Forty-two times before, the selectors and voters of the inductees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame had gathered and either ignored him or deemed him unworthy. But just like he was in his time of Earth from 1894 to 1986 Fritz Pollard is impossible to keep down. On Saturday at noon, the Hall of Fame's Class of 2005 was announced and this time the voters understood. They understood that he and Jim Thorpe were the two major attractions in the founding years of the NFL. They understood that pioneers don't need stats to justify their impact. They understood that while 16 of Pollard's NFL contemporaries have been in the Hall for four decades, denying him that status was inexplicable. That's why in Canton at enshrinement time Dan Marino, Steve Young, Benny Friedman and Frederick Douglass Pollard will enter the Hall together. In the mid-1910s, Pollard may have been the biggest name in all of football. The NFL was still a few years down the road and college football was the biggest drawing card in sports. Pollard led Brown University to the 1915 Rose Bowl as an All-American running back. East Coast newspapers including the New York Times sang his praises week-to-week as his Bruins upset the likes of powerful Harvard and Yale. Had there been a Heisman Trophy in his day, Pollard would have been the frontrunner.

It's hardly exciting, but Patriots eat up win over Cleveland
By Michael Smith, Globe Staff, 10/27/2003 FOXBOROUGH Halfway through the regular season, the time had come for the bruised and battered Patriots to finally catch a break. ADVERTISEMENT They got it in the form of a Cleveland team whose preferred quarterback, Kelly Holcomb, has a broken right fibula a bleeding broken right fibula, actually so painful he could not start yesterday's game at Gillette Stadium, though he was pressed into action when starter Tim Couch sprained his right thumb near the end of the first half. A team without its stud running back, former Boston College star William Green, who sat with an injured right shoulder. A team without three of its opening-day starters on the offensive line. "Join the club, buddy," Tedy Bruschi said. "It's not a matter of who's down but who's in there and are they getting the job done." That, in a nutshell, is the story of New England's season, one that at the midpoint has them 6-2 for the fifth time in franchise history and leading the AFC East heading into Denver a week from tonight. Getting the job done in yesterday's 9-3 win was Kevin Faulk, who contributed 154 yards from scrimmage, a career-high 96 rushing. Putting in work was second-year tight end Daniel Graham with seven catches for 110 yards, easily the best game of his career. Owed time and a half is a New England defense that allowed Cleveland to reach midfield twice and has allowed one touchdown in its last three games. Earning his check was Mike Vrabel with a career-high three sacks and a forced fumble against the team he grew up supporting. Employee of the day: Special teams coach Brad Seely, whose unit accounted for all the Patriots' points and downed four Ken Walter punts inside the 20.

Business as usual for Brown
He's back in customary role
August 2, 2005 FOXBOROUGH Sometime this offseason, the most relaxed one Troy Brown can remember, the notion crept into his mind. Between playing with his sons, Sir'mon and SaanJay, and tending to his ill 81-year-old grandmother, Brown started to realize what it meant that he, an unrestricted free agent and 12-year NFL veteran, was a player without a team. ''I may have played my last football game," Brown thought. As it turns out, retirement would have to wait. The most tenured Patriot (along with Willie McGinest) rejoined the team in late May, virtually assuring that he'll end his pro career in the only jersey he's ever worn. And he'll be doing so in his natural position, back to playing wide receiver after a year of filling in at nickel back in a patchwork secondary. Brown is back where he knows he belongs, even if it didn't always seem he would be. ''I didn't know what was going to happen," said Brown, who turned 34 last month. ''I didn't know if I was going to be here, retired, or whatever. Just go with the flow, man. I'm here now." Yes, he's here, just as he has been for the past 12 seasons, quietly and efficiently utilizing every ounce of talent he has in his 5-foot-10-inch, 196-pound frame. Brown has earned great respect from his teammates, young and old, for his work ethic and willingness to perform any task asked of him.

