The 2004 Ohio Wesleyan football team wrote a storyline worthy of a Horatio Alger novel, opening the season with 4 straight losses — 3 of them by a total of 7 points — before bouncing back to win 5 straight games and put itself in position to play for the North Coast Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA Division III playoff bid.
Ohio Wesleyan returns 20 starters, including all 11 on defense, from that squad as head coach Mike Hollway and the Battling Bishops will look to carry that momentum over into a run at the 2005 NCAC title.
Defense always has been a trademark of Hollway’s Ohio Wesleyan teams, and this year’s edition will be no different.
Junior free safety Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) and junior cornerback Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia), both first-team All-NCAC selections last year, highlight the backfield. Sherman shared the league lead with 6 interceptions in 2004, while Thome led the conference in passes defended per game, with Sherman ranking second in that category.
Senior strong safety Jeff King (Sidney/Piqua), who led the NCAC in tackles, and sophomore cornerback Josh Wheeler (Columbus/Dublin Scioto), who ranked fifth in the league in passes defended, give Ohio Wesleyan an outstanding secondary.

Fantasy Football Forecast: TE Ratings
Leave a Comment Send to Friend Print This Story By Matt Thomas When drafting a fantasy football roster, the tight end position is often an afterthought. The reasoning behind this varies — league format, lack of impact players available, general distaste for the term — each is a valid reason (well, that last one is a bit of a stretch, but I digress). Whatever the reason may be, it must be noted that these days, times are a-changin'. Never in recent history has there been such a deep pool of legit tight end targets. Offenses are looking for ways to get theirs the ball and defenses are trying to devise means by which to neutralize them. Strangely, many fantasy football owners that I have come across are slow to recognize this very clear shift in the NFL tight end paradigm, which could give you an advantage that may make all the difference for your team this season.

Hall Named to Thorpe Watch List
Junior up for nation's top defensive back award June 27, 2003 Oklahoma City
- The leading candidates for the 2003 Jim Thorpe Award have been announced in a pre-season "watch list" released Friday by the Jim Thorpe Association. Virginia Tech junior cornerback DeAngelo Hall is one of 37 on the list. The Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's best college defensive back, is one of college football's most sought after and prestigious awards. It is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, a man who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on offense, but also was an awesome defensive back. Recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame simply as "The Legend", Thorpe also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon. The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists the first Monday in November and then to three finalists the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, telecast from Disney World on Dec. 11. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on Feb. 9. The watch list is derived through a point system based on All-America teams and honorable mentions published in at least six pre-season football magazines. A candidate must be listed as high as third-team All-American in at least one publication or as a fourth team or honorable mention in at least three of these publications. This list is not final. Players not on the list who have exceptional seasons may be added at a later date.

Speedway: Jason tied up
JASON Crump is on top of the world. But he didn't feel like it after a losing gamble in the British Grand Prix at Cardiff's Millennium stadium.
The Belle Vue star was a disappointing last in the final, but still picked up 16 GP points to regain his lead in the World Championship standings along with fellow Australian Leigh Adams.
Crump drew the dreaded gate three, the least productive starting position for the decider. It had produced only three wins in 24 races, and he tried to anticipate the tapes rising.
But he was forced to halt his momentum and was left standing as American Greg Hancock, Adams and England's Lee Richardson ripped away to take the podium positions.
Crump told M.E.N. Sport: "I drew the worst gate in the final and knew that, if I'd let the clutch go as the tapes went up, I wasn't going to win.
"I didn't take a chance intentionally, but I did do it because it was in the back of my mind that I wasn't in a good situation.

Internet sports popular in the city
By Steve H. Ong INTERNET sports remains in demand in Dumaguete City since it was first introduced here in 2000, said Dennis Hao Cuenco, officer-in-charge of Mighty Joe Internet Caf©. Cuenco said the video sport with Counter Strike, a game of several stages involving terrorist attacks and law enforcement, established with the strategy to create, through acquisition, a leading Internet sports, friendly betting and gaming group. Don Mark Cuenco, moderator of Mighty Joe Internet Caf©, said that the betting and gaming group system is based on the number of hours to play by tournament stage. He explained that the Internet sports strategy is based on two key phenomena: first, the increasing social and economic influence of sports; and second, the increasing global importance and penetration of the Internet. The moderator said Mighty Joe has achieved the first phase of its strategic plan to create a leading position in terms of sports content and technical innovation.

Never underestimate the Vols on the road. In 2001, the Florida Gators were double digit favorites in the Swamp. Last year, the Miami Hurricanes were double digit favorites at home. Same story Saturday for the Vols in Athens. But, in the end, the results were all the samea big win for the Tennessee Volunteers. This time, the Vols knocked off then-number three Georgia 19-14 and put a serious dent in the Bulldogs' hope for a national title. The win gives the Vols control of their own destiny in the SEC East Championship race with wins over the Gators and Bulldogs and South Carolina losing to Ole Miss. The Vols did it on defense, holding Georgia quarterback David Green in check for much of the game. Greene was 15 of 35 for 163 yards and was sacked five times in the game. The Vols held the Bulldog running game in check and took advantage of costly penalties by Georgia. Eric Ainge started the game and ran the offense for much of the game, going 12 of 21 for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Brent Shaeffer saw the field for ony one series in the contest.. ipswich town news in brief
Wednesday, June 30
Midfielder Jermaine Wright has agreed a three-year deal with recently relegated Leeds United. Wright was available on a free transfer after turning down Town's recent contract offer and will sign for the Elland Road outfit subject to a medical. The agent of Derby defender Youl Mawene's has said that Joe Royle has recently enquired about his client, however BFJ claims that he has no interest in the Frenchman. "Ipswich have been in touch about Youl, asking for details, but we have not heard anything further" his agent told the EADT. BFJ, however, has played this down: "He is not someone we are interested in signing". Newly promoted QPR will make a move for out of contract defender Chris Makin should he fail to agree a new deal with Town. Makin was due to discuss his future with BFJ yesterday. With Jermaine Wright gone and Martijn Reuser likely to sign for Dutch First Division side Willem II this week it is no surprise that BFJ has made the capture of a midfield player his top priority : "I need to get a midfield player in. With Jermaine going, and possibly Martijn too, it will leave us a bit short. We will only have Tommy Miller, Jim Magilton and Ian Westlake, so there is an obvious vacancy in that area."
