Butkus was one mean Bear
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
"To play this game and I've always said this you have to have a Neanderthal gene. Butkus had two," says former Chicago Bears teammate Doug Buffone on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. It is possible that Dick Butkus was the meanest, nastiest, fiercest linebacker to ever put on a helmet. More than a quarter of century after his retirement there remains the Butkus image, one of the middle linebacker wrapping up a running back and viciously slamming him to the ground like an unwanted toy. There is the famous photograph of No. 51 with his lips curled in contempt taken during a game in 1968. Eight-time Bears Pro Bowl performer Dick Butkus (#51) terrorized NFL offenses. After being a two-time All-American at Illinois, where he played center as well as linebacker, Butkus terrorized NFL offenses as the hub of the Chicago Bears' defense. The man who lived for contact was all-NFL seven times and played in the Pro Bowl eight times in a career cut short to nine years by knee injuries. In 1970, a panel of NFL coaches voted Butkus the player they would start with if they were building a new team from scratch. He had the speed and quickness to make tackles from sideline to sideline and to cover tight ends and running backs on pass plays. He had instinct, strength, leadership and, maybe most important, anger.

to help special olympics Prior to the UK Assistant Head Coach Steve Ortmayer and Louisville Head Coach Bobby Petrino taking the podium to talk about their teams and the upcoming game, three important presentations took place. John Hackett and Larry Columbia of the Kroger Company presented $10,000 scholarship checks to both schools, bringing the amount Kroger has contributed to the schools' scholarship funds to more than $220,000 since the two teams resumed playing each other. Added last year, the player honorees from both schools have become the a much anticipated part of the event. This year's honorees were former Chicago Bear and University of Louisville great Doug Buffone, and Pro Football Hall of Famer and Kentucky legend George Blanda. Both players were introduced both by noted Kentucky sportswriter Billy Reed, but also by a fellow former player. Hockaden helped introduce Buffone and Ramsey preceded Blanda to the podium. Buffone talked about how much he learned playing for the great George Hallas with the Bears. He also got a little needling in, saying under Hallas he learned not to believe in luck, adding "except when Kentucky beats Louisville." Blanda, a Chicago teammate of Buffone early in his amazing 26-year pro football career, recalled his recruiting trip to the University of Kentucky, which included a trip to the Kentucky Derby.

1975 Topps Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps popular set of football cards for 1975 once again weighed in at 528 cards. It is one of the most attractive sets of the decade and it featured all-pro, playoff action, stat leaders, record breaker, and highlight subsets. There are also a pair of George Blanda cards, one with him in a white jersey and with his statistics on the back and the other with a black jersey and a biography on the back. With Blanda in his mid forties, there was no longer enough room on the back of one card for both! The backs of the cards - which are supposed to look like a football field and a scoreboard from overhead but look more like a pinball machine to me - have more room for biographical information this year with Topps relegating their usual game (see last year's backs ) to an insert card in wax packs. The wax packs featured a scratch off game card (see below). The back of this card had a football field marked off. Each player was to have their own card and to rub off spots one-by-one until they scored or turned the ball over. Three special spots on the bottom of the card allowed for field goal tries. The game was over when either player's card was completely scratched off.

The Topps set was released in two series, with the second (cards 133-263) being more scarce. The first series wax packs featured one of 24 8x10 fold-out paper posters. The second series wax packs had Super Glossy cards, which are not to be confused with the Topps Supers , which were sold separately. The set has rookie cards of unconvicted killer O.J. RUMOR MILL ARCHIVES By Profootballtalk Editor Mike Florio POSTED 5:20 p.m. EST, February 28, 2003 ( FRIDAY WIEGERT TO TEXANS?
A league source says that free-agent offensive lineman Zach Wiegert is in Houston today, and there's a good chance that the Texans will reach a deal quickly with the former Jaguar. According to the source, Wiegert would play right tackle for the Texans, if Ryan Young opts to depart via free agency. If Young stays, Wiegert would slide to guard. Wiegert's agent, former Jacksonville exec Michael Huyghue, recently said that Zach would be changing teams in free agency. POSTED 4:10 p.m. EST, UPDATED 4:18 p.m. EST, February 28, 2003 ( FRIDAY COLTS "BRAIN DEAD" IN SATURDAY DEAL? The Colts decision to stuff $5 million into the pockets of center Jeff Saturday is being criticized in some NFL circles. According to a veteran player (who, like many, visit this here site), Saturday is "just a guy." The source opined to us that the Colts must be "brain dead" to pay Saturday that kind of money, and that the move proves the team will "never be worth a shit." On Thursday, Saturday signed a

"Bear Football"
is about running the football. Forget about the score, give me 100 + yards on the ground and a close loss any Sunday.
"Bear Football" is not 300 yard passing games, regardless if the team wins or not. Passing for that many yards obviously means everyone has totally lost focus about what is really important in "Bear Football, " i.e. running the ball.
"Bear Football" is about having a quarterback who stands 6'4" and 220 lbs. Bobby Douglass is the standard bearer for what a "Bear Quarterback" "Thor" with lightning bolt left arm. Besides, he was also an oustanding "runner."