NFL Greatest Players Willie Brown: "Combine all of Willie's skills and the result is what myths are made of. He is a marvel to watch, a true artist at work." A sportswriter once wrote this after observing Willie Brown dominate another game from the secondary during his 16-year career. Not a bad description for an undrafted, unheralded free agent who in 1963, came out of Grambling College looking for a chance to prove he belonged. After becoming a starter six games into his rookie season with the Denver Broncos, Brown began to show why he did belong. Four years and 15 interceptions later, Brown was dealt to the Oakland Raiders. That day began a string of success for both Brown and the Raiders rarely seen in the history of the NFL. For 12 years, Willie dominated the secondary for the Raiders, picking off 46 passes while "blanketing" the other teams best receiver, even while playing hurt. In the process, Willie was becoming the unquestioned leader of a dominant Raiders' defense. That leader from humble beginnings was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

O.J. Simpson recently lost his house and cars when karma came and bit him in the ass. Hope it keeps biting. Critical Mass vs. Willie Brown: Willie should try to think before he speaks. So long as Critical Mass is peaceful, more pedal power to 'em. Maybe someone should give Willie a bike. Bet his attitude would change (again). Looking for a roommate? Check with City College football coach George Rush. He may even get ya a job, too! BART workers went on strike whining about how they only made $40,000 last year, while some students were lucky to make just $10,000. I have always been a supporter of labor and its struggles, but this recent strike is a black spot on a great movement.

FOUR FORMER G-MEN FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE LISTED IN FAMILY DIGEST July 2, 2004 GRAMBLING, La. – Four former Grambling State football players have been listed in the Family Digest magazine’s Best "Black College" Athletes of All Time which was previously released. The four athletes are as follows: defensive back Willie Brown, defensive lineman Junius "Buck" Buchanan, defensive lineman Willie Davis and quarterback Doug Williams. All four will be honored at a luncheon as a part of the Family Fun Weekend which will be hosted by Family Digest magazine on Saturday, July 3rd at 12 noon at the Rivera Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The four players being honored have all played on Super Bowl championship teams. Brown played for Grambling State from 1959 to 1962. This defensive back played for a total of 16 years in both the American and National Football Leagues while posting a total of 54 career interceptions. Brown is the only player in NFL history to intercept one pass for 16 consecutive seasons. He played with the Houston Oilers, Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders. He was a key member of Oakland’s Super Bowl XI championship team as the Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14. Brown was also a member of the Super Bowl II team who lost to the Green Bay Packers 33-14. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984. Buchanan played for G-Men from 1959 to 1962 where he was a three-time All-America and All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection. He is considered one of the greatest defensive linemen who has ever tightened a chin strap. Buchanan came to Grambling State in 1959 at 6-feet-6 inches tall while weighing only 225 pounds as a freshman and left as a 6-foot-7 seven inch, 275-pound monster who would play for 13 years with the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1963, he was the first player selected in the inaugural (and former) American Football League Draft by the Dallas Texans which later moved to Kansas City and were renamed the Chiefs.

    Condoleeza Rice Warned
Willie Brown Not To Fly On 911

    From Karolyn Martin
So, Condi-Condy-Candy was the mysterious caller who warned the top dogs not to fly or be in New York City on September 11th. We always wondered WHO called them and if it were true. This leads to only one question and surely President Bush or Condi-Condy-Candy Rice would find no precedence in the US Rule Book on Behavior to refuse this answer to the American people: (Are you ready?)
    WHO WARNED YOU, Condy-Condi-Candy? ? ? ? ?
Who gave you this information you were so eager to tell all Bush special friends and associates about? What source of info did they have? Important enough for you to take the warning they gave you and call everyone PERSONALLY? Then there is the other side of this question, plain and simple: Who determined the names you should warn and those you would not call to warn them not to come to New York? Entire corporations who had offices in the WTC did not show up at work September 11th. But what about those who did report to the office as usual?
Like Schindler's List, what we want to see is Condi's List...

    1973 Topps Football Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps massive set of football cards for 1973 grew to 528 cards - a figure it would remain at for a decade. The increase in the size of the football card set coincided with an increase in the size of the basketball card set and a decrease in the size of the baseball card set One unusual feature of this set is that none of the cards feature any wording on the fronts that would indicated the player is was an NFL All-Pro nor is there an All-Pro subset. This was the first Topps set to be released all at once instead of in series and it was the last to feature a card of Joe Namath as Topps and his agent never agreed to terms again. The predominately orange backs featured a brief biography, statistics, and a cartoon with a trivia question. Rookie cards for 1973 include Franco Harris, Ken Stabler, Bob Kuechenberg, Ken Anderson, Jack Youngblood, Jack Ham, Dan Dierdorf, Art Shell, Jim Langer, and Dwight White. 1973 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Playoffs Boyhood Photos Leaders
