Columnists Finder: Thrower's deeds worth memorial Thursday, August 29, 2002 A name on a street. A name on a bridge. A name on a park. That's all they ask. Anything to render everlasting a memory that lapsed for too long. Six months have passed since Willie Thrower died in his hometown of New Kensington. That's a mere exhale in time compared to a half-century of neglect. See, this fellow from New Ken High School was the first black quarterback to play in the NFL, Chicago Bears, Oct. 18, 1953. It took a generation before the league gave another black quarterback a fair chance to play, the Steelers' Joe Gilliam in 1974. It took decades before the rightful attention was focused on the man known as Willie The Pro, and still some residents of his own hometown weren't convinced of his distinction by the time he died in February at 71. So now there's a movement to remember Thrower and recognize him in perpetuity. Community leaders formed a committee to study the possibilities. The amazing thing isn't so much that his name likely will be emblazoned on street signs along the Industrial Boulevard that follows the Allegheny River, or on a plaque astride the new Locust Street bridge in the center of town, or on the markers identifying Memorial Park off Stevenson Boulevard.

http://www.jockbio.com/Classic/Jackson/Jackson.html
Long before he was thrust into the spotlight because of Rush Limbaugh’s comments about Donovan McNabb, ESPN broadcaster Tom Jackson was an All-Pro outside linebacker for the Denver Broncos. Though undersized for his position, Jackson carved out a legendary 14-year career that ended with his induction into Denver's Ring of Fame. How did a guy nicknamed "Tiny Tom" enjoy so much success in the NFL? With a rare combination of speed, heart and smarts. The Broncos also liked what they saw in Tom. When Denver rose to prominence in the late 1970s—on the strength of its famous "Orange Crush" defense—#57 was one of the main reasons why. Two trips to the Super Bowl and three Pro Bowls later, he retired as one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Today, Tom is still a fixture on Sundays, only now he's content to watch the action from a comfortable seat in a television studio. As a commentator for ESPN, he adds an insightful, reasonable voice to the network's high-charged coverage of the NFL. As a kid, Tom was a talented all-around athlete and diehard fan of the Cleveland Browns. Some of his best times were spent on Sundays at Municipal Stadium with his father, rooting on his "Brownies." With Paul Brown calling the shots, the Cleveland teams of that era were dominant. When Jim Brown joined the squad in 1957, the Browns became among the most feared clubs in football. Tom never missed a game. He also loved baseball and wrestling. Forget spring, summer, winter and fall, his childhood was split by three seasons.

Weekly sports update for the week of September 7th to 14th
by Geoff Hassard - Sports Information Director
Football (1-0)
The football team opened their season on Saturday the 7th with a convincing 20-0 win over Westfield State in the rain. WPI took control from the beginning, scoring on their first two possesions of the game. The first score was a pass connection from junior quarterback Nate Cote (N. Attleboro, MA) to junior wide receiver Josh Hines (Mansfield, MA) that covered 36 yards. Greg Amiro (Chelmsford, MA) added the extra point for the 7-0 lead. After a Westfield punt, WPI took over at their own 30-yard line and proceeded to drive 70 yards for another score, capped by a 1-yard plunge by junior tailback Mike Godfrey (Holliston, MA). Amiro made the PAT and the score was 14-0 as the first quarter ended. The score remained 14-0 late in the third quarter when Westfield was driving towards a score. Then the defense came up big when senior captain Brian Learned (Clinton, MA) intercepted a pass at the 10 yard line and returned it 33 yards out to the WPI 43. On the ensuing drive that began the fourth quarter, Cote finished off the 57-yard drive with a 10-yard run for the final score that put the game out of reach for the Owls. Godfrey and Learned received honors for their performances against Westfield. Godfrey, who rushed for a career high 162 yards, was selected as the offensive player of the week in the Freedom Football Conference and co-offensive player of the week in New England by the ECAC. Learned, who had 14 tackles and an interception was named to both the FFC and ECAC honor rolls.
