Extremely sure-handed, he fumbled only 21 times in 11 seasons. His 408 points came on 68 touchdowns. Csonka, who was born in Stow, Ohio, on December 25, 1946, startled the pro football world by playing out his option with Miami in 1974 and then joining the Memphis' Southmen of the World Football League. When the WFL folded, he joined the New York Giants as a free agent in 1976. He enjoyed moderate success for three seasons with the Giants before returning to the Dolphins for a final 1979 season. Csonka's final fling proved to be a success. His 873 yards rushing was his best since 1973 and his 13 total touchdowns and 12 touchdowns rushing both were career highs.

Features NFL Street Legend: Larry Csonka New screens and videos of the Dolphins Hall of Famer. by Jon Robinson December 16, 2003 - Before the Nigerian Nightmare, before The Bus, there was a bruising battering ram at running back who not only led his team to the Super Bowl, he led them to perfection. It's hard to think of the Miami Dolphins without thinking about their perfect 17-0-0 season in 1972, and the man that personified the Dolphins of that era was their hard-charging running back, the man who lowered his head, hit the hole, and when the bodies hit the floor, was the one man still standing, and that man was Larry Csonka. Larry Csonka ran through so many defenders, he introduced the verb Zonk into everyday vocabulary, and by piling up linebackers like a bulldozer on his way to paydirt, Csonka earned the admiration, respect, and awe of fans and peers alike.
