John Elway had a tremendous college career at Stanford, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy balloting in his senior year. After breaking virtually every Pac-10 and Stanford passing record, John was selected by the Colts with the first overall pick in the 1983 Draft. Threatening to quit football and play baseball for the Yankees if not traded from the Colts, Elway got his wish and was shipped to the Denver Broncos before the 1983 season. John Elway enjoyed success immediately with Denver and by 1984 he was one of the best in the league.

Pro Football Weekly's tribute to John Elway
It was officially announced on Sunday, May 2, when Elway confirmed what had been known for several days. After a 16-year career in which the pinnacle of success eluded him until the final two years of his career, the Denver quarterback is bypassing an opportunity to try to become the first-ever NFL QB to win three consecutive Super Bowls. Blame it on assorted injuries, which caused Elway to miss three full games last season and parts of three others, and a knee that he says will have to be replaced eventually. Like Michael Jordan, the man best-known for engineering game-winning drives has decided to go out at the top of his game. His place in NFL history is assured. Now, fans can sit back and debate just where Elway ranks among the all-time great quarterbacks. As our tribute to Elway, we have assembled several stories that have appeared in Pro Football Weekly In Print

(July 26, 2004) My first meeting with John Elway took place in the fall of 1967. At the time, his father, Jack, was an assistant coach at the University of Montana. I would visit, and Jack would bring John with him to practice. John would throw balls and keep a close eye on his father's practice. You could tell he had his heart set on being a football player, even though he was only 7 years old. NFL Network

Back then, the Cowboys would go to Thousand Oaks, Calif., for training camp, so the Elways would come to our practices, watch us scrimmage, then eat with us and watch more practice. When he wasn't watching us practice, John's favorite hobby was collecting autographs of our players. I believe his favorite guy was Roger Staubach, our quarterback. Little did anyone know then just how telling this would become. In the spring of 1981, in what was John's junior year at Stanford, I spent three days with him in Lake Geneva, Wisc., where we had our

CANTON, Ohio (Aug. 8, 2004) He drew our jeers as the spoiled brat from Stanford who told the NFL where he would play, not the other way around. He drew our cheers when, after some early struggles, he showed the remarkable talent that the top overall pick of the draft is supposed to show and especially an uncanny knack for winning games in the fourth quarter. He drew our tears after three ugly Super Bowl losses and the very real prospect that he would never know the feeling of winning the big one. He drew our admiration for having enough perseverance to finally win it all not once, but twice, and then walking away while he was on top. Now John Elway draws our deep appreciation for sharing, so eloquently and thoroughly, the crowning individual achievement of his football career. "Always make your family proud."

Ever since I was little, I knew I would never play football. When I was six, I had my left kidney removed because it was not functioning correctly. At the time, football was my favorite sport, and like any kid, I had a dream. Unfortunately, that was impossible, so I found a substitute for myself: John Elway.
At the time, of course, I was only six and it was early in Elway's career, so I had no idea what a class act he was. John Elway is now 38 and, according to most people's standards, still firing on all cylinders. Although he is a great talent in the National Football League, that's not the only reason he's my hero.
After the success-filled 1997 season, Elway chose to restructure his contract from $4.65 million to somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000, so the Broncos could sign more talented free agents to help them defend their title.
Although people one decade ago wouldn't have thought this a sacrifice, today stars have shifted from focusing on winning to money, even leaving a winning team for a sub par team because of one million dollars' difference in contract money. Though this does not apply to all who play, especially the veterans, it has become the choice of many modern sports players. John Elway could have thought only of himself and kept his higher salary, but didn't. He is definitely my definition of a hero. Q

Overall **** (out of 5 stars)
"John Elway's Quarterback" is like playing a real football game. You can choose from several plays, such as sneak, shotgun, bootleg, etc. for offensive playing. For defensive playing you can choose from stunt, blitz, goal-line and zone, etc. After you choose a play and are the offense, you're the quarterback and you can pass (if you do shotgun or bomb) and can run (if you do sneak or bootleg). If you are the defense, you can choose to go after the quarterback or go back and intercept a pass.
The graphics are excellent and the song doesn't get tedious either. You can choose from actual plays that were used in professional football games. The game has extra features that other games (like Tecmo Bowl) don't have. It keeps track of the downs, yards remaining until the next first down, which yard line you're on, how much time is left in the quarter and how many yards you gained or lost on your last play. And, of course, it posts the score each time you choose a play. I would highly recommend "John Elway's Quarterback" because when you play it, you actually think you're playing in a real football game and can even sense the excitement of the crowd.n

Elway led Broncos on "The Drive"

- It is known, simply, as "The Drive." Quarterback John Elway led the Denver Broncos back from defeat numerous teams, but his performance in the AFC championship game against the Cleveland Browns topped the list of his heroics, elevating him to superstar status. Trailing 20-13 with 5½ minutes left in the fourth quarter at Cleveland, Denver took over on its two, 98 yards away from the tying touchdown. "I suddenly flashed on something I was thinking about before the game," Elway said later. "Great quarterbacks make great plays in great games. That's what it's all about, isn't it?" Elway made like a great quarterback, smartly passing and scrambling the Broncos down to the Browns' 14-yard line. After a nine-yard run by Elway moved the ball to the five, on third-and-one he fired a dart in the end zone to Mark Jackson with 37 seconds left. Rich Karlis' extra point tied the game. In overtime, two Elway completions were good for 50 yards, setting up a 33-yard field goal by Karlis that gave the Broncos a 23-20 victory and sent them to the Super Bowl.

Elway excelled in final minutes
By Bob Carter

"If people dislike me because they think I'm a spoiled brat because I get upset if I lose, that's okay with me. Because I'm all about winning. I like to win and I don't like to lose," says John Elway on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The numbers never told John Elway's story. They built him up at times, flogged him at others. His overall statistics were impressive, but his true measure as a player ran straight to his heart. John Elway is the only player to amass 50,000 yards passing and 3,000 rushing. The Denver Broncos star found ways to win. Strangely, it took two championships at the end of his career to certify his stature, to soften the mark of three Super Bowl losses. After 16 seasons, Elway retired as the winningest starting quarterback in NFL history with a 148-82-1 record. He didn't always lead in passing statistics, but he instilled fear in opponents. A renowned scrambler, Elway led 47 winning or tying drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, more than any quarterback. "In tight situations I stop worrying about turnovers," he said. "There's no pressure. I can just cut it loose." At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, he was always good at cutting loose, zipping the ball at unearthly speed. Critics, though, saw him as one-dimensional, devoid of the touch pass and slow to read defenses. They looked at pallid touchdown-to-interception ratios and figured his inconsistency would foil him.

Football legend John Elway made
Prevacid part of his game plan
Former professional football player John Elway has taken many journeys in his life—from his record-setting collegiate and professional seasons to winning the “big game” and achieving lasting career recognition. During much of that time, John was also on a different type of journey—a personal heartburn journey. He experienced heartburn after almost every meal despite trying over the counter treatment and changing his diet. John also had trouble swallowing and at times, trouble sleeping because of his heartburn. Yet he didn’t realize these symptoms could be a sign of something more serious.
Finally, after years of suffering, he took a time-out to see his doctor. John learned that his “heartburn” was actually acid reflux disease. Acid reflux disease is a condition in which stomach contents, including acid, repeatedly flow back into the esophagus. Over time, this could lead to serious damage to the esophagus. John teamed up with his doctor to find an effective treatment plan to manage his heartburn and acid reflux disease. His doctor prescribed Prevacid, because it helps prevent the acid, stops the pain and allows the body to heal.
