) improved their home record to 2-0 on the season with a 61-47 victory over the Arizona Rattlers (1-2). In front of the largest home crowd in the four-year history of the Force of 13,297, Georgia rookie OS Troy Bergeron continue his streak of scoring three receiving touchdowns in each of the Force's first three games this season. For the game, Bergeron finished with 254 all-purpose yards (116 receiving on 8 catches and 138 kickoff return yards on 6 returns). Along with Bergeron, Georgia was paced by QB Jim Kubiak, who completed 21-of-29 passes for 251 yards and 5 touchdowns. Arizona was led by WR/DB Randy Gatewood with a game-high 11 receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown. Entering the game only needing 26 yards, thirteen-year AFL veteran Rattler WR/LB Hunkie Cooper surpassed George LaFrance (20,480) for most all-purpose yards gained in AFL history with a 28-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. Arizona got on the board first, when QB Joe Germaine found Siaha Burley for a 4-yard touchdown and an early 7-0. Georgia answered as Robert Thomas rushed for two scores from 4-yards and 1-yard respectively to give the Force a lead they would not give up the rest of the game. With those scores, Thomas has rushed for at least one touchdown in six of the Force's last seven games dating back to last season. Georgia was able to build their advantage to 11 points by the half at 31-20 when K Nelson Garner connected on a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Texas quarterback headlines football Signing Day for Syracuse
By Dave Murphy Published: Wednesday, February 4, 2004 Since his days playing flag football in Texas, Joe Fields idolized Donovan McNabb. His bedroom wall in Houston is covered with posters of the former SU standout and current Philadelphia Eagles star.
Fields' dream of following in his hero's shoes is one step closer to becoming a reality. This semester, Fields officially enrolled at Syracuse as the Orangemen's No. 1 recruit for the 2004 football season. He headlines a class of 28 recruits being introduced today at 5:15 p.m. at Manley Field House.
Fields is a 6-foot-1, 214-pound quarterback who hails from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston. And although Tom Lemming of Prep Football Report left him out of his top 100 recruits of 2004, Rivals.com ranked Fields the No. 18 dual-threat high school quarterback in the country. Not to mention, he was named a Super Prospect by ESPN Insider.
"He looked as polished and as smooth as any high school prospect you're gonna look at," Syracuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni said. "Joe is a guy who in high school film was impressive in everything he did."
