All-Time Leading Receiver Jerry Rice Retires
An NFL icon has announced his retirement. Jerry Rice, the all-time leading receiver and the consummate professional announced his retirement after a spectacular career that is beyond the dreams of all but the most elite professional athlete. Rice caught 1,549 passes for 22,895 receiving yards and 197 touchdowns. He exceeded the next most profilic receivers by over 400 catches, nearly 8,000 yards and 67 touchdown catches. Rice caught another 151 passes for 2,245 yards and 21 touchdowns in post-season play. Not too shabby for the third receiver selected in the 1985 draft. The 49ers' selection of Rice with the 16th pick in the first round followed the Jets' selection of Al Toon with the 10th pick and the Bengals' selection of Eddie Brown with the 13th.

By Jeff Miller Excerpted from his upcoming above titled book Chapter One Life Before the N.F.L. Baseball is played in a park . . . football is played is a STADIUM! In baseball you wear a cap . . . In football you wear a HELMET! In baseball you make an error . . . in football you pay a PENALTY! In football we have the BLOCK! The KICK! The BLITZ! The BOMB! The OFFENSE! The DEFENSE! . . . in baseball we have the sacrifice . . . The Pro Football Chronicle, included a section called "100 Reasons Why Football is Better than Baseball" in their terrific book (Reason #100: "Because the Gallup Poll has said so since 1972."). The question of universities providing compensation to players is a topic of heated debate. Revisionist history, however, has demonstrated that the first "professionals" were actually collegians, paid in one form or another for their athletic performance. Although there is no evidence that cash money ever changed hands among the college ranks, some early Ivy League ball players were provided with room, board, and other indirect compensation as early as the 1880s. Despite new approaches and attempts at reform, the game remained a hazardous affair. Minor injuries such as bloody noses, gashes, even broken teeth and fingers, were an accepted part of it all. By the turn of the century, helmets began to show up with more regularity. Made of hard leather, these so-called "head-harnesses" contained padded lining and ear-flaps to protect against overzealous tacklers. Shoulder pads first appeared at about the same time.

The Vengeance of the Football Gods

By Gregg Easterbrook

Cronus tormented Uranus, Zeus tormented Cronus, Hera tormented Hercules, Paris tormented Hera, Hades tormented Persephone, Aphrodite tormented Helen, and now the football gods have chosen to torment the Tennessee Titans. Oh, why such a bitter fate? "Poor wretches, what misery is this that ye suffer?" (Sophocles, or possibly Bonnie Bernstein from the sideline.) Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate') They are rending garments and gnashing teeth in Nashville today, for the Flaming Thumbtacks—possessors of the league's best record and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, the clear team to beat in the NFL postseason—honked to the Baltimore Ravens, becoming the sole home team to lose in the playoffs so far. How could the football gods have allowed this to happen? The T's wandered in the desert seeking a home. They have been humble during success. Their collective head is not swelled. Their opponent, by contrast, was arrogant and showed hubris. The Ravens boasted, bragged, and preened in the week before the game. They called T's RB Eddie George a "baby." Ravens defensive linemen showed up at the stadium dressed in military fatigues. Ravens coach Brian Billick shook his fist at the crowd after his team went ahead 24-10, one of the most unsportsmanlike gestures TMQ has ever observed. Yet Tennessee was humbled, the Ravens crowned, and the outcome was clearly divine intervention. The T's completely dominated play (see Stat No. 5 below), but Baltimore won on two improbable turnover returns that appeared under the direct control of supernatural forces.

The Gravy train takes a look at the Broncos' running back Terrell Davis and Redskins' quarterback Jeff George's injury, and why Terry Glenn should shut his mouth.
Keith Grieve, 8/9/2001 Tuesday's news that Denver Broncos Running Back Terrell Davis has a degenerative condition in his knee should come as no surprise to anyone.
The injury-plagued Davis has played minimally due to surgeries and other ailments and he doesn't figure to rebound to the "TD" that we saw propel the Broncos to Super Bowl victories. Either way, coach Mike Shanahan doesn't figure to lose much sleep with Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson behind him.
Anderson, entering his second year, ran like there was no tomorrow last season after Davis and Gary both were injured. The third stringer ran for 1,500 yards - averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Not a bad guy to have sitting behind two quality running backs.
Gary is quite capable also. Even though he only played in one game last year, he is averaging 4.3 yards per carry going into his third year. In 1999, he also caught 21 passes for 159 yards.

