Louisville RB Eric Shelton recently learned just how rough the system can be. Shelton has spent his life dreaming of playing in the NFL, but that dream was nearly battered by some bad info from the background folks. It seems that Infomart USA, a background check company based in Marietta, Ga., had sent reports to no fewer than 18 teams saying that Shelton had a history of arrests, including aggravated assault and possession of marijuana.

Putting the Dick in Dickerson
In a story in today's Dallas Morning News , former SMU running back Eric Dickerson says SMU's terrible football program "is a joke." As a graduate of that school, I have to say, Mr. Dickerson, the fact that you are a barely literate moron is far more of an embarrassment to that school than its football program. When you were a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football , your inept attempts to "report" were mocked in Sports Illustrated and in a sketch on Saturday Night Live . Trust me, when Charlie Sheen makes fun of you ("Eric, you wore a helmet when you played, didn't you?"), you've done more damage to the reputation of a college than any football team ever could.

HERE'S A SIMPLE THREE-step plan for instant improvement in the NFL: (1) Lose nearly all your games to earn a high draft pick, (2) select a star college running back, and (3) insert him into the starting lineup and let him run like crazy over opposing defenses. Obviously, it's not that simple. That plan can fall apart quicker than you can say Curtis Enis. However, a great back in the right situation can certainly change a team's fortunes in a hurry. Unfortunately for teams subscribing to the three-step plan we've mentioned, a great college back doesn't always become a great NFL back. How can a team tell who'll achieve stardom? While it's impossible to know for sure before the player is drafted, the team can get a clear idea of how good he'll be almost as soon as he begins his NFL career.

David Flores: Peterson's in elite company Web Posted: 10/12/2004 12:00 AM CDT San Antonio Express-News They are different, yet the same in several ways. After rushing for 771 yards in his first five games as a Sooner, including 225 in a 12-0 victory over Texas on Saturday, Peterson is being compared with some of the greatest running backs in college football history. Dickerson, who went from Sealy to SMU in 1979 and finished his career as the Mustangs' leading rusher, is among the elite group.

Monday Night Football struggling lately
By Justin Wolter Published: Thursday, January 31, 2002
Monday Night Football (MNF) started in 1970. The broadcasting crew of Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford led the way. The ratings never really were a concern. Teams played football, people watched, and did it all over again the next weekend. But for the last few years MNF has decided to entertain viewers not only with football, but commentators.
Dickerson: Coach, you must feel good only down, 13-7.
Dickerson: What do you plan to do in the second half?
Coach Sherman: Play better.
Perhaps the problem is Dickerson is spending too much time staring at the other sideline reporter Melissa Starks.

In NFL draft circles, 1983 may always be known as the Year of the Quarterback, as would any class that included John Elway, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly, as well as three other first-round passers. But there was a lot more to the Class of '83 than quarterbacks. The first round also included Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson and recently retired future Hall of Famers Bruce Matthews and Darrell Green. Round 2 yielded wide receiver Henry Ellard, defensive end Leonard Marshall and running back Roger Craig. Round 3 produced safety Dave Duerson and defensive end Charles Mann. Last but not least, there were the late-round gems such as defensive end Richard Dent and wide receiver Mark Clayton (both Round 8), center Jesse Sapolu (11) and linebacker Karl Mecklenburg (12). No wonder the 1983 draft is considered one of the deepest and most talented in NFL history non-quarterbacks included.
