On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Immaculate Reception Wikipedia Immaculate Reception The Immaculate Reception is the nickname given to one of the most famous single plays in the history of professional American football . It occurred in an AFC semi-final game in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 23 The Pittsburgh Steelers were behind their longtime rival, the Oakland Raiders by the score of 7 to 6, facing fourth-and-ten on their own 40-yard line with 22 seconds remaining in the game and no time outs. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw the ball to the Raiders' 35-yard line, toward fullback Frenchy Fuqua . Raiders safety Jack Tatum reached Fuqua just as the ball did. Tatum's hit knocked Fuqua to the ground. The ball bounced backward several yards. Steelers running back Franco Harris , after initially blocking on the play, had moved forward in case Bradshaw needed another eligible receiver. He scooped up the ball just before it hit the ground, apparently off the tops of his shoes, and ran the rest of the way downfield to score the touchdown that gave the Steelers a 12-7 lead with five seconds remaining in the game. The critical question was: Whom did the ball bounce off? If it bounced off Fuqua, and then Harris was the next to touch the ball, the reception was illegal under the rules of the time, which did not allow two offensive players to touch a pass in succession; the Raiders would gain possession and a sure win. If the ball bounced off Tatum, or if it bounced off Fuqua and then Tatum, the reception was legal, as a defensive player was the last to touch the ball.

FOOTBALL PHYSICS - NEW FRONTIER FOR COACH'S CHALLENGES
Michael Giberson Another story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had me wondering whether football coaches may want to sign up a physicist to advise on potential challenges to referee decisions. Timothy Gay, of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has written Football Physics: The Science of the Game , in which he illustrates a number of the principles of physics with football examples. In the book he takes on the "Immaculate Reception," a 32-year old fluke of a play that enabled the Pittsburgh Steelers to beat the Oakland Raiders. The newspaper recalls: With 26 seconds left to play and the Steelers trailing by a point, Terry Bradshaw scrambles on fourth down, then desperately rifles the ball to Fuqua, his running back. The ball arrives at the same time as Tatum, the Raider free safety who breaks up the play and sends Fuqua flying. The deflected ball, however, flies backward and into the hands of Harris, who runs untouched into the end zone for the winning touchdown. Harris' catch was ruled fair, on the assumption that it bounced off Tatum. But if the ball actually hit Fuqua, the catch would have been illegal under NFL rules at the time.

By Patrick Mondout Topps massive set of football cards for 1973 grew to 528 cards - a figure it would remain at for a decade. The increase in the size of the football card set coincided with an increase in the size of the basketball card set and a decrease in the size of the baseball card set One unusual feature of this set is that none of the cards feature any wording on the fronts that would indicated the player is was an NFL All-Pro nor is there an All-Pro subset. This was the first Topps set to be released all at once instead of in series and it was the last to feature a card of Joe Namath as Topps and his agent never agreed to terms again. The predominately orange backs featured a brief biography, statistics, and a cartoon with a trivia question. Rookie cards for 1973 include Franco Harris, Ken Stabler, Bob Kuechenberg, Ken Anderson, Jack Youngblood, Jack Ham, Dan Dierdorf, Art Shell, Jim Langer, and Dwight White. 1973 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Playoffs Boyhood Photos Leaders

By Patrick Mondout Topps 1974 football cards featured a goal post separating the main elements (picture, player name, position) and what can be thought of as an end-zone at the bottom with the team's name. For the first time, the cards were distributed all at once instead of in series; all 528 cards were available in wax packs early in the season. The card backs featured a short biography, statistics, and a cartoon featuring something interesting about the player. The bottom third of the back was devoted to a game you could play with the cards. The final card of Johnny Unitas from his playing days is in this set. On the other side of the spectrum, rookie cards included Chuck Foreman, Joe Ferguson, Greg Pruit, Ahmad Rashad, Harold Carmichael, Terry Metcalf, Sam Cunningham and Ray Guy. The league was formed in as the American Professional Football Association , which adopted the name "National Football League" in . The NFL is one of the major professional sports leagues of North America Prior to the 1960s, the most popular version of American football was played collegiately. The NFL's greatest spurt in popularity came in the 1960s and 1970s, after the 1958 NFL championship game which went into overtime, and with the merger of the rival American Football League (1960-1969) which introduced major on- and off-the-field innovations that were eventually adopted by the NFL. In recent decades, the NFL traditionally started the regular season on Labor Day Weekend and lasted through Christmas week. However, declining television ratings on Labor Day have pushed the start of the regular season ahead one week (which is where scheduling currently stands), although for the past two years, the regular season has begun on the Thursday after Labor Day. But the Giants made a determined goal-line stand, got the ball on their own 5-yard line, and drove downfield for a TD. In the 4th quarter, Frank Gifford caught a TD pass to give the Giants a 17-14 lead. But Colts star quarterback Johnny Unitas passed his team down the field, completing 3 to Ray Berry for 62 yards. With 7 seconds left, the Colts kicked a field goal to force the first post-season overtime. In the extra period, the Giants punted and Unitas went to work. He took the Colts 80 yards before fullback Alan "The Horse" Ameche bulled into the end zone from the 1-yard line to end what many still call "the greatest game ever played." "The Immaculate Reception" December 23, 1972, AFC Divisional Playoffs, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh Steelers 13, Oakland Raiders 7 Down 7-6, with just over a minute left, the Steelers' Terry Bradshaw fired a pass downfield to halfback John Fuqua, who was hit hard by Raiders defender Jack Tatum just as the ball arrived. It hit one of the players and bounced in the air and, luckily for the Steelers, into the hands of rookie running back Franco Harris. After his "immaculate reception," Harris ran 42 yards to score with 5 seconds left.