The Life and Times of Brian Wohlgemuth Main

Bears hit rock bottom, sign Jeff George
Unless the man has found God or had a personality transplant; the Bears have made another "season-ending" blunder by signing the ever popular Jeff George to the team. Thankfully, the Bears signed George to a one year contract, which menas there is the possibility that we won't have to deal with him for long. Another thing to be thankful for is the age of this Bears team (very young). Most, if not all of these guys have never played with Jeff, so they only know what they hear from other teams instead of first hand experience. For those of you who don't remember Jeff George, he was the number one draft pick in 1990 from the University of Illinois. While in Champaign, most of my friends who played Illini football came to the same conclusions that the league has found out over the past decade; the man is an incurable, arrogant prick. I don't know if he will make things better for the team this year. He will only have five weeks to learn the offense, so it is unlikely that he will be the major impact player that we need. This should also tell Jonathan Quinn that his days with this organization as a player are definitely numbered. TrackBack

AL MICHAELS: Hello and welcome to another edition of ABC's Monday Night Football, tonight broadcasting from beautiful Fed Ex Field in Washington, D.C. I'm Al Michaels, and joining me in the booth are two new members of the ABC family, Dennis Miller and Dan Fouts.
DENNIS MILLER: Wow, Monday Night Football. I don't want to appear nervous, but I'm under more strain right now than Linda Tripp's Capri pants. I have to tell you, I'm conflicted about this. I usually like to be the outsider, the rabble-rouser, the iconoclast, but I also like a nice seat at a sporting event. And this seat is as nice as they get - except I think I took one of Boomer's old squeak toys up the ass when I sat down.
DAN FOUTS: I was a quarterback.
MILLER: Thanks for that insight, Mr. Peabody. Dan Fouts, everyone. I'm looking over here, and he's giving me that same blank stare I see when I put my dog on the phone. Hey, this isn't the Senior Tour, Chi Chi. Try to keep up.
MICHAELS: Tonight the New England Patriots will try to get started on the right foot after a disappointing 8-8 showing last season. They take on the Washington Redskins, whose owner, Daniel Snyder, has paid out $65 million in free agent salaries and bonus payments in the offseason and is looking for results.

Jeff George signs with Bears
The Chicago Bears are expected to announce the signing of quarterback Jeff George on Monday. George, 36, has been out of the NFL since 2002, but has been working out and looking for a team to allow him the opportunity to come back. He was at Halas Hall for a physical on Saturday and ESPN.com is reporting he signed a one-year deal for the league minimum on Saturday night.
Injuries will continue to keep experienced QB's around the league for years to come - which is good news for people like Kurt Warner

This biographical sketch, "Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles" was written by Don L. Searle and published in the Ensign , December 1994, page 10 shortly after Elder Holland's call to the Twelve. To meet Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is to find a warm, personable, buoyant friend. But to truly know him, it is necessary to know his roots. He grew up in St. George, Utah, in a home his mother and father literally built with their own hands. Through his mother, Alice, he is descended from Latter-day Saint pioneers who wrested a living out of the hard-baked soil in Utah’s Dixie. Among them were Richard Bentley, the first mayor of St. George; William Snow and Robert Gardner, the first settlers of nearby Pine Valley; and William Carter, the first man to plow a furrow in both the Salt Lake and St. George valleys. Jeffrey Holland’s father, Frank, was a different kind of pioneer, a man who conquered his own private frontiers. An Irish convert whose formal schooling ended with the seventh grade, he diligently sought education on his own, became a public accountant, and was a civic leader in St. George. Some who came under his influence in their youth still speak of the impact of his love of the Book of Mormon and still remember his Sunday School lessons. He was the kind of father who helped organize Little League baseball in the community after his son lamented that there were no baseball teams for boys his age.
