Davis has Hall credentials
By Dan Patrick

While Terrell Davis is mulling his NFL future, we can ponder what he has meant to the game. He is trying to put his career in perspective and so are we. Terrell Davis rushed for 701 yards in eight games in 2001. Hence the question: Is Davis a Hall of Famer? To answer the question, maybe he should be judged in the same way as Gale Sayers, another player whose career was cut short by injury. Sayers only played five great seasons. He rushed for only 4,956 career yards, numbers that at the time were dwarfed by Jim Brown. He never earned a championship ring, or even played in a league championship game. But I believe the Hall of Fame voters factored in what Sayers could have been, what the injuries prevented him from doing. People romanticize about Sayers more now because of the movie "Brian's Song," but he was the greatest runner I've ever seen on a football field, even better than Barry Sanders. He was a one-man offense for the Bears, running and catching the ball, taking back punts and kicks, and even throwing the ball at times. Sayers was a complete football player and became the youngest player ever elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. What is different about Davis, who played four great seasons? He had a better career than Sayers did, but he is not held in the same regard. Is that fair to Davis?

PLAYIN' THE BLAME GAME

Terrell Davis will make a token appearance, then retire, during Denver's pre-season game tonight with the 49'ers. It's best to remember that before he came into the league, football experts thought that John Elway was an overrated stiff who always choked in the "big game". Sad to say, opinions similar to this writer's will probably prevail concerning his Hall of Fame chances. Counter-balanced against the two Super Bowls the Broncos won while Davis was their M.V.P., his 2000-yard season, and his dominating performances in the four seasons he was healthy, is the argument that Davis' career was too short (which is a fair argument), and the claim that Davis compares unfavorably to players who are in the H.O.F. but had even shorter careers, such as Gale Sayers and Ernie Nevers. It is a prime example of a sportswriter not being able to justify his opinions according to any objective criteria, so he makes subjective arguments that he will abandon when it comes time to argue in favor of some other player.
Sayers was indeed spectacular, but arguing, as that writer does, that he should therefore be in the H.O.F. ahead of Davis would be like a baseball writer arguing that Frank Howard should be in the Hall over Kirby Puckett, because his home runs traveled further (or more to the point, that Lynn Swann should be in the Hall over Steve Largent, b/c Largent had no highlight reel grabs). It wasn't Gale Sayers' fault that the teams he played for were lousy, but one can only speculate how he would have done in a game that really mattered; of course, there is no need to do so for Terrell Davis. Sayers is in the HOF for three reasons: 1) he was exciting to watch; 2) he was a famous player in Chicago; and 3)

FOR TERRELL DAVIS, $100,000 AND TWO DISNEY TRIPS

Edited by Douglas Harbrecht
It didn't take long after the Denver Broncos captured the Super Bowl for Walt Disney Co.'s media machine to go into full gear. On Jan. 26 a mere 25 hours after he rushed into the end zone for his winning touchdown Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Terrell Davis was booked as the guest of honor in a confetti-filled parade down Disneyland's Main Street USA. Davis is the latest in a long list of Super Bowl MVPs to announce they're "going to Disneyland" immediately after winning the annual pro football extravaganza. The plug puts an estimated $100,000 into Davis' pocket, courtesy of Disney. The promotion, first developed in 1987, has become a late-January signature event for Disneyland. A native of San Diego, Davis will ride in a vintage car down the main Disneyland artery, accompanied by Mickey, Minnie, and the Disneyland Band. Davis will also be flown later in the week for a similar parade down Main Street of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Disney will air separate TV spots, one for the West Coast and one for the East Coast, in which an off-screen announcer asks Davis, "Now, that you've just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?" Davis did two takes of the spot while leaving the field one in which he mentions Disneyland, the other Walt Disney World. By Ron Grover in Los Angeles News Flash Archives

Three-hundred-pound defensive linemen trying to turn him into roadkill aren't the only hazards Terrell Davis faces in the National Football League. The star running back of the Denver Broncos, who has led the NFL in rushing for most of this season, is one of an estimated 23 million Americans afflicted with migrainesin his case, searing bouts of pain that can leave him dizzy, nauseous and temporarily half blind. Twice this season migraines knocked him out of games for a quarter; after taking medication, Davis was able to rejoin the action. "Playing football with a migraine is a combination that makes me sick just thinking about it," says Davis, 24, "but I do it anyway."
Migraines, which can be caused by certain foods, stress and other triggers, may sometimes be alleviated by simple painkillers, but often sufferers like Davis have no choice but to tough them out. The San Diego native, whose father, John, died of lupus during Davis's freshman year of high school

A former Super Bowl MVP, Davis rounds out the NFL Network's announcing team that includes veterans Kenny Albert and Dan Fouts . The crew will call three games during the 2004 preseason. Davis began his television career as a guest analyst on NFL Network's signature show NFL Total Access . where he teamed with host Rich Eisen, and analysts Ken Norton Jr. and Seth Joyner to cover events such as Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Pro Bowl and the draft. Davis has since been added as a regular contributor to NFL Total Access . He begins on-air duties with the Hall of Fame Weekend in August where his former quarterback John Elway will be inducted. During the regular season, Davis will work alongside Eisen on the Saturday and Monday night telecasts. Davis won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos during his seven-year playing career. He was named MVP of Super Bowl XXXII after rushing for 157 yards as the Broncos defeated the Packers 31-24. Davis was named NFL MVP in 1998 and led the team to its second straight championship in Super Bowl XXXIII, defeating the Falcons 34-19.
