jacklummus.com Home Page Search Contact Us Site Map Texas High School Football Hall Of Fame Jack Lummus attended Ennis High School in Ennis, Texas from September of 1931 through May of 1933. He was an outstanding end for the Ennis Lions during those early years of the “Great Depression.” Brooks Conover was head coach at Ennis leading the Lions through the 1933 season with only one loss. His team was undefeated and unscored upon through the first five games. On November 3, State Home defeated Ennis 12 to 6 at Tiger Field in Corsicana. In the final game of the season on Friday, November 24, the Waxahachie Indians and Ennis Lions lined up for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at Yoakum Field in Waxahachie. Ennis defeated Waxahachie 24 to 7. Jack scored two touchdowns, one on an end run and the other on a pass reception, and blocked a punt that led to a third touchdown. During the season, Ennis scored 233 points to their opponents 26. State Home, representing District 17-B, advanced to bi-district defeating Mart, but lost to Gilmer in the regional Class B championship game. Jack was growing into a tall, lean, muscular young man with great hands, and the speed and grace of a gazelle. He had earned all-district honors in both his sophomore and junior years. But bad luck followed Jack into the 1934 football season. He missed both semesters of his senior year. He was critically ill with influenza pneumonia. His illness was severe and lengthy, and stole away his vim and vigor, but by spring his health had returned, and in the summer of 1935 he was offered, and accepted, a two year athletics scholarship to Texas Military College in Terrell, Texas. He enrolled in the high school department, and played junior college football in 1935 and 1936 earning all-conference honors before enrolling in Baylor University in September of 1937.

If this book were a TV show, this would be the place we'd recap the action. Feel free to play along at home. So, why do men love football? Action . Crunching bones, banging heads and huge men flying through the air with the greatest of ease. That's what we want to see. Over and over and over again. It's not just a job, it's an adventure. Violence . The natural hangover from too much action. "Kill him! KILL him!" We don't want anybody to actually die on the field, but would it be so wrong to temporarily disable a few of the other team's guys? At the height of passion, a strong hit in the backfield sends us over the edge. Skill envy . What's the big deal? Anybody could do that!

NFL Draft 1992 ... Who should they have taken? By Pete Fiutak
I love the NFL draft for the fun of watching the college players realize their dream to hit the big time, the instant betterment of the teams and most of all, the second guessing. Here's a look at past NFL drafts looking to see what each team needed, who they all took in the first round and in hindsight, who should've gone based on how their pro careers turned out (forgetting about proper coaching and other circumstances). If each team could draft knowing what we all know now and not taking future drafts into account, this is how the first round should've gone. There were 28 picks in the first round of the 1992 draft. In parentheses is the round the player was actually taken. Who Went Who Should've Been Taken 1. Indianapolis Colts

O LITTLE TOWN OF GREEN BAY
(Sung to "O Little Town Of Bethlehem")
O little town of Green Bay, how still we see thee lie.
Amid the deep and snowy sleep of football days gone by.
Yet in those dark years shineth, an everlasting goal,
The hopes and fears of 29 years, to win the Super Bowl.
O little place called Titletown, the Pack was once the best.
With Hornung and yon Max McGee, Ray Nitschke and all the rest.
Bart Starr and Carroll Dale, and Lee Roy Caffey,
Elijah Pitts, Jim Taylor and Herbert Adderley.
O little town way up North, how sad was the day, When Vince became the Redskins coach, good-bye to Green Bay. Phil Bengston tried to coach them and so did Dan Devine. Bart Starr and Forest Gregg did too, their records weren't so fine. O little town called Green Bay, O town of Green and Gold. The story of the team of Wolf and Holmgren must be told. They traded for Brett Favre and then picked up Reggie White, And thus was built a winning team, The Pack is back tonight.
JOLLY OLD COACH HOLMGREN (Sung to "Jolly Old St. Nicholas")

USC tallied first when All-America RB O.J. Simpson (25-128-2TDs rushing) scored on a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that capped an 84-yard scoring drive. The touchdown, and the ensuing extra point, gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead. Indiana would answer just one quarter later. The Hoosiers had a 1st-n-goal inside the Southern California 10-yard line but could not score a touchdown. However, Indiana K David Kornowa did connect on a 27-yard field goal attempt that pulled the Hoosiers to within 7-3, a lead that USC would take into the locker room at halftime.
In the third qtr., the Trojans put together their final scoring drive of the day. This time it was a 45-yard drive that was capped by an 8-yd. touchdown run by Simpson. The score, and the extra point, gave USC a 14-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The "Cardiac Kids," a nickname that IU had been given because of several exciting comebacks throughout the 1967 campaign, would threaten one more time but could not close the gap. IU moved to the USC 37-yard line midway through the fourth stanza but failed on two chances to gain a first down with just inches to go.

How seriously is Baylor taking this game? They scheduled their bye week just before Kansas makes the trip to Waco to prepare. Not for Nebraska. Not for Oklamoma nor Texas. Kansas. The Bears want a win big-time.

How many Big 12 games has Baylor won in the 21st Century? None. The Bears have dropped 29 straight to league foes since knocking off Kansas back in 1998 in Waco.
Baylor's first league foe in 2002 is, you guessed it, Kansas, and the Bears are optimistic about ending the drought with quarterback Greg Cicero and wide receiver Reggie Newhouse returning. Cicero threw for more than 1,000 yards and Newhouse had 61 catches in 2001. Ten starters return on defense, including middle linebacker John Garrett.
This is only the sixth meeting between Kansas and Baylor. The Bears hold a one-game edge in the series, 3-2, though Kansas won the last meeting, 45-10 in 1999 at Lawrence.
