One Battle After Another For a Courageous Brett Favre
By Austin Walton Published: Tuesday, November 2, 2004 At the age of 35, he is already considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. His hall of fame-type resume speaks for itself, 14 years of experience in the NFL as quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, one Super Bowl ring, over 48,000 yards passing, 364 touchdowns passing, and has never missed a game because of injury.
Some die-hard football fans would consider trading all they have for an opportunity to be in the same shoes as him. While some NFL quarterbacks would love to be mentioned in the same breath. But what they all need to understand is that although his accomplishments on the football field are considered legendary, his accomplishments off the field are even greater. These past 11 months for Brett Favre have been the hardest any one person can endure. He has lost love ones to natural and tragic deaths, and his wife recently has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Favre is faced with his biggest challenge yet, how to can he stay strong and passionate about football, after dealing with such a sad story?
On Dec. 22, 2003, Irvin Favre died from a heart attack the Sunday morning before his son Brett took the football field to play against the Oakland Raiders. Brett was very close to his father who taught him everything about life and football. The elder Favre was Brett's high school football coach at North Central High School in Mississippi. Although Brett was the head football coach's son, it had its benefits and drawbacks.

Brett Favre is the kind of player who makes the impossible possible, pulling out his biggest plays when all looks lost and the Packers look to be going down in defeat. Spinning around, on the run, sidearm slinging the ball downfield, there's a magic to his play that seems old school, seems playground, seems NFL Street out of the Xbox and onto your TV screens every Sunday.
To mark his great achievement, Favre took time to hang with the media and answer ten pressing questions. Here's what he had to say via conference call as he prepared for #200.
1: When you reach these milestones like your 200th regular season start in a row, do you pay attention to that stuff? Are you aware of how many in a row you've played each week?

Brett Favre used to joke that he became a great quarterback in spite of his father, Irvin, who was his high school coach and never let him air it out. Truth was, the Green Bay Packers' star passer credited his father, who died Sunday in Mississippi at age 58, for everything he accomplished in football.

Bart Starr has nothing but admiration for Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre's decision to publicly criticize his teammate Javon Walker , who has decided to hold out for a new contract. The Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback said the future Hall of Fame quarterback was exercising his role as a leader on the team. Starr said it is entirely appropriate for Favre to criticize the contract issues of another player since Favre is considering the needs of the team. Starr, 71, made his comments during a telephone interview from the Los Angeles Coliseum, where he was taking part in the taping of a television commercial produced by the National Football League to promote Super Bowl XL.

Game Summaries Week 1 at DET - Favre attempted to get the Packer offense in gear, but he just could not connect for the long pass he kept trying to hit all afternoon. Favre used nine different receivers, spreading the ball around to everyone. The longest completion was on a RB screen to Ahman Green where he dashed for a 20 yard rush for a first down. In the third quarter, Favre appeared to throw an incompletion from the pocket as the ball squirted out of his hand, but the field officials ruled it as a fumble which Detroit recovered. The fumble led to three additional points for Detroit, making the score 10-3 at the time. With the clock running down and the lack of a running game, Favre tried to force the game towards a Packers’ victory. Favre pushed until the end of the contest, attempting many passes that are difficult at best to complete. The result was that the final two possessions for Favre resulted in his second and third turnovers, the only two interceptions in the game.

Brett Favre biography
In 1997 Brett Favre led the Green Bay Packers to the team's first Super Bowl Championship since Vince Lombardi was coach. He is known for more than football only, however.
He led his team, the Green Bay Packers, to its first Super Bowl championship, in January 1997, since Vince Lombardi was coach, almost three decades earlier. The team won its first championship in 29 seasons, a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI. Bret Favre also led his team to another Super Bowl the next season in Super Bowl XXXII, in which the Packers lost to the Denver Broncos 31-24. Despite playing with a painful thumb injury on his right or passing hand throughout the season in 1999, Favre became the most durable professional quarterback ever, playing in his 125th straight game. He beat the record of Ron Jaworski of the Philadelphia Eagles of 116 straight games from 1977-1984. He is the only quarterback ever to be named NFL “Most Valuable Player” for three consecutive seasons—1995-1997. Bret Favre is known for more than football only, however. His Bret Favre Forward Foundation, which was established to support charities that provide aid for disadvantaged or disabled children in Mississippi or Wisconsin, has donated more than $395,000 to charities. The charity has given money to: Special Olympics; Cystic Fibrosis; Gaits to Success; Make-A-Wish; Hope Haven; U.S.M. Foundation: Cerebral Palsy; Mississippi Chapter Make-A-Wish Foundation; Mississippi Special Olympics; MHG Development Foundation and Candlelighter for Childhood Cancer.
